I always liked Danielle cause she has the same last name as me and I was so bummed when I came online and found out people didn't like her, lol. I haven't read this one in ages but now I want to, if I ever get time for anything besides work and school.

I just reread and I think this is one of my favorite BSC books. I really like everything about it – especially the interaction between the Ramseys and the fact that Danielle gets to go to Disney (also love the Disney description). I even enjoyed the subplot this time. I know I’m probably in the minority but find this book very touching and think Ann Martin (noticed she personally wrote this one ;D) did a great job with a sensitive/depressing subject but made it realistically uplifting (if that makes sense ;D) Even though it didn’t end with a perfect “happy ending,” I thought it was still a “hopeful” ending and really liked that. ;D I think this is definitely my favorite Jessi book and one of my top 10 favorite BSC books.

This actually was better reading last night than in the past. I would have preferred if the other sitters' volunteer experiences had more of a focus than just Jessi's. Maybe this could have been a super special of sorts. I would have liked reading of Stacey's interactions with younger kids who had diabetes "live." I realized, we never read much at all of Mal at the rec program other than the little boy who brought her weeds. I felt badly for Danielle but I admit to not really liking her character either. Too bad other than Danielle, the other volunteer programs never were mentioned again. Kristy and the babies was sweet. We only got a hint of MA with Frankie, a little more about Dawn and the Baker kids. I think this was a case of too much stuff crammed in one book. Oh, I know, was this the first book of Charlotte being demoted back to 3rd grade? I know come future books she's in 4th grade (where she belongs at times) but I think this was the first book that the Ghosties made the choice, probably for Becca, of putting her back in 3rd--the grade she "skipped."

I really liked this one too! It just made me feel good. I guess it was all the little kids caring about other people and making them things for when they are in the hospital. I would like to think that some kids would do stuff like this! I thought Danielle was sweet and handled others reactions of her pretty well. ITA Zoar that I would have loved to read about some of the other BSC members experiences. I would have liked if one of them had done something not involving kids. Maybe MA volunteers at an animal shelter or something! As always - love the Disney references

It is still so cool you work at DW. Good idea on the "non-kid" volunteer work. Maybe one of them would have adopted a dog. Or maybe become involve with the local office of some big agency/cause. I know they are probably too young for "Big Brothers, Big Sisters," but that type of thing might have brought out a little Stacey/Char type experience or if they helped raise money for something...lots of possibilities.

I liked reading about Kristy and the babies, because one would expect her to want to be with the older kids so she could organize some type of activity for them. It kept her from falling into her usual caricature in this book.

^That's true. It's too bad Kristy (or any of them) ever resumed volunteering. We might have gotten to read some sweet Kristy/young(er) DM moments. (If Kristy "remembered" any while working at the day care center, I mean).

I just finished reading this one and I noticed that on the cover, Becca is wearing earrings (identical to Jessi's, actually). If it was such a big deal for Jessi to get her ears pierced at 11, I doubt Becca got them done at 8!

Maybe those earrings are clip-on's.

If it was such a big deal for Jessi to get her ears pierced at 11, I doubt Becca got them done at 8! this is the story of my life. my parents are really conservative so i had to fight for every freedom, including getting my ear pierced again. (true story, i wanted one extra earring because of claudia.) when i was 17 i finally convinced her to let me get it done, and then my sister (who was 15) started complaining that it wasn't fair that i could and she couldn't, so she got her ear pierced too at the same time. same thing for later bedtimes, later curfews, etc. everything i had to fight for, my sister got easily, two years younger than i did. i could easily see becca saying "well if jessi gets her ears pierced i should have pierced ears too." they are only three years apart.

I know so many people who got piercings under age 10, it's like they only act like this in children's books.
Anyways, did it bother anyone else when Jessi narrated that she first thought Danielle looked like a little old man?

I really like Mr. Katz and wish he had been mentioned again. He came across as a good guy and teacher--he should have been Charlotte's teacher in fact. I'm guessing Danielle and possibly Vanessa were in his class though I know we are never told what grade he teaches. Love that Danielle got him mouse ears at Disney World. (Page 129)
What I didn't like (still) was not much info on the other girls' volunteering. The volunteering for everyone else could have just been a separate book or even a Super Special sort of like Heritage Day but maybe Community Day? This book should have just been about Danielle with Greg being the subplot. I felt so bad for him. It seemed like everyone ignored him completely at the barbecue. His pov would have been interesting to read about especially if he was friends with any of the clients "we" know.

greg and todd masters would probably be really good friends. both of them seem like sweet kids who are constantly overshadowed by their siblings.

zoar, I think Mr. Katz shows up again in Mallory Doesn't Understand Fiction. Oops, I mean, Mallory Pike, #1 Fan. He doesn't have a very big role though.
Agree that the other girls volunteering was mostly boring, but I guess they had to do something.
