The one part that had me cracking up was when Mary Anne asked Stacey to bring a souvenir from Sign of the Dove like a half-eaten piece of bread, Jessi goes, "Mary Anne, that is so disgusting", and Kristy says, "If for whatever wild reason I end up as a celebrity, don't let Mary Anne near me!"

Honestly you'd think Stacey was the only person in the world that has divorced parents and diabetes . And she really doesn't know what being a divorce means . She actually thought her mom would be staying with her dad . Why would her mom subject herself to staying with creepy Ed McGill.

I enjoy the books that revolve around her diabetes. There were only two books, I think, that revolved around her diabetes, the Truth About Stacey and this one. I love any BSC book which discusses Stacey's diabetes - there are only two books that mainly focuses on diabetes. I'm very glad that not too many books focused on Stacey's diabetes. Stacey is a multi-faceted character, not just a diabetes victim and it would have stunk and would have ruined the series if they made too many of Stacey's books be about her diabetes or even worse, had her frail and sickly and in and out of the hospital all the time. Some BSC fanfictions do that...have Stacey's diabetes seem like a terminal illness. One fanfic I read had Stacey in the hospital for months and had her wailing to her friends that her diabetes had "gotten worse" than ever and had her fretting about her "sickly" life. Another fanfiction had Stacey in the hospital for weeks, then had her wheeled into a school event in a wheelchair by a nurse and her mum as if diabetes left people THAT weak for ages. In reality, I know lots of people with diabetes, including some of my own family and they generally lead normal, healthy lives. Diabetes is NOT AIDS or terminal cancer. I felt sorry for Stacey when she stopped sticking to her diet. I always wondered how Stacey--especially at such a young age--could stick to her very strict diet and have no problem about it - not to mention spending three times a week hanging out with friends gorging on junk food in front of her. It must be so frustrating. I, as a junk food addict - I am such a Claudia! cannot imagine having diabetes. Anyway, excuse my rambling. I think it's pretty normal for a 13 year old girl to go against her diet and sneak candy when she's not supposed to. People with diabetes CAN have an occasional sweet...that's partially what insulin and medications like metaformin are for...to control blood glucose. That is one myth that some of the early BSC books inadvertently perpetuated...that people with diabetes can never have any sweets. Thankfully, the later re-prints and later books corrected this. Yes, in reality, Stacey and others with diabetes CAN occasionally have a candy bar without keeling over and being rushed to the hospital in a diabetic coma. At Christmas in my family, my brother and two of my cousins, all with diabetes, were able to have a slice of pumpkin pie and a few small chocolate treats without collapsing. And in addition, there is Splenda and some delicious sugar-free treats, including chocolate. So, no, people with diabetes, even so-called "brittle" diabetes do not have to shun all sweets forever.

Not all diabetes are created equally. My mother's doctor said teenage girls are some of the hardest patients to get control of. They don't eat right because they're teenagers, and they don't take their insulin properly because it can cause weight gain. It's not the blood sugar highs that are dangerous (unless you're consistently over like 300 or something), it's the lows that can kill you.

Lots of this is true...and yes, low blood sugar can be dangerous also. But my point was that people with diabetes do not have to forever shun all sweets, which is an all-too-common misconception that too many people have...this misconception is apparent in some of the Stacey fanfics I've seen. Another myth that some people have and is depicted in fanfics is of people with diabetes being unable to have a healthy pregnancy or have children...another myth that needs to be done away with.

I just figured the "Stacey will die if she eats an M&M" mentality is from how diabetes was treated in the 80s. In Boy-Crazy Stacey, she can't eat processed cheese and has to read the ingredients on a bread wrapper before ruling it safe to eat. Treatment has changed since then - doesn't Stacey have an insulin pump in the new BSC series?

I agree though, this is how diabetes was portrayed at the time because there was so little advancements and no one knew how to really treat it. The myths are like that because of that lack of knowledge at the time.
Also I just wnat to address the topic for the pregnancy and diabetes but there are women who do have complications with diabetes while pregnant. It's not a myth if it does happen to people even if it's a small amount.

I think they're prone to having larger than average babies. Here are some pregnancy issues if anyone cares. With the pump, you still have to track what you eat because you have to somehow program how much insulin is given with each meal. It's still a dangerous disease even if you can eat an ice cream cone or whatever.

It's true that women with diabetes do have larger than average weight babies.
And yes, some women have complications, but most don't.
I actually have in my fic timeline where Stacey has two kids by birth, but they are born a large weight.
While uncontrolled diabetes can be dangerous, still...diabetes is not cancer.
Think of Mary Tyler Moore, Sonia Sotomayor and countless other high-profile figures who have lived normal, healthy lives.
I read that Sonia has a very similar sort of diabetes to Stacey's where she needs regular insulin and has to curtail her carb intake.
Yet, Sonia is strong, healthy, is not in and out of the hospital, does not have to avoid all sugar or pasta and diabetes does not rule her life.

Mary Tyler Moore went blind from diabetes...
I'm done debating this. You're very insistent that you know the ins and outs of something that you don't actually deal with. Good on you.

Good on you. 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅 Chill, Sparklymouse. And actually I do deal with diabetes...I'm borderline diabetic myself and know many people, including members of my own family with both types of diabetes. Diabetes is not as rare as you think. Yes, I know Mary eventually became blind in her old age...I meant when she was younger and was acting. Oprah Winfrey admired her greatly and had her on her talk show several times. And yes, lots of people with diabetes have poor vision and some do go blind in their older years...one of my siblings has diabetes and poor vision, but he gets on all right. In my own fanfiction, I actually have Stacey need thick glasses by her mid-twenties because yes, she's a very possible candidate for poor vision. I'm very familiar with diabetes because I know so many people with it...several of my family members have it and several of my colleagues have it. I'm Latina and diabetes, both type one and type two, are quite prevelent among Latinos and Latinas. Diabetes is far more common than some people realize.

Stacey looks like Little Orphan Annie trapped in a 50s soap opera. This is too tiny to judge, but it could be cute or weird or both.

This one is really good, but was kind of tough for me to read because I had a terrible reaction to a medication. Luckily I didn't end up in the hospital, but if I continued to take it, I would have. It made me sympathetize even more with Stacey, though.
Her parents are horrible for putting her in the middle like that. Wtf is up with Ed grilling her about where Maureen is? She can't visit a friend without him getting suspicious? No wonder Stacey caved to the pressure and gave in to sugar cravings.
I've noticed some people say she should tell her parents about her symptoms. Tbh, I don't blame her for not telling them with the way they're acting and how they dragged her from doctor to doctor in #3. Plus, I know from experience that when you feel very crappy, it becomes harder and harder to take care of your health and you might not make the best decisions. I really felt for Stacey here.
I was surprised at how much humor is in this book, like Kristy and the chair, then Stacey and Ed talking about trying to make the next vacation even worse by visiting the sewage treatment plant. Then I realized Ann actually wrote this one, and I find I prefer her humor (Lerangis has his moments, but he can be OTT at times and it doesn't suit the BSC). Laine is great here as well. I kind of love her eclectic taste in gifts. I kind of want that spider and I think the cicada keychain sounds cool. I guess I have weird taste too.
Charlotte was annoying in this one. I have hypochondriac tendencies as well (Stacey books don't always help this... I'm ALWAYS freaking out that I have diabetes), but this was OTT. Although the "pinched nerve" thing cracked me up for some reason. Just such a strange thing for a kid to say. I do think her parents should've done something about this, especially since she missed school. This plotline either needed to be dialed down a notch or two or developed more. I normally like Charlotte, but not in this.
One of the better Stacey books, but not one I read often back in the day. I'm terrified of hospitals so reading about them makes me paranoid.
