I totally agree. I just read (well actually kind of skimmed though) this one because I hadn't before and I was curious about how they adopted Emily Michelle. Seriously, what kind of parents tell their kids "we're adopting a child, she'll be here tomorrow?" How (and why) did they keep it a secret? Elizabeth kept asking how they would feel about another kid, so why didn't she just say "we want to adopt, what do you think?". The lack of realism there annoyed me but probably mostly because I was reading it for the first time at 21 years old. At 7 I would have thought "cool! I hope my mom surprises me with an adopted sister!" Also, just wanted to mention that I totally agree with you about population/limited family size etc. When my husband and I have talked about adopting when we're ready to have kids.

I agree with everything said about Emily Michelle, especially the part about the adoption and the BSC arriving at the party. Shouldn’t this be a FAMILY moment? It seems like the BSC just horns in on everything. It would pretty scary for a two year old to fly to a new place and find a huge crowd of new faces.
I was a little surprised Nanny wasn’t in this book. When does she move in anyways?
Annnd Stacey meets Jessi for the first time! But what was up with that random paragraph about Jessi?
Whhhaattt?? Stacey didn’t say anything about Jessi’s "blackness" at all. She was just introducing her self. What was all that sorry-to-be-so-blunt stuff about?
The Carnival was cute though. I liked reading about that. Jamie is awfully protective of his sister in this book, though. I can only imagine what he’s going to be like when Lucy gets older and starts dating…
The part with Mimi was sad… talking about the TV people, black cows, and box planets, and other things not there… aww... ah, I’m starting to become a Mary Anne!

^ Funny thought about Jamie being protective of Lucy when she starts dating. I never thought much about their relationship but they do seem close after he gets over the initial annoyance with her being born (which is totally understandable). Cute to picture him protecting her from boys coming to take her out ;D

That does sound kind of cute, but she might find it kind of annoying. My brothers were very protective of me when I started dating and it always got on my nerves.

^ Oh, it would definitely be annoying for poor Lucy ;D I was lucky not to have brothers. A protective Dad is bad enough sometimes (though usually I love him for it ;D) I love reading about the kids at the carnival in this one and how excited Jamie is about it. Love his enthusiasm ;D

My dad's pretty protective too because I'm his only girl. It just about killed him when I got married.

^ I have 4 very protective brothers too. When I started dating, they would give guys the third degree. It was very annoying.

I can see Watson being pretty protective of Kristy. This might create some problems for her but I think it would show just how much he really feels like he is her dad. She might resent this, though. I can almost see him being more protective of Kristy than the others but I think he'd be pretty protective of Karen and Emily, too.

I guess - once again! - I am the opposite of most of the board. lol. My parents were really laid back when I was growing up and while I do have an older brother, he stayed in ND when we moved to AZ when I was 10 so he wasn't around when I started dating! So that wasn't a problem at all. Back on topic, this is actually one book where I like the babysitting and the activity they put together for the kids. I like the scene at the park where they're spraying the water fountain at each other, heh.

maddie you're right, that quote is really weird! I definitely agree that Stacey was just introducing herself, like "Hi I'm Stacey, you must be Jessi." Weird that Kristy would bring up Jessi being black in that context!

I also thought it was weird that the BSC was there when Emily arrived! I can't believe that Kristy thought it was okay to do that...I would have been plenty miffed if I had been Watson or Elizabeth.
And don't get me started on that black comment. No wonder Jessi was paranoid.

^ I agree, that quote was totally uncessary. What was Kristy thinking?

^ I totally didn't pick up on the quote but you're right. I just remember thinking that I could sense a little possible tension - or maybe just discomfort - with Stacey missing her replacement. Secondhandshoes, agree with thinking it was weird that the BSC was there (though I do enjoy reading about parties ;D) and also would have been irritated if I was Watson and Elizabeth. Then again, the whole adopting Emily thing seems strange to me.

I always enjoyed this book...however crazy and unrealistic it could be at times (parents letting their kids run around with 11 and 13 year olds at a carnival?)...but I thought the whole Stacey/Charlotte reunion thing was soooo sweet, it makes me tear up every time. (I'm a sucker for those two). I have to agree with all of the above on the adoption. I dont know anything really about adoption, even though my niece had to be given up for adoption, but I wasn't even eight at the time, and all I knew was that my sister wasn't able to keep her. (she's Sari's..the one I mention all the time... half-sister). The whole adoption thing was kind of sudden. My parents dropped my sister being pregnant on me and me being only 7 at the time thought that meant she was getting married (that's what happened when my brother's gf at the time got preggers). and then they told me she wasn't going to be able to keep the baby.....it was planned way ahead... I don't know...hmph, just seemed sudden.
