Ugh I hated volleyball in PE, in fact any sport that could break my nose or smash my face in, I despised. I preferred exercise like dance or yoga or badminton. Luckily I'm in my second last year in school and therefore don't have to do PE any more ;D I really felt for Mallory in this book, it's horrible having to do something you're crap at, even worse when everyone's pressurising you or groaning when you make a mistake or make them lose (one of the reasons I used to dread PE).
Btw, very ramdom but I noticed that Macca started this post and realised I haven't seen her on the boards in ages!

Was also wondering where Macca was. Maybe off on a "Super Special"

^Wasn't she pregnant or did I totally imagine that? Perhaps she had the little one?

^If you imagined it, so did I, but I totally forgot! That totally makes sense -- she'd be really busy.

Ahh I didn't know she was pregnant! I wonder if it was a boy or a girl... if this was BSC land it would most likely be a girl as I don't think any male births even occur in the series!

Another self-bencher here. Basketball was my enemy. I didn't get detention though.
Although I haven't read this one in a while, I remember actually liking that the PE teacher pointed out to Mal that she couldn't exactly tell them not to play a good game - because you're more likely to win a volleyball game if you aim at the more hopeless players. Finally, a slight amount of realism in a BSC book. Because while I thought she should have told them to can it with the insults, telling the other team to play a little more badly seemed a bit...silly. I don't know why the other girls on the team didn't just work around Mal, though. That's what we always did in my gym classes. You know someone sucks? If you see a ball headed their way, intercept it. You lose a lot less.
What I never understood was why the teacher made them wear those stupid pinneys (sp?) for volleyball. Don't they exist so you can remember who's actually on your team and who isn't? It's kind of hard to mix up volleyball teams.

It's kind of hard to mix up volleyball teams. That scene where she had to wash those pinneys was gross. I would hate to have to do that.

Never wondered about the pinneys but it is a good point. It's not like the sides are going to get confused. Maybe the pinneys were used for volleyball out of habit because they were used for sports that could be confusing. Washing them does sound gross! What a terrible punishment. Why did the teacher make her do that? I can't remember as it's been a while since I've read this one.

I hated wearing those pinneys. Ours smelled like they had NEVER been washed, and were all tattered. We'd get in trouble for not wearing them correctly though ugh.

Why did the teacher make her do that? I can't remember as it's been a while since I've read this one. Part of her punishment for self-benching. Which, while gross, seemed kind of fair, since regular detention wasn't deterring her. I'm pretty sure the ones we used had never actually been washed. So gross. This book made me so glad I only had gym once or twice a week (usually at least one double-period, ugh.) My classmates weren't mean to me (moreso than any teen girls are ), and there were some sports I was okay at, but every year when basketball, track and softball came around, I wanted to die a little. I went through a phase of cutting gym and never actually got in trouble for it. I swear, I don't think anyone actually noticed I wasn't there.

In high school, part of gym was swimming. A lot of girls ( including myself) would use the period excuse to get out of swimming. I loved it, because I hated being in a bathing suit in front of my classmates.

^We had swimming too (in junior high, not high school. So BSC aged!) and yeah we used the period excuse, but we were forced to run laps around the track if we didn't swim. Supposedly it helps with cramps. I never noticed that... anyway, I don't have a problem with Mal having to wash the pinneys. I mean really, you can't just randomly opt out of things in school and think you're gonna get away with it. What if Claud tried to sit out of math? lol.

They tried to enforce that we had to make up the days we missed, but that actually never happened. My teachers weren't very observant in high school gym.
lol at Claudia trying to sit out at math...
