^^I didn't mind PE that much either! actually it was one of my favorite classes in high school, but I was always pretty determined and athletic.... I wasn't too fond on volleyball though... I had really skinny arms, so after a v-ball match, my hand and arms would sting and be bright red from smacking the ball so hard.

I remember 9th grade, I was in the hospital for an eating disorder (I know very cliche for a ballet dancer, I realize). And when my teachers sent me homework my gym teacher (not know what I was there for) told me to run around the house several times. I guess I oculdn't get out of gym no matter what. ^ Ah, that's too funny.

I was so bad that not only did my teacher once pull me aside and tell me that I may not like the game, but I did need to try (she thought I just wasn't making any effort even though I actually was) I stopped putting in effort after a while, because nobody could tell the difference anyway.

I wanted to be good at sports that required strength but am just too small, I guess I'm so glad I never have to take PE again!

It wasn't that I didn't try either, most of the time (except for the benching incidents), it was just that I was really, really...weak. I couldn't hold myself up on the pull-up bar for an entire second. I'd get up there and just drop. I still do have really weak arms. And I'm slow. And have bad lungs. The only thing I was good at was weight-training - it turned out I had very strong legs. Who knew?

I did put in effort, but no matter what I did I always came out as a clutz for the most part. I was decent in some things like floor hockey, and anytime we had to do stretching I was very flexible because I was a ballet dancer. Pretty much anything else, I was terrible at.

Just read this. When I was in High school, I was too 'cool' to participate. I got away standing around, looking like I was playing mostly. When it came to swimming, i did not want to, mostly cause then i'd have to re-apply my makeup and do my hair etc. I was, and am, a girly girl Anyway, I got away with not swimming each week by forgetting my bathing suit. On the second last lesson, my HPE teacher said if I didn't want to fail, I'd have to get in the pool next lesson. So I bought my suit, and she said, just show me you can swim for like, 2 mins. So I did and passed. (Pass being a D-). Anyway, this book was okay. I enjoyed reading the subplot about the brother switch. BTW, what was up with all the boys? Just a coincidence?

i always hated swimming at school, especially in the winter, because then your hair would freeze in the cold walking back to class.
i remember being inspired by mallory to sit out during softball. bad example, martin.

I hate to say I could relate to Mallory in this book, but...I did big time.
At my high school we did a huge volleyball unit every year and I hated it because I was awful at volleyball. I couldn't serve, I couldn't hit it back, nothing. I wasn't too bad at the other sports, but I stunk big time at volleyball and I totally dreaded the unit. In my freshman year me and another girl would just sit on the sidelines and pretend we were just waiting to be 'rotated' in to play. (Often there were more kids on a team that could play at one time so the extra kids would sit on the side and wait until it was their turn.) It worked for awhile before we were busted. I still hate volleyball.

I didn't mind volleyball if I was just playing for fun on the beach, but in gym class I was so bad at it. I was afraid of the ball because some kids on the other side would serve it so hard! I am so glad I don't ever have to take a PE class again.

My dad and I were just talking about this subject tonight. I was saying how I was always terrible at volleyball because my bones are so tiny that I could barely hit the ball and would always get red welts and stuff from the ball. I have always been athletic but hated gym class, especially since I was "supposed" to be good at it, and really felt for Mal. Though I never, ever would have benched myself. I would have told my mom right away and she probably would have helped me come up with a better solution or talked to the teacher with me. I did like Mrs. Pike in this one, though.

My mom actually helped me out when I was struggling with gym. She knew how I felt so it was good to have her to talk to about.

My Mum was the same. And I will be too. Some kids just aren't made to play sports! I like the idea of having sporting electives though, cause i think it's important to be doing some form of exercise!

I don't think sporting electives are all bad, they just need to make sure they have a sport or workout for everybody's abilities and try to keep it as fair as possible. Not everybody is at the same pace.

^ Agree. I also think that boys and girls shouldn't be together in gym class - at least not in middle school. My mom was a phys ed teacher and has always said that she liked having them separate for reasons like in this book. Kids are too self-conscious, especially at that age.
