I know there is a thread on this one but can't find it anywhere ;D Anyway... I reread this morning and always forget how much I like this one. It is probably one of my favorites. I thought Jessi showed a lot of insight into Danielle and how she must be feeling. I think a lot of sick kids (or any age reader) can probably really relate to her and I think the book actually did a pretty good job making her a realistic character rather than a "token" cancer patient. I also enjoyed reading about Becca and Charlotte and the other kids and how they responded to Danielle and found it quite realistic. And I loved the Disney trip description at the end ;D I was so glad Danielle got to go. Even if it isn't a "happy" book, I do find it "uplifting" and really enjoy it.

I was glad danielle got to go... I always feel so bad that kids get sick. Thats just something kids shouldn't have to go through. Glad the BSC touched on it

I've noticed that a lot of people dont like this book, but I always liked it. Maybe it's because I was a cancer kid myself and can relate to Danielle (I was too young to go to Disney World or get a wish though. My friend's little brother who lived up the street from me had the same doctor that I did and got to go though.. I was jealous haha... we're both good okay now though ) RIght.. I liked this one cause it was simple...there wasn't really any other plot in it to distract us...and like I said before, I could relate to Danielle.

Thinking about this book again, I think Danielle probably felt a lot like Claudia when she went to school right after Mimi died how she felt worse because people treated her so strangely. I know that a lot of people don't know how to react to someone who is seriously ill or has just suffered some big loss so they try to either be all "peppy" or just stay away. That usually makes it worse for the person who is like "just treat me normally!" I really liked that Jessi seemed to pick up on this with Danielle. She sometimes seems pretty perceptive with that type of thing.

I didn't like this one. Kristy decides to stop the club for a few weeks so everyone can volunteer? Not likely. Jessi's an acceptable substitute for an actual teacher? Please. Not that Jessi did any real work. She seemed to hang out with Danielle more than Becca did.

A lot of people dislike this book, so I wasn't expecting anything much. But I rather liked it really. I can see how they were still able to run the club. It wasn't like they were volunteering with all their free time. And I think that the Kid's Club could have run with one teacher, it wasn't like the kids were out of control and didn't want to be there or anything.

^ Agree, lark. I also didn't get the impression that Jessi was doing much more than supervising and like lark said, the kids were pretty good and self sufficient. I kind of got the impression that Jessi was just another "body" there to help out when and where she was needed - kind of like the "teen leaders" we had in 4h.

I'm surprised to read most people liked this one as it's usually hated online ;D
But ITA, I didn't think anything was wrong with Jessi as an "assistant" if they already had one teacher.

I didn't mind this one either. I thought it was a good storyline... very true sadly. And you're right aln, Jessi is quite perceptive.

I actually like this book, too, but I think Kristy deciding to stop the club for a month is totally unlike her, and I'm surprised that Stoneybrook didn't fall apart that month without the BSC.

^ Agree about Kristy stopping the club seeming out of character. But I guess being really charitable and volunteering and doing things like that are just as in character for her, so maybe. I didn't comment before on this but was just thinking that I also felt for Greg. Having a sibling with a serious disease must be really hard and quite scary for anyone, especially a little kid his age.

I actually like this book, too, but I think Kristy deciding to stop the club for a month is totally unlike her, and I'm surprised that Stoneybrook didn't fall apart that month without the BSC. The club seems to conveniently be able to stop for the numerous vacations the BSC take, so I guess whatever back-up is in place for those occasions was also used here

But the club didn't exactly stop... they still went to meetings if they could and a least one would always be at a meeting.

I never had cancer, but my dad did, so I can relate to Greg. I was 11 (Mal & Jessi's age!) when he was diagnosed, and it was so hard because I couldn't understand why this was happening to him, to my family. I'm very happy to say he's been cancer free for 15 years.
On a lighter note, I always liked this book and the idea of the Kids Can Do Anything club. Danielle's story was sad, but I'm glad she got one of her wishes. I would have loved to see a follow-up book (assuming they'd been allowed to grow up) about whether she got to graduate SES.

^ Totally agree about a follow up book. I probably wouldn't have wanted one so far in the future, though, but maybe just another one after Troublemaker. Or I would have liked it if Danielle had been in more books and had been a main client. I really liked her character. I'm glad you're dad is doing better! My grandpa also had cancer several times and my grandma is being treated right now for breast cancer, so I can also understand these feelings. You know you're not supposed to ask "why us" and be angry but sometimes you can't help it. I know I struggle with feeling like everything bad always happens to my family and not as much to anyone else. Reading BSC books like this one really helps me deal with a lot of my feelings. I guess the BSC is good "therapy" for me. ;D
