^I'm glad someone liked gym. Not me. I had to take it 4 years altogether 7th-10th grade. In those days 9th Grade, despite being counted as the first year of high school, was still taken at a junior high school--we even had a graduation.

Well, it did help that I was able to take whatever gym class I wanted. As a result, I never took volleyball, something I didn't like.

^That would make a huge difference! You really got to pick whatever sport you wanted on a given day?

i guess i was pretty lucky as far as PE classes go. we always did a ping pong unit in middle school, and in high school we only had to take two PE classes. i picked aerobics, so it was all girls and a lot of fun.

It wasn't for a given day, it was for the entire semster. So, if I chose to take yoga, I would take yoga for the entire semester. Then for the next semseter, I could take yoga again or I could take some other gym course.

Oldhickory, I used to love playing ping pong.
Anzuhana, got it. Still sounds great and like a much better, more positive way, of handling PE.

Although I could relate to Mallory in this book, her attitude was pretty skinky. She would also have sudden outburts at the teacher and the students. It's funny because Mallory is always characterized as "calm" and "level-headed".

I don't think volleyball is that bad. Granted, I was a fat kid on the volleyball team -- but maybe I liked it more than other sports because there wasn't as much running and, really, it's more about skill (keeping your eye on the ball, knowing when and where it's going to land, etc.)

I liked this book alot b/c I do like Mal. I think she is fun and quirky and has some great comeback lines. I love during the archery moment when the guy asks how she did that, she says "keep your eyes open" which was his snarky remark to her earlier.
I am with a lot of people in that I hated gym. Luckily for me I had one year in high school and most of that was health and sex ed. In elementary school though, I loved it. We had square dancing and tether ball and just a lot of playing on the playground!

^I have the very distant memory of being taught square dancing in early elementary school. I don't remember any specifics just that I think we had a brief lesson in it. Around this time and for a few years afterward, my family frequented a "family restaurant" once a week for dinner. Often times, a group of square dancing ladies, all dressed in costumes would be there. I haven't thought about them in a long time.

I used to love those square dancing lessons. I don't know why, but I thought it was fun to try and keep up with someone calling out a dance. There is a dance club down here called cowboys where they had square dancing one night. it is pretty humorous to watch a bunch of drunk people try to do it!

We were taught square dancing when I was in the fourth grade. We practiced it for weeks and then actually did a performance for an audience. I remember it being easy to learn and a lot of fun.

Obviously the Pikes are not Baptist, because volleyball is an immensely popular pastime among te more conservative Baptists. We're Presbyterians and even play it occasionally.
