That was a good change. I was referring to the way Mary Anne became more caught up in herself (passive-aggressivenes) and lost the unique part of her character. But then, as well we all know, as the Series progressed, all the characters became much more caricature-like. I thought both MA and Logan looked much older on the cover. MA resembles Kerry Green (was that the actresses name)? from The Goonies.

I just reread and forgot how much I LOVED this book when I was young. It was such a grown up book to me. I read it every August/September as I was heading back to school--long before 8th! Reading the party scene made me really cringe this time. I'm shy like Mary Anne but I would not have wanted to wonder what everyone at the party thought of my exit or what they were saying about me right after I left. I just kept picturing her busting out of that room--to the guests, it just looks like she was angry/upset/unappreciative. So not good. One thing I noticed when Logan is at the meeting and Claudia goes downstairs to get soda for everyone, she comes back with glasses, and Mary Anne says Logan "handed me a glass of Diet Coke." Now how would she know that if it was in a glass and she hadn't tasted it?

Anzuhana, maybe MA is psychic? I think someone also was drinking a Pepsi. If so, Stacey had Coke (Austin), Diet Coke (MA)?, and Pepsi (someone). That was sure nice of her parents. Thanks, Oldhickory. I used to love the Goonies, thought it was so cool to find such a treasure. BooBoo, ITA with what you said about MA. I was very shy growing up, MUCH moreso than I am now, but don't think I'd have run out the way MA did. I also think it was a little odd that not one person went after her or called. It seemed like they all magically felt what happened was their complete fault and as both Stacey and MA said "didn't think the other would ever want to be friends again." The other thing, unrelated, I am remembering as I type this was Mary Anne said something along the lines of "I (she) don't want any new friends. I only want...(Club Members)." MA also states that when She, K, and C, were fighting and she met Dawn, she (MA) was glad for the new friend but this time she didn't want anyone else. So, she basically admitted, the only reason she talked with Dawn was because there was no one else!

^ I was shy, too, and I also don't think I would have run out on my own party. That would have attracted even more attention, and I wouldn't have wanted that! I probably would have just frozen where I was and turned very, very red.

If she was, then Dawn would probably would've used MA's powers to predict the future.

^Same here, Starrynight.
Lol, Anzuhana. Maybe Mary Anne kept her "power" a secret.

Zoar, if she did, then it's too bad. I would've liked to read everyone's reactions.

I agree with both of you. I was quieter and on the shy side growing up, too, but I wasn't so bad that I'd have run away from my own birthday party.
It is odd that no one, not even Dawn or Kristy, would have followed her. They should have tried to convince her to come back once she got over the initial surprise and embarrassment.

at the very least claudia (who at this point was MA's neighbor and lived literally 30 seconds away) could have stopped by MA's house on the way home.

I agree with both of you, too. And what about Mr. And Mrs. McGill? Did they not see or at least later hear from Stacey about what happened? I know they were banished to the kitchen and the party was downstairs in the rec room but iirc, MA ran up the stairs to escape so unless Maureen and Ed just didn't hear her abruptly leave and/or didn't ask Stacey how the party went afterwards they should have intervened. I'm not saying with MA then and there but with Stacey later. Of course this could have been a truly deleted scene that was not even given mention.

I always felt this was a dumb part of the book. Someone would have gone after her since they were such good friends. I think this book really solidified to me my dislike of Mary Anne. I thought it was hilarious the shoe thing in the gym and it was so nice to have people throw her a party and she just left??? Come on Mary Anne, grow a set and stay, eat cake and open presents!

I just reread this book over the weekend. It brought back all kinds of good memories. I agree that it's hilarious that her shoe flew off and I hate that she left her party.
