I haven’t read the later books yet, I’ve only recently purchased #81-90 so am reading those for the first time. I’m glad Stacey’s behaviour in this book isn’t forgotten though! Now that I think about it, she’s just like a friend of mine was as a teenager - whenever she had a boyfriend she would just *disappear* ie. we’d just see her at school or on the bus but whenever she was single we’d see a lot more of her. Actually, in later books, after Stacey re-joins, she gets better about that. Never again does she ditch her friends for any boyfriend. Even in Stacey VS the BSC, she remains friends with Claudia and Mary Anne; she doesn't shun all of them completely.

^ I thought Claudia was Stacey’s only bsc friend left because Stacey had ditched Mary Anne because she was too “babyish”.

Thing is, even if Stacey WERE upfront from the outset about not wanting to associate with the BSC or wanting more time with Robert, they still would have been insulting and readers would still be bashing her..just can't win for losing..then again, there is simply no way to nicely tell someone you want nothing to do with him/her.
I myself am guilty of shutting ppl out so I can relate to her..without warning, too..but not because I think I'm too cool for said person, so that's the difference..either way, I guess I'm horrible, too.

Stacey irritates me as I think she puts way too much on impressing guys and climbing the social ladder; but to be fair to her, the BSC have a history of throwing each other under the bus for way less than skipping a job, so their Outraged Morals here were a bit much. (And Dawn goes on to ditch her friend Jill for being embarrassing and a baby in California Diaries, so it's hard to feel too bad for her in this book.)

I always thought Stacey was snobby and this book proved it. She was a total %*#$ all because she got a cool boyfriend. Yuck, she wasn't that terrible...and she came back later and was not snobby anymore.

I was really looking forward to this one, and it didn't disappoint. For some reason I couldn't put it down today.
It's not exactly good. Kristy and Dawn are annoying and Stacey is very snobby. But, aside from the subplot, it is entertaining. I think Peter L might have been the right ghostwriter for this plot... for me personally, his writing style works here.
I think Stacey made some good points. She's 13, she should have a life outside the club. And even as someone who is sensitive, I don't think she HAD to invite the BSC to her party. The problem was inviting Claudia... that made it weird. I would've felt weird about it too. But at the same time, I don't think the party should've been the big issue it was. Stacey made a good point when she said she doesn't invite Robert's friends to BSC stuff. A person can have two groups of friends and do different things with them.
The other stuff, though, was uncalled for. I think as early as #8 there were hints that Stacey could be flaky about work. But being late to meetings all the time, calling and canceling last minute (I can't stand this kind of thing irl unless it is necessary), and letting Charlotte down was very irresponsible behavior. I don't really understand how she goes on about maturity, because that kind of thing is actually super immature.
That being said, I totally see what she's saying otherwise. Dawn spying on her was ridiculous, they were acting a bit embarrassing in Burger Town (I give this a pass though, since they are 13), and the teasing about Robert at meetings was honestly pretty annoying. I understand her growing apart from the BSC and wanting more time to do more normal things.
I do find her snobby, though, what with how she gets so annoyed about Mal and Jessi's giggling (they're 11 ffs, that's normal), her embarrassment over what Mary Anne is wearing (there's nothing wrong with Mickey Mouse and I <3 My Kitty), etc. She feels mean-spirited here.
I also feel bad for Claudia in this book. I can imagine the awkwardness... I've been caught in the middle before and it is not fun. Also, she is probably the best character in this book, trying to keep the peace until the party (yes, I don't think the party was a big deal, but I totally understand Claudia feeling weird being there).
I feel like I'm complaining a lot, but I'm mostly trying to say I can see both sides here.

For me there's a big difference between "cat mom" or "my cat is my bestie" compared to "I <3 my kitty". It's little kid talk and I get why Stacey would find it embarrassing. Putting her in kiddy clothes feels regressive for her character and only happened to serve the plot.

Putting her in kiddy clothes feels regressive for her character and only happened to serve the plot. Yeah usually she's described as preppy, so it is a little off. I think it's possible that something like "I <3 my kitty" is just normal now, but back then the pet parent stuff wasn't as common. Idk, since I was a kid I can't remember. I can't decide if Mickey/ Minnie Mouse merch is OOC for Mary Anne. Mary Anne also says, "We're still the bestest of friends!" when Stacey apologizes to her. The sticker is in that same scene. I couldn't think of the right word for this, but regressive feels about right. It felt like Peter L was trying to make the BSC seem as babyish as possible to justify Stacey's actions a bit. Although the straws up the nose and spying ("mysteries") seem very IC.

This is a Peter L book. One of the few I like.

I get the feeling that peter did that as well.
