^IME, that happened with games like soccer or basketball, where you needed to pass the ball to score. But when we played volleyball in high school, the ball was always slammed directly to whoever wouldn't send it back, because that was a surer way to get a point.

Volleyball is awful, I can totally relate to Mallory. And you're absolutely right, lilafowler, in volleyball the kid who sucks the most is the one who is targetted. ugh. I always hated when we had to play volleyball in PE, my wrists would hurt so bad and the people on my team hated me cause I sucked and would avoid the ball at all costs. I never benched myself, though! Go Mal!

^I loved how Mallory decided to bench herself. I never would have had the guts to do that!

I did it once, and I got detention for it...at least we only had to play sport once a week at my school...I was always terrible at absolutly everything (especially volleyball) but I had a thing for hockey...I still sucked at it, but I liked it

I really liked that Mrs. Pike didn't freak out about the detentions Mallory got. Mal is normally such a goody-goody so it was cool that Mrs. Pike realized that in order to do something so "bad," she must have been really miserable. I thought it was nice that she recognized that and didn't feel the need to punish Mallory further.

^ Mrs Pike was awesome in this book. Her reaction was very un-BSC-parent, who are normally cold and logical (when they make an appearance at all, that is).

I could also really identify with Mallory in this book. All through high school and primary school I despised P.E and always sucked at it. The closest thing to 'sport' I ever participated in was horse riding from age 4 - 15. I didn't mind playing netball at school though, I didn't suck at it too badly. I remember in primary school faking sickness to get out of PE. One day, that backfired nicely as I actually was feeling ill and my teacher didn't believe me. I threw up all over the gym. The odd thing with me is as much as I hate playing sports, I am a huge, huge fan of Aussie rules football, I attend matches every week.

Just reread this and didn't like it as much as everyone else. It was so repetitive. Boys suck. Volleyball sucks. Every chapter. We get it. What the heck happened to the archery team Mal joined? That would have been kinda funny to read about every once in a while.
I appreciate everyone's gym class horror stories though. I was shy and sucky at sports but looking back at my high school volleyball unit I realize that my teacher was kinda cool. Gym was always co-ed at my school. We had assigned teams and played tournaments with every team (didn't it seem like Mal played against the same bully guy every day?). My friend and I were so crappy and not into it that we were put on the same team and allowed to rotate back and forth so we each only had to play half the time. Fridays we got to split ourselves up into "competitive" and "noncompetitive" teams which was the teacher's nice way of shoving all the people like Mal on one side of the gym so the agressive people could play hardcore games on the other side. It still sucked cause we had gym every day for a semester, and therefore played volleyball for like 15 days straight, but I guess I had it easier than some of you.

I hated gym when I was in school. But now I actually do play sports.(for special olympics.) but none of them are team sports though.

I just reread this for the first time in years. I do have sympathy for Mallory because I sucked at gym. However, volleyball was one of the less painfull sports I played at school. I was actually on the girl's volleyball team in high school. (This is NOT the achievement it sounds like, the girls on the volleyball team were the unathletic ones who weren't good at anything). We never won a match. Gym was co-ed at my school through 8th grade. I don't recall us playing volleyball but we must have. I do however remember that while I hated gym class there were some advantages to playing with boys if you were completely non-athletic. Namingly that they were really competitive. Take soccer, all the boys were playing the attack positions and the girls were stuck in defence. But the boys would run into defence and you never had to go near the ball. Of course that got irritating after I learned how to hit a softball and they wouldn't let the girls hit.

I liked at the end when Mallory's brothers made her the cake. (shows that they can be decent little brothers.) Also dose this book in a way forshadow Mallory's troubles in school causing her to go to boarding school?

I really enjoyed the fact that Mallory had enough guts to stand up for herself, and that the teacher (begrudgingly) saw it, too. I kind of expected it from Mrs. Pike, but not from the gym teacher.

Now that I think about it I wonder how my Mom would have reacted if I had been in a similar situation. She felt the same way about gym I did.

I don't know how my parents would react, but I probably wouldn't care so much if my daughter ever did something like that.
