^ Lol, I don't know. I just kinda thought that if it could happen towards one direction, why not the other? I've heard of teenage girls liking younger guys even if the gap is around 5 years. And besides, if Shannon is unattractive but still managed to get tons of dates maybe she gets it from where ever she could get it from? I don't think Shannon is unattractive so much as striking - I.e., not cookie-cutter, all-American girl features, but not ugly. If you're 13 and like an 8 year old, I'm sorry, there's something severely wrong with you. 30 and 25? Normal. But there is such a huge difference between 8 and 13.

And I don't even want to know what one could "get" from an eight year old. That is child molestation, plain and simple.

^ Well, what I meant by "get" is getting a date with him. To me, if I see a 13 year old on a date with an 8 year old I would just think that it was just puppy love. It would be young people exploring the world of infatuation.

I'm with greer on this. 8 and 13 isn't appropriate no matter which person is older. That's especially true considering how fast teens grow up these days.

Yeah, my sister is thirteen and my brother is eleven, and even those two years make a huge difference at that age.

Yeah but then why is it okay for Buddy to like Shannon? Or for Stacey to like Wes?
And I just think any (love) relationship is okay as long as both parties are willing participants, not forced, coerced or manipulated in any way and the love is genuine. I think that people's aversion to, say, a 13 year old dating an 8 year old is just a product of those people being raised in a culture that promotes that value rather than a product of people coming to their own conclusions.
To add, I understand that people don't like those kinds of love pairings because they see the potential for abuse by the older person if he/she wanted and the ease he/she could carry it out because he/she is bigger and probably socially wiser/more knowledgeable and/or more intelligent in other ways. But is that the only reason?

A thirteen year old has gone through puberty, an eight year old hasn't. It's normal to have crushes on people older when you're a kid, but to reciprocate is illegal and morally wrong - and I'm honestly not sure why I even have to explain this to you.

I've been on both ends of the crush-on-someone-too-old. As the one with the crush I was 12, and so was the kid who had a crush on me about 8 years later. That one was funny because his sister, his mom, and I were all working in the same office. And I remember this kid when he was born! I was as gracious as I could be and I've never let on that I knew he had a crush on me. (FWIW, that "kid" is now a foot taller than I am and is a sailor on a carrier!)

I had crush on guy, who was few years younger than me. One day, I told someone, I called him on the phone. That person told me, I couldn't call him, cause he was minor at the time. I just got the long lecture about it. He was going work the same place, I used to work at. I didn't know, you can't talk to a minor on the phone. I was in my early 20's. After that, I never saw him again. Now, he's in his 20's. The place, I used to work at. Moved to a different state. He's probably has girlfriend or maybe married by now. Over the years, the crush feeling went away. I like older guys now.

I realized my post about Poor Mallory somehow ended up in this thread! I did also read this book last night and Bart really was creepy with those love notes. I think the idea was very sweet but turned too extreme. I did like that Shannon was more involved in this story and that Kristy even seemed a little closer to David Michael, shades of the very first BSC books. I would love to have seen a picture of the surfing dinosaur costumes that won a prize at the Halloween Hop, they sounded very funny. It reminds me of how years ago a Burger King out here had a dinosaur that wore a back-pack and I think also sun glasses. It was supposed to be a Hollywood tourist. It wasn't too cute but the idea reminded me of the costumes in this book. Is this book, aside from a little bit in "MA's Bad Luck Mystery," the start of the girls not going to an adult even in a dangerous situation or one that they were truly frightened about? I can understand in this book at first not being concerned for safety and just wanting to figure out who Kristy's admirer was but once Kristy got some of those creepy Cokie notes and even had the thought of possibly being sought after by a kidnapper, definitely time to talk with her mom and Watson. I know this has been talked about many a time but add me to never understanding how keeping information from a parent or adult when there is a threat=being either a super sitter or extra mature. I think for the most part each of the BSC members is blessed to have at least one or more good adults in their lives and they should have been turned to more often. Lighter note, I realized that Bart tells us his parents wore the lobster costumes years ago at a party. I had for some reason thought they did so in middle school. We are told Bart is very tall, I just had my teeth cleaned last week and my hygienist shared that her son who will be 15 in June is already 6'1". Maybe Bart's mom is smaller (Kristy is said to be 5 feet tall) or her costume was somehow altered to fit. They definitely were unusual choices but brought me a smile to think of Crabs for Grabs in Sea City. Not of the Crabs of course literally being for grabs but Sea City, one of my most favorite fictional places.

It was a little contrived for Shannon to think Bart was sending threats (I guess he really is so competitive or comes off that way) but otherwise this book was really well-done creepy and, more so than in books 2 and 17, it wasn't so obvious who the villain was and how the story would conclude.

It's also pretty extreme/OOC for Kristy to, even after the mystery was solved, like/fear Bart so much that she considers if she should have let his team win (and dark humor-amusing that the book somewhat conflates the two reasons) but it was nice for the book to end with her having to reject neither her tomboyish tendencies nor romantic interest.
