^ That's great ;D I read this book for the first time as an adult and am still not exactly sure how it works ;D I just reread this one and as always, felt for Stacey. It causes so much stress for me whever my mom is sick because that's not the way it's supposed to be - she's the one who takes care of me (at least that's how I feel it's supposed to be). I talked to my cousin on the phone the other night and we were discussing this topic (not the book but the fact that he felt terrible that his mom broke his arm and he's living in FL now and couldn't be here) and I thought of this book. I think Stacey especially felt, too, like she needed to care for her mom because her mom always took care of her when she was sick. This might be more of an issue for her than one of the other girls. Also, I just didn't think Stacey was all that horrible to her dad (I know some people have said they felt she was). That might just be my impression because he seems so selfish but all she did was want to leave early. I would have asked to do the same thing as a 13 year old just because I didn't like staying up late. Anyway.... I think I sympthized even more than ever with Stacey when reading this one the last time and liked the book more than usual because of that.

I agree. I felt very sorry for Stacey in this book.. but I definitely feel that she made things very awkward for herself, her Mum and her Dad, by getting a really early train in the morning. I mean was she really expecting to get a lot of hours sleep by getting up at 4:30am? Even if she had left a bit earlier... I know she was probably under pressure and wasn't thinking straight when she booked the train ticket, but when she got home she fell asleep until 3:00pm or something so she couldn't even look after her Mum... agh!

^ Stacey obviously wasn't thinking with the train. She probably would have been better off not going but I can see how she wanted to at least try to please her dad. I'm feeling really pressured for time right now (why am I on here? ;D) so maybe need to go read this one or another of my favorite BSC books.

What would have been a perfect solution was if Stacey had heard her Dad say that he was going to call a visiting nurse service and if she had left for Stoneybrook in the morning at 8 or 9. But then there would have been no conflict I guess Poor Mrs McGill... it must have been weird for her basically having sitters constantly looking after her... would this generally happen in reality?

^It would never happen in reality. If she required around the clock care, she should've paid a visit to the hospital. I still think Stacey was absolutely ridiculous in this book and acted like an 8 year old.

I think it was kind of unrealistic that all those neighboors (pretty much all who had young children) would come over and stay like overnight with her mom. Why didn't her dad tell her straight out, "I'm getting a nurse for your mother, don't trouble yourself." That's kind of important information. And how are all these people getting into the house if the mom is stuck in bed?
I think I'm thinking about this too much.

people are getting into the house cause they come in and the previous mom-sitter is there. i guess all the moms figured that they had stacey watch their kids all those times, why not watch her mom for her?

I liked this book, but good God, Stacey! Your parents are divorced - GET OVER IT!!! In every d**n book she has some kind of parent issue. Kristy, Dawn, and Stacey all have divorced parents and they all act like no one else in the world has parents who are divorced. It's not that big of a deal, it happens all the time, and get the hell over it! Are these kids clueless? Their parents are fighting all the time - they need to be apart!
My parents divorced when I was 12 and I sure didn't stress about it for 2 years like these girls.
I also thought it was dumb that Stacey had a sitter for her mom. If her mom was that sick, they would have kept her at the hospital. My mom almost died from pneumonia - she had to stay at the hospital for 3 weeks. There's no way they would have released Mrs. McGill if she was really that sick.

^ I think Stacey having parent issues is probably pretty common. I have parent issues sometimes and mine are happily married and have been for 30 years. ;D All kids are different and some are more sensitive to problems than others (meaning take things harder). As for how sick Mrs. McGill was, she probably wasn't sick enough to be in the hospital but I think she was pretty sick. Having a sitter might have been stupid but I can see why Stacey was worried. I think it was nice to see a kid caring so much about their parents instead of being too wrapped up in their own life to even notice what was going on. I like it how Stacey and her mom seem really close. My favorite part of this book is definitely the subplot, though. I laugh just thinking of it. ;D

Of course, in addition to how much simpler things would have been if Ed told Stacey he would hire a nurse (which frankly seems slightly ridiculous to me for how much nursing Maureen would need, but if he has money to throw around, okay), but if any of the other moms visiting had questioned Stacey's unnecessarily complicated arrangements. The people of Stoneybrook may be friendly, but gosh the adults are wimpy.
I can never get over how horrible and inappropriate Stacey's outfit was either.

I never understood why the adults didn't just go home when they saw the nurse!! Mrs Pike was saying that Mrs Kishi had been there since midnight for example... why didn't she go home?
