Kristy getting annoyed over Shannon 'implying' that stepchildren are less important than biological children by saying that anyone wanting ransom money of Watson would be a lot more likely to take Karen or Andrew was a bit silly. At the end of the day, she would have to know Shannon was right. Totally agree! That part was pretty eyeroll worthy. I really, really liked the physical description of Shannon in this book. Usually the physical descriptions of characters are like, "She has brown hair and brown eyes!" That completely captures how that person looks! But I think they spent a page or two really describing what she looks like, specifically her facial structure. I really liked that - I think she's the only character in the series who was described in that much detail. I actually like that they said she's had "a million" boyfriends, since they also said she's not particularly pretty - I think it makes a more dimensional character. Overall, I just really liked Shannon in this one. Someone already mentioned Shannon's "Come out of the closet" comment to Kristy. I'm not sure why, but there were a lot of lines in this book that when taken COMPLETELY out of context, sounded double entendre-ish to me. But I was probably just imagining it. It bothered me that at the Halloween Hop, a couple won the Funniest prize for their surfing dinosaurs costumes, and Kristy and Bart won the Most Unusual prize for their lobster outfits. Seriously? Lobsters are more unusual than surfing dinosaurs? Shouldn't those prizes have been switched around? And of course the kids had to go trick-or-treating as Wizard of Oz characters.

I don't really buy into the Kristy's a lesbian theory, but that part totally made me do a double take when I reread it as an adult. So I don't think you're imagining it - or maybe we both are. I liked Shannon a lot in the book too and it makes me wish there were more books featuring her. There are some people who can't see why others like her, since we know so little about her, but she seemed pretty cool to me. I'm currently rereading "Jessi's Big Break," and Shannon comes to Jessi's last BSC meeting before she heads to New York just to see her off. I thought that was really sweet of her, especially since I don't really remember the two of them interacting much. And I agree, I like how they describe Shannon in more detail than the others - it's more interesting than just "she's drop-dead gorgeous!" like we get with Stacey, Claudia and Dawn.

Does anyone else think the mysteries in the regular series are better than the books in the mystery series?
I recently found a drawing I did when I was in the third grade for an assignment to draw an unillustrated scene in a book. I drew Shannon getting hit in the head and gave her a witch nose. Still not entirely clear on what a ski jump nose is; Google imaging brought forth a picture of Ann Coulter.

^ ahh, ann coulter. you never know where she will pop up next.
when i was a little kid, the part where kristy says she thinks she saw a face in the window freaked me out. i remember sitting in my bed that night and i was so scared i couldn't sleep. (this was elementary school.) and then i reread last night, and yes, i still live at home. so i was sleeping in the same bed in the same room, afraid of the same window :]
ITA agree with everyone who said one game was a lame world series, especially since their reasoning was that little kids wouldn't be able to handle more games. they shouldn't have scheduled ANY extra games. they should have just CALLED the next few games "the world series." i don't believe that the idea machine couldn't think of a single way to extend a world series.

Bart's notes to Kristy were a bit strange, to say the least. It seems odd that he would write, "I love you" and everything else that he wrote in the notes. It's nice seeing Shannon outside Chapter 2.

Yeah Ann never ceases to surprise us I often wonder when I read this who went as who... my guess - Dorothy - Karen (has to be the bloody centre of attention) Scarecrow - David Michael (often the most popular character of the trio and being older will more likely get his way) Lion - Andrew (Ahh I just think he'd be cute in a lion costume) Tinman - Emily (often the least popular of the trio and she can't exactly argue... she probably just wears a tinfoil funnel on her head)

^This book ties in with Karen's Ghost, the kids' costumes are in that one. Karen is the Wicked Witch, David Michael is the Lion, Andrew is Toto, and Emily's a Munchkin. Nancy is Dorothy.

Does anyone else think the mysteries in the regular series are better than the books in the mystery series? I do! I loved the mysteries that were part of the regular series. I never really got past #10 with the mystery series because I just didn't find them as interesting overall as the regular books.

I find this book amusing. I mean, Kristy in love with a boy...come on. That came out of the blue for someone who appears to have really no interest in boys. I really wanted one BSCer who wasn't all lovey with a boy. I guess Jessi is the one I'll look to.
I did love the three stooges cheerleaders! I can only imagine what that looked like and hope that they provided some comic relief with some of the stooges antics.

^If Hannie did reject the WOZ idea than most definitely, kudos to her. Way too many WOZ and Lucy references in the books.
I agree Wiggirl, that Kristy's sudden "love" for Bart and his in return did come out of no where. I think prior to this book, there were a few "dates" between them casually mentioned but not shown at all. I wish we had gotten to see one of them at least. I actually liked Kristy and early Bart. In this one, he was way too over the top with the gushing letters. I don't think Kristy would have been a fan of that for long. I was sorry when their relationship ended so suddenly in Kristy + Bart.

Jessi had Quint and Curtis. You'll have to look to Abby.

All of this talk about ski jump noses and Ann Coulter is making me imagine Shannon looking like Ann Coulter as an adult, and that's one image I DON'T want to have in my head. Shannon > Ann Coulter. I think this is one of the books, besides her own, that features Shannon the most. I agree that the love letters seemed really out of character for Bart. I wonder whose fingernails were in the letter? Cokie's? Also, booboo mentioned this, but I love the continuity with Karen's Ghost! Edited to add ~ I have the new version of this book and in the note to the reader, Ann mentions how Cokie "might" have one of her own books someday. I really wish that would have happened. It could have made for a REALLY interesting read!

^ Yeah, a "Cokie's Story" would have been fun, if it had been handled right. I would have liked to see her get some depth as a character....

"Cokie's Story" would have been kind of like "The Truth About Taffy Sinclair." I remember the tagline on the front cover read "Taffy finally tells her side of the story!" Did any of you ever read the Taffy Sinclair books (or the Fabulous Five series that followed a few years later)?
Starrynight, I agree that it would have been interesting to see Cokie more developed. The few chapters she got in SS#9 didn't really show much depth.
