so this is the last book in the serires where laine is seen/mentioned? 'when' does the SS 'new york new york' take place? does it happen before this book? i guess it's pretty hard to actually keep any sort of 'time' in this series, what with the lack of ageing...

lol I remember Lenni Fraiser, I thought she was sophisticated like Stacey too and was sporting hats and bell bottoms like her
And New York, New York came way before Stacey's Ex Best Friend.

Looking back, I can't help but wonder, did Stacey overreact to Laine dancing with someone else or is it no big deal cause it's not like Laine and Pete Black were steady boyfriend and girlfriend? I think it's mostly in tv shows, movies and books where it's such a big deal if you talk to another girl other than your date, but I also really felt for Stacey because her time with Laine wasn't going well at all.

Well, Pete had just asked Laine to dance and she turned him down, then that other guy walked up to Laine, asked her to dance, and she accepted. Laine had been treating Pete like crap the whole night.
On the other hand, Pete was waaay too into Laine, seeing as how she was only going to be there for a week and already had a boyfriend. Pete was written as such a dork in this book.

Pete was a little creepy if you ask me. I don't fault Laine for not wanting to hang out with him. She was ruder than necessary, but sometimes if you're nice to the weird person they don't get it when you say you aren't interested. At least that was my experience with stupid jr. high boys.

Yeah, Pete was creepy. Laine was such a snob! Stacey deserved better. I'm glad Stacey finally stood up to her in the end and decided to end the friendship.

I don't think Pete was creepy. He was just a teenage boy who had a crush on girl who was out of his league and didn't know how to conduct himself around her. Happens all the time.

Wow I re-read this and though I think I knew, I never really realized this, but from the first chapter, we KNOW Laine didn't want to go to Stoneybrook at all and that's why she was being a passive aggressive b*tch the whole time! Stacey wanted her there sooo badly and didn't even give Laine a chance to talk. She had so many parties to go to, why would she want to go to Stoneybrook and school and all? And Ann M. Martin was in on all this too, she made the club ridiculous acting on purpose just to make Laine act like that and entertain us all once again! And Stacey couldn't have been so naive thinking that Laine saying "childish" was about her enjoying the babysitting when she was most likely bashing Stoneybrook!!!!

I was rereading this one and I don't think Stacey should have pressured Laine into going to the dance with Pete. It goes without saying that Laine should have either stuck to her guns and not gone with him, or treated him decently while they were at the dance together, but still... Laine had a boyfriend, and not only was she not interested in Pete, she seemed to actively dislike him -- how could Stacey have possibly thought that Laine and Pete going to the dance together would go well?

I agree Stacey should not have pressured Laine into going with Pete. It was clear to all that Pete was crushing on Laine and that Laine wasn't interested.
Laine didn't really want to come to Stoneybrook at all. She shouldn't have let Stacey talk her into that, either! If Stacey wanted Laine to visit her, she should have waited until they both had time off from school and could have done some fun stuff.

Oh yeah I keep forgetting about Pete, I guess Stacey was being pushover, but the fan in me kept calling Laine a b*tch for years when really she was just frustrated and annoyed in general.
I guess they would have lasted if they met up at a different time.

Did anyone else find it odd that King was calling Stacey's house? I don't know about you, but I wouldn't feel comfortable giving my boyfriend the phone number to my out of town friend's house - especially a the age of 13. That always bugged me.
Also, didn't Stacey hide Lennie under some dirty underwear or something? Ew! I hope she was washed before she was given back to Claudia!
