I feel like jessi is one of those people that are friends by geography and never really makes a true connection b/c she has too much on her plate. True; IMO Jessi was probably the "most likeable" BSC member in the sense she could get along with anyone without being forced/forcing herself and she also never made fun of other people that I can recall. About the book, (to my recollection, haven't re-read it as an adult) it seemed that they were finally touching on more serious subjects and it's still true to this date that dancers are "forced" to remain super-thin in order to keep advancing/performing so the plot was believable and it's a common dilemma for middle school kids to choose between being loyal to a peer and keeping a secret and doing the right thing by telling an adult their friend's problem.

I think it's funny that the first time they go to BK they're like, "none of us are really used to this food, but just this once" and then go several more times after that. Lol. And yeah, Watson's not the only millionaire in town

I always wished for an update, but as far as I know no one from this book is ever mentioned again.

This is very silly, but I'm very particular about reading these in order and had a mini heart attack when I saw the thread title. It lists this as book #62 for some reason.
Anyway, I actually like this one. I think it's one of the better Jessi books. Yes, Jessi should've told Mme Noelle something earlier, but I understand why she was hesitant and she IS only 11. I think many 11-year-olds would react the same way. I thought this book handled the topic decently. I liked the scholarship part in the book and for some reason Martha getting it just made me feel really happy. Idk lol.
I liked the Shannon subplot, but I found Kristy to be a bit annoying. I think her reaction is in character because of her abandonment issues (probably coming from her father leaving her), but honestly, if she reacts to Shannon spending time with her other BSC friends this way, I think she should see a therapist. Especially considering her behavior in MA's Makeover. Hopefully one day she does, because acting like this is only going to push people away. I know because I've done similar things.
How did my post get so serious?! I guess this is a very serious book. I've never suffered from anorexia or binge-eating (Claudia shows signs of the latter in this book. Eating an entire bag of potato chips in 30 minutes because she's stressed? Girl, that is GOING to catch up with you), but I understand why people do. Our society makes it very, very hard to be healthy. People are shamed for eating "bad food," but holidays and events mostly serve unhealthy food which makes it very hard to stick to a diet. All American holidays are tied to eating a big meal full of comfort food or lots of junk food. Many junk foods are cheaper than health foods. Etc.
It felt sort of random that Kristy didn't have time to hang out with Shannon. Since this takes place in winter, were the Krushers even practicing? It's also weird that Shannon comes by to hang out while one of the girls is baby-sitting. Feels sort of... unprofessional? Also, if that WAS okay to do, Kristy could've just invited her over while she was sitting for the Papadakises, which she seems to do a lot.
The only chapter I didn't like was when the girls were looking up info about anorexia. It was just so obviously trying to educate the reader and didn't sound like a natural conversation. It's a kids book, though, so I'll give it a pass.
I really liked Jessi hanging out with her ballet friends on Tuesdays. Like many others, I wished this continued.
