Okay, I just read Stacey vs. the BSC for the first time this weekend and I have to say, I was really disappointed! She was SUCH a b*tch!! I wanted to be on her side... because they SHOULD have lives outside of the BSC. But she was horrid to her friends. Like when she is horrified by Mary Anne's Mickey or Minnie Mouse shirt or whatever. Rude. Poor Mary Anne, she never did a thing to Stacey! I loved how she had an I <3 my Cat sticker on her back pack, though. LOL.
Yeah Dawn was kinda psycho stalking Stacey like that, but whatever, Stacey was a b*tch and a half. And only inviting Claudia to her party? I don't understand why the rest of the BSC wasn't more angry with Claud for going. I know it said she went and apologized to MA and Dawn, but still... well, at least she felt guilty about it.
Opinions? Who are you more inclined to "side with" in this book, Stacey or the BSC? I am def more with the BSC. And for claiming her friends are too immature, it was pretty immature of her to miss the talent show, that was so sad when Charlotte was looking for her and couldn't find her.

Well, in my mind, the BSC and Stacey are tied. I don't blame her for being well and truly over Kristy and all her bossiness, rules, punctuality-obsession. Personally, I'm surprised ultra-cool sophisticated Stacey put up with it so long and worried about getting the Look from Kristy right along with everyone else. Although as you said, that wasn't really why Stacey was such an intolerable b*tch. She was more worried that her friends weren't "cool" enough.
I did like Stace giving Kristy the smackdown at the end of Chapter 14 though. Ha, classic. About time someone said it!

yeah, i agree, i think that the BSC and Stacey were equally bitchy. i liked the kristy smackdown too because at the meeting it seemed like the whole BSC were dissing her and when she tried to tell them off, they got angry.
i can understand why the bsc would get offended by stacey not inviting them to her and roberts party, but as if they would even fit in there or be comfortable. and also, it was a party for her and roberts friends, but whatever.
and dawn is a SIT (stalker in training) what a freak. so what if stacey lied, doesnt give u the right to go out and follow her all around town (i mean pizza express, hahha)
but i also thought that stacey got to embarassed by her friends, esp. at burger town. like get a grip, ur only 13, u have plenty of time to be mature and grown up in, like say, the rest of ur life.
i guess all of this doesnt matter, as stacey comes crawling back to the BSC like 5 books later or something, hahaha.

I haven't read this one for a while but remember thinking Stacey was a real jerk. Making fun of Mary Anne's Minnie Mouse shirt alone made me angry. I happen to like Disney and don't find anything "babyish" about wearing Mickey and Minnie. After all, what defines "cool"? Personally, I think that some of the outfits that Claudia and Stacey wear sound absolutely hideous. Give me Kristy's sweatshirt and jeans (which I think the books make too big of deal out of. Lots of people dress like that and look perfectly fine. While I also don't like Kristy's "looks", I get sick of Stacey always thinking she is so sophisticated and cool just because she grew up in NYC. Buffykay70 - I loved "SIT"! I will have to remember that one as me and my friends always refer to guys who like us and follow us around as "stalkers" I will have to reread this book and see if I still have the same take on it as I did when I read it the first time - siding not necessarily with the BSC but certainly against Stacey.

One of my BSC pet peeves is how Kristy and Mary Anne are described as "immature" because they're not interested in fashion. Uh, whatever. Plenty of middle aged women aren't interested in those things, I guess they'd better consult Claudia and Stacey or remain eternally immature.

I have been meaning to post a topic on this. It drives me crazy how they are constantly calling Kristy and Mary Anne immature on the basis of their looks. Actually, I think they (Mary Anne especially) are sometimes the most mature of all the girls. It was real "mature" when Claudia stuck her tongue out at Mal in New York, New York... In my opinion, clothes, makeup and being boy crazy does not make you cool or mature. Glad to hear someone else agree.

Totally. If that's what it means, then I'd rather be immature all my life than dress like a watermelon.

I totally agree also. But I think that Claudia and Stacey were calling MA and Kristy immature because they thought that they had been playing with dolls when they were too old. I think the quote goes something like Kristy and MA only stopped playing with dolls last summer. I think Claudia said that.

I think both were the reasons given depending on the book. I may be weird, but I don't find anything wrong with playing with dolls (depending on how you "play") and don't consider that criteria for immaturity, either.

When you're 13 years old, boys and fashion are "mature". If I was Stacey or Claudia, I would consider Mary Anne and Kristy to be immature as well.
You have to keep in mind the ages of the girls saying this stuff, ya know? At 13 you are very self-conscious and aware of the people you hang around with. To them, Kristy and MA were very childish because they considered themselves to be so grown up.

Ooh, I liked it in Claudia and Lighthouse Mystery where Laura Hatt put Claudia in her place by saying how it would have been so cool if she could hang out with the cool kids at SMS but instead had to tag along with Claudia.

^ I also liked in in Stacey and the Cheerleaders where Stacey actually acknowledges that Claudia's outfit is bizarre. Quite a change from everyone gushing over them, despite their absolute hideousness.
I guess the books are written from a 13 yr old perspective, but they're also written in a PC frame of mind and should reflect that there is an entire spectrum of personalities and interests, that one doesn't have to be a superficial bimbo who giggles over voice-cracking boys in order to be considered "mature". When I began reading the BSC books as an eight yr old, I was incredibly impressed with the dibbleness of Claud and Stacey's outfits (not to mention trying to imitate them, much to my family's amusement) but that passed well and truly by the time I was 13! Admittedly however, I was a dork (not a lot has changed! ;D ) so perhaps I could've benefitted from following Claudia's example.

I'm a "dork" too and proud of it. Or maybe we are just "individuals."

I am dork too. Always was and always will be. Anyways, I thought MA and Kristy were always mature. Hey, Kristy is the president of a local semi-monopoly at the tender age of 13 and MA does all of the grunt work - scheduling, etc. At the meetings, Claudia doesn't really have any official duties, and Stacey's job is not all that difficult.

Yeah, Claudia's main role was locating the hidden Ring Dings and Milk Duds. That's maturity!
Personally I think Kristy was the most mature. She was confident, always willing to speak her mind and strictly no-nonsense. Plus, plenty of adults dress in jeans and sweatshirts, it's mainly teenybopper girlies that think the "latest fashions" are a necessity in life. And as for Mary Anne - her favorite hobby was knitting and playing with the cat. She was almost a little old lady!
There is nothing wrong with dorkism! It almost seems to be the new "cool" - it's a lot less expensive, a lot more fun and takes a lot less effort! ;D
