i guess it's different for claudia because she can eat all she wants and never gain weight. she's not binging, she just has "a fast metabolism." so lame.

Good to see you back, Oldhickory. When I was much younger my metabolism was "faster," also. Yet I never scarfed down an entire (full size) bag of chips or candy bars at one sitting either. Claudia

^ Maybe Claudia had a thyroid problem and that could explain her fast metabolism.

^Doubtful but in Stoneybrook almost anything is possible. I think she was just a "lucky" young teen in terms of eating. Sort of O/T, I have always wished Claudia had wished she were a Pike so "food rules" would be much more up to her. That would have been interesting had she realized that and maybe gotten to (somehow) stay over at Mal's for a while.

i don't remember which book it was, but i think the pikes put oreos or something on her sandwich. that might have been too much! but i know what you mean. i always got the feeling that claudia ate the way she did because it was a way for her to rebel against her family (in a tame, nice sort of way.) maybe if she had the option to eat however she wanted, the junk food would have been less of an escape.

^In Ghost Cat, Claudia teases Mal about what the Pikes are having for dinner that night. I don't remember what she says just some unusual combination. Mal replies only bland, (not very good sounding) food. I don't remember about the oreos. I used to love oreos. I know that is O/T but true. I think you're absolutely right about Claudia. I am reading SS#10 and at the meeting before Stacey, Dawn, Mal, and Jessi leave for Sea City, Claudia is depressed about having 5 more days left of summer school. Her solution is to chow down on some twinkies.

Perhaps she is just an emotional eater then! I can relate

^That could be since she does tend to over-eat often times without thinking about what she's doing (like in the book--I don't remember which one--where she sat either at her desk or bed and ate an entire bag of mini candy bars without realizing it). Maybe it's a combination of both. When it doesn't "work" wouldn't she try something else? Or could that be the "rebellion" part, hoping her parents will ultimately notice? Semi O/T but I used to wish Claudia would one day catch either her mom her dad eating candy.

^I remember that. What was Mrs. Kishi reading? Not all romances are trashy and lol I was wondering if it said the title. That is true. Can't you see her holed up with a romance book, perhaps even alongside a *gasp* Nancy Drew book while furtively snacking on some m and m's?

Jessi annoyed me in this book. She was like, should I tell someone or wait until Mary gets worse. Then Mindy told Mary to loose weight. When she already thin.
Sub-plot was okay. I didn't like Kristy in this one. She was too bitchy towards Shannon.
I love it when Claudia & the kids making snow village. That's kind of fun to do. (But, I don't like the cold weather.)
I'm like a Yo-Yo I loose weight, then gain it back. But, I'm not worried. I like for me. Back in 2008. my parents & I, went to this diet program. For like a year. We went like two days out of the week. The meetings was so boring. That, I didn't want be there. But, my mom insisted I go with them. The only part, I like was the cooing class. Cause, we cooked a healthier meal. (Like pizza.) Taste okay. I even tried Sushi. I like it. But, that's the only time, I tried it. (I always like tried new food items.) At the diet program, we had see a diet doctor. We had wait until they come in the room. Then, the diet doctor asking all kind of questions. I had diet journal. TO write down, what I ate. We're given these special drinks. That taste nasty. (it was okay, for while. But, I got tired of it.) I was like, I wanted eat real food, not some diet drink. That taste it horrible. During at that year. During the Holidays, I could only eat 1 meal not a second meal. Don't eat too much snack at my ex-friends house. But, I was glad, we only went 1 year. I told myself. Was I pleasing them or myself? I was pleasing them. I was feeling miserable. I was like, if people don't like, what I weight. It's their problem not mine. The people in the meeting were around my parents age or older than them or younger. But, I really didn't people around my age. So, their wasn't really any people around my age talk to afterwards. No, I will not go to other diet program as long as I live. Once is enough.

I was a little unsure how much I was going to like this book since the BSC doesn't tend to handle the "issue" books in the most graceful way, but overall I felt that the issue was handled decently. I've struggled my whole life to have a healthy relationship with food, and I felt like Mary and her issues were written pretty well, at least for a book in the BSC universe.
On the other hand, I do feel like it was written more realistically in Maggie's books in the California Diaries. I just read that whole series for the first time this past summer, and I was pretty surprised at how realistic her thoughts were and how I could relate to them, like how she almost gets a sense of power from feeling empty.
The one thing that I really disliked about how Mary's problem was handled in this book is that one of the contributing factors to her anorexia is that another ballerina, Mindy Howard, basically tells her she should lose 10 pounds. I'm certainly not an expert on the subject, but I feel like for the vast majority of anorexic girls, they become anorexic ONLY because they think they're fat themselves, NOT because anyone has ever told them they should lose weight. I felt like they were kinda misrepresenting the issue by having someone telling her to lose weight, y'know?

I felt like they were kinda misrepresenting the issue by having someone telling her to lose weight, y'know? One of Janine's books that the BSC were looking through said something about this. That comments from others could be a trigger to extreme dieting. I can see how remarks from others could push a person to look more critically at themselves. I don't think it would lead to anorexia in most cases, but I'm not an expert, either. My favorite part of this book is Jessi hanging out with her dance class buddies at Burger King. I always liked seeing the girls spend time with people outside of the BSC because it made them more like real, well-rounded people with interests outside of the club. I also liked Jessi's embarrassment at her dad walking into BK. Cute and typical of someone her age who doesn't want her new, slightly older friends to see her as a baby.

^ i loved that part too, partly because jessi is the one girl i would least expect to be embarrassed by her dad. i have always liked the closeness of the ramsey family, and i thought it was cute that him just walking into a room was suddenly embarrassing to her. she just turned into a normal girl. maybe because she was surrounded by normal people for once.
