Those pins really confused me. Were they simply gluing paper and a pin to cardboard? Wouldn't the paper peel off? I don't remember them seeling the paper with any special glues.
Elsewhere, someone was trying to convince me that Mrs. Stevenson is a "warm and loving" mother. I don't know what books she's been reading.

Hmm...well she lets them choose the pizza toppings. And she hugged them when she wasn't dead. There you go: warm and loving!
I don't think the pins were meant to last long. Not like anyone would want to wear them after the carnival anyway.

Yeah, I figured people were just humoring the BSC when they bought them, since the money went to a good cause anyway. Like in high school, clubs would have bake sales and teachers would always come and give us like $5 for a cupcake and tell us to keep the change.

^ I could see buying cupcakes to humor the kids, but pins with crap stuck to them? That's a pretty pathetic effort ;D

I just read this and it was my first Abby-centered book. I'm the odd man out, cause I really liked it, actually. I am finding that I really like Abby (haven't read many books with her in them), aside from the health issues. The allergy-speak is ANNOYING. I agree with whoever felt a bit misled by this book, I thought it would be about Abby joining the BSC, but she's already a member!
I really liked the bits about her dad, I thought they were sweet. I don't think it's so weird they placed his things about the house. They were putting out things he actually USED, rather than junk he didnt' care about. I didn't even find it weird that Mrs. Stevenson put out the bathrobe. IDK maybe I'm weird.
Until I began re-reading the BSC books as an adult, I never realized how many friggin carnivals they actually participate in! Jeesh!

I agree about putting Abby's dad's stuff around the house. It never occurred to me to think it was weird. I thought it was sweet that they found that way to honor him.

I usually don’t like Abby but didn’t mind her in this one. I liked how she and Anna went through the box of her dad’s stuff and always really feel for her when she talks about her dad. I’m glad that Kristy still let her be in the club despite all of the worries she had after Abby’s asthma attack. I understand how this was probably really scary for Kristy (especially since she witnessed it) and that she was trying to be responsible with making sure the sitters are capable. Also, the points she made are valid about what if Linny wouldn’t have been there or the kids would have been younger, etc. But the other girls were right that something like the asthma attack could happen to anyone. I liked the comparison with Stacey being in danger of having a diabetic reaction and am almost surprised that Kristy never made a big deal about her not being capable because of her disease. And Kristy should know that emergencies of any kind can happen. Did she forget how she left a 6 and 4 year old unsupervised washing a car while she dealt with David Michael and Louie’s “emergency” in Boy Crazy Stacey? I got a lot more of a sense of Mrs. Stevenson’s personality in this book. In lots of books I don’t really like her because she just doesn’t seem like a warm or caring mother. Now I think that she changed a lot after her husband died and almost lost a part of herself. I liked the scene when the girls run to her after she gets off the train. Shows a lot more of their close relationship that is sometimes mentioned but I can’t usually see. Loved the Papadakis kids in this one (posted more on that in their thread, though) and even thought the Arnold twins were cute, though I usually can’t stand them. The Pikes’ merry-go-round booth sounded really cool. I always like the carnival/festival subplots (I know, I’m a minority) and enjoyed this one, too. Loved how Watson got all excited about the rides. One of the better Abby books, in my opinion.

I just reread this one over the weekend (caught myself a cold, couldn't sleep so I read all the BSC books that had backlogged!), and I have to say, those pins made of laminated magazine cutouts sounded SO lame. Was it mentioned how much they sold them for? Because I so wouldn't have humored them to the tune of more than fifty cents apiece

This was a pretty good intro for Abby I think. I've never read an Abby book except for Abby's Book and her chapters in the super specials. I like how Abby explains that the reason she jokes is partly (or mostly) due to the fact that her father used to laugh so much. At the end Mrs. Stevenson says that Abby is like her father in that way, so maybe it is a way to cope with her dad's death (nod to Aln's post from the Dirty Diapers thread.)
The carnival was fun to read about, I usually don't like them. As for the ideas for the booths, they were okay. The pins were crap I'm sure. Although they now have make-your-own-pins kits so if I imagine them looking like they were made in one of those they look better.
I can't see how Elvira was such a cute attraction just because she's cute. She's just a goat. Maybe an elephant or something, but not a goat. If Watson can afford to rent rides, why not rent something worth getting your picture taken with?
I think Kristy was right to be concerned regarding Abby's asthma attack. It was Abby's fault the attack happened. She knew she was overdoing it, she knew about the allergens in the air and she didn't carry her inhaler with her. Hannie almost got run over!

I also like this book, especially the carnival (I usually do like those and this one was no exception ;D) I don't remember much about this one, though. What exactly do they do with Elvira? She's always funny to read about. Goats can cause so many.... situations. My family went through 3 when I was about 3 years old (my dad was convinced that every kid should grow up with a goat - don't ask??? ;D) and had to give them all back because they caused so much trouble. But they were kind of fun. That was scary about Hannie. I thought both her and Linny were great but felt for them. Agree that Abby should have had her inhaler for sure. As someone who deals with allergies, though, I am very hesitant to feel like anyone causes something like a reaction. They can happen even without warning. True, you shouldn't put yourself in danger, which is what you might be saying about Abby. I haven't read this one for a while so am not sure. I think this is one of my favorite Abby books. I will have to read it again soon as it has been a while. I always forget that I like it, too. ;D
