My grandpa (mom's dad) told my dad after he got married that he should pretend that he couldn't figure out how to use the washing machine because then he wouldn't ever have to do laundry. He said he had done that for the whole time he was married and it got him out of doing wash. My mom caught on quickly with my dad, though, and now makes him wash his own car washing towels ;D I haven't read this book for a really long time but might have to reread now. I agree with what everyone is saying about the Pike kids being capable but also think that there wouldn't have been a plot if they would have just taken care of themselves like they could. No plot = no book so I guess I'm glad that the Pikes didn't do stuff for themselves because I remember liking this book pretty well.

Heh. The :headdesk: was really more about the metal soup can in the microwave thing. The washing machine stuff was mostly pretty harmless; it was just kind of funny.

Just reread and can really relate to Mal. Though I agree that the kids could do a lot more for themselves, I think the issue she was facing wasn't that she had a lot more to do than usual but just that she felt swamped and overwhelmed and wanted to focus on her project. When I get involved in a project and feel like I have a lot to deal with, any little request seems monumental and I dramatize it, making it into a huge deal that someone is asking me to do something. Then I tend to blow up at whoever was unfortunate enough to get in my way ;D (Poor Mom ;D.) And I only have 2 other people in my family so I can't imagine what it is like for the Pikes. I really can relate to Mal's feelings of being overwhelmed right now. I liked how Kristy told her to take 2 weeks off to think about not being part of the club. I think that was her way of letting Mal finish her project without coming right out and saying that because I think she knew kind of why Mal was feeling the way she was.

I think I would have felt like mallory just being a member of the bsc. They worked so much on top of going to school and then they organized carnivals and stuff... Just thinking about it makes me sleepy.

My favorite part was where Mallory wondered whether it was possible that an entire family could have a screw loose. Funny, I've wondered the same thing about my family. LOL

I agree about the Pike kids not doing chores being stupid. I hate when kids/teens know nothing about anything! When I went to Schoolies (a QLD tradition when 17 year old high school graduates go down the the coast for a week and stay with friends in hotels) I stayed with 3 girlfriends. I had to do their washing, caus they had no idea how to, and cooking. I thanksed my mum after that for making me do alot of grown up house stuff. Now I live out of home, and can do everything. My friends still live at home, haha. Anyway, I agree that 11 isn't that much older than 10 and 9, those older kids were treated like 6 year olds at times! The adventure day was cool, but not neccessary imo. Mal did nothing wrong.

Just re-read this one and really enjoyed it. Mallory is really likeable in this book, usually she comes across as overdramatic and whiney so I think this book was good to explain WHY she acts like that a lot.
I loved when Claire and Margo did the Mean Old Mallory puppet show. So hilarious! Although it was kinda sad when they were gleefully telling Mallory about it, lol. It is strange though that they make up this Mean Old Mallory thing because she won't play with them - I mean their brothers don't wanna play with them but they don't get stories made up about them. Oh well.
The explorers thing was pretty cool and thats usually the type of subplot that bores me, but I thought it was sweet of Mallory to do (and awfully nice of Jessi to accompany her - they didn't get paid, right?)
I liked how Mal made that chart to organize herself, though I noticed there was absolutely no relaxing time which yikes! She was cute at the author's fair or whatever when she put on a congratulatory face for Rebecca but really she had won (shocking!)
Oh and eww at Buddy getting his foot caught in his spokes. Gosh the first descriptions of it make it sound like his foot was all mangled and falling off.

^ I had forgotten about the explorer part of this book and also really liked it. Mal and Jessi are often nice like that. They inspire me ;D I also thought it was nice how she was trying to be happy for the other girl at the fair. Reminds me of a time when I was totally shocked to win an award for horse showing because everyone was expecting this other girl to win and as I was congratulating her, I realized they had called my name. As for Mallory's schedule, I know just how she feels sometimes. I always like reading this book, Maid Mary Anne, and Kristy for President when I'm feeling overwhelmed.

It was Teeter Streeter. As in, " Teeter Streeter is really cool...you'll look like a geek and act like a fool." Haha, I remember that part! This is one of my favorite Mallory books. Since I write stories myself I could sympathize with her when she needed to work but couldn't because of the distractions around her (Since I'm an only child, I don't have the same distractions as Mal but distractions do keep me away from the computer at the most inconvenient times). I loved the mall thing at the end, the taco place they go to eat at sounded really good when I was reading the book (I think it was called Casa Grande or something). And what was Teeter Streeter anyway? I remember Mal and Jessi making fun of it but I forgot what it was.

^ That's the impression I got, too. I actually feel for them but really can relate to Mallory even though, like sweetvalleygirl, I am an only child. I also know I interpret every little "demand" that others make as much more drastic when I am feeling stressed and pressed for time. As for teeter streeter, I don't remember that and have no idea what it was about but am now intrigued ;D
