Arrgghhh! I just want to SMACK Kristy! Where does she get off, ordering people around all the time and making Jessi feel like a criminal for arriving, like, one minute late if the traffic is bad after ballet class. And what's with the girls just accepting the Looks and bowing down to her constantly?!
No wonder Wendy wasn't prepared to take that crap. Okay, I admit it was a little irresponsible arriving late at the Pikes, but FFS, she did know that Jessi was going to be there and it wasn't like she could just walk out on the babysitting job she already had. Also, as far as offering every job to the entire club? Sometimes that's not always plausible or convenient, particularly a spur-of-the-moment thing. And what a brown-nosing tattletale Mary Anne was, to go running to Kristy about Wendy arriving late to the Pike job.
Personally I don't think turning up a few minutes late to the odd meeting makes one a 'bad baby-sitter'. I was pleased to see Jessi remained friends with Wendy in the end, instead of snubbing her, as is the usual attitude to any non-BSC member.
Also another reason to hate the Pike parents. Mallory was constantly tired and her mother made an appointment to see a doctor the following week. Mallory was angrily berating herself for being so airheaded because she'd forgot to arrange a sitter for that time. UM HELLO, isn't it usually the child's parents who are responsible for arranging baby-sitters, not their older sister? Also, Mallory was having heaps of time off school, so why couldn't her mum just take her to the doctors during the day?

I agree with you about Kristy and her Looks, and how strange it is that everyone bows down to her. I didn't like Wendy that much though *shrugs* I thought that she should've been at the Pike job on time, or at least told Jessi that she'd be late so that Jessi wasn't panicking.

Oh I agree that Wendy should've been at the Pikes on time and definitely called Jessi, but I could also see the reasoning behind why she was late. Kristy just infuriated me so much in this book that I couldn't help rooting for Wendy.

I just reread this one. I do agree with you about Kristy being a pain and taking things to the extreme. She made me a little mad. I especially felt bad for Mallory. Kristy didn't seem too concerned about her and neither did anyone else. It is no fun to be tired all of the time and to have your friends not understand makes it worse. At the same time, I think that Wendy was very irresponsible. I guess I'm just a stickler for punctuality but I wouldn't have wanted her as my babysitter. And if you make a commitment to be at a meeting - you should be there. I am glad that Jessi stayed friends with her but think that she made some real mistakes. I also think that Mary Anne did the right thing by telling the rest of the club about Wendy's lateness. Since she got the job through the BSC, her behavior reflects on the club as a whole. Just my thoughts.
On a positive note... I loved Snow White and the Seven "Zorbs". Suzi Barrett can be really cute - like when she and Buddy were talking about Marnie and the "Ham" face.

Oh, Suzi Barrett was hysterical in this one "think again, buckaroo!" haha, love it.
I felt bad for Mallory as well and really thought it was bitchy of Jessi to be so exasperated with her. If an eleven yr old is falling asleep all over the place and can barely walk from one room to the next without taking a power nap, there is obviously something physically wrong with them and they're not just being lazy.

I think if Kristy hadn't been so rude to Wendy, she would have made a decent associate member.

Yeah; the bsc just couldn't comprehend someone who wanted to baby-sit without it being their whole life.

the whole thing about how she "should have offered her job to the club", especially when she got it THAT MORNING, WAS SO ANNOYING.

I really don't understand that. So, if Mrs. Barrett were to walk across the street one morning and ask Mallory to baby-sit that afternoon, would Mallory have to call every club member for approval? That's so dumb and pointless.

^ TOTAL, COMPLETE WORD!!!
That ludicruous scene made me unable to appreciate the BSC's POV at all. I was totally sympathetic with Wendy after that.

meh, both Kristy and Wendy were annoying in this book. Kristy did come off as a total dictator obsessed with rules and whatnot, but Wendy came off as irresponsible and completely lax about the whole thing as well. She was right, she wouldn't have fit in with the BSC. Their rules were clearly established, right or wrong, and they weren't going to change, so it was best to just go her separate way.

I feel like that "offer EVERY job around" rule was made up for this book. I can remember one book where a parent calls up a babysitter early one weekend morning and says they need a babysitter because they got called into work or something. Whoever it was didn't offer the job around before taking it. And if Kristy's parents step out to go to the grocery store and leave her in charge does she call around first to see if its okay with everyone else? It always seemed to me that half of the jobs Kristy, Mallory and Jessi did at home were spur of the moment. Kristy bothered me in this book, but Wendy was irresponsible.
Isn't this the book that has "?" next to "Alternate Officer"? Haha I loved that!

She was right, she wouldn't have fit in with the BSC. Their rules were clearly established, right or wrong, and they weren't going to change, so it was best to just go her separate way. True, but most people invited to join a club of 13 yr old middle schoolers would just assume it was an opportunity for a bunch of girls to hang out, not a truly "official" organisation with rules and regulations that must be adhered to at all times or serious consequences suffered. Wendy was probably legitimately confused about the arrangement and thought the boot-camp style of the club and Kristy's bitchy dictatorship was just a way of picking on the new kid. It reminds me of the movie Mean Girls, where the Plastics had rules about how many times certain outfits and clothing should be worn in a week. Yes, the BSC were supposed to be responsible babysitters - more of a business than a club! - but when push comes to shove, Kristy had no real authority over anyone. The BSC members willingness to obsessively follow the rules, never questioning anything and quivering under her Look was one of the strangest things about the series.
