Stacey's outfit does sound cool (and I thought it did when I first read this book too lol), but it just strikes me as way too casual for a fancy business dinner that Ed told her was a big deal. Someone on one of the snark blogs said it sounded like something she'd wear to the mall, and I kind of agree. It was a great ensemble...for malling, or going to Pizza Express with the rest of the BSC lol.
And what's a bodysuit? Is that like a leotard? So she basically wore a gym outfit with a fake silk jacket?
They also first look at Bellair's for dresses and Mary Anne shows her a plaid one (that Stacey describes looking like something a grandma would wear...ouch) and Dawn shows her a flowered one (Laura Ashley, perhaps?) and Stacey rejects both, saying she wants something wild. I don't see how she couldn't have found a trendy, not frumpy-looking dress.
I just rebought this book (it was one of the ones lost in the Great BSC Book Purge last year, so I rebought it for 75 cents at a used bookstore yay!), and I'm pretty sure Ed mentioned to Stacey when she first called that he would get a visiting nurse to look after Maureen. I need to reread, but I remember Stacey ignoring his suggestion and calling him a workaholic. I kind of felt bad for Ed here; he rarely sees Stacey and when he first called her up to tell her the good news, he sounded so excited and was looking forward to spending a weekend with her. Then Stacey leaves the party early, after skipping out repeatedly to check up on her mom. She had every right to feel guilty at the end. Wasn't her mom even insisting she go to NYC and have fun?
And the subplot was pretty stupid. My parents would have never let me order junk through the mail, but that never stopped me from flipping through the catalogs to browse lol. And how do these kids know what traveling medicine shows are? I did laugh at the triplets rapping about one of the items though.
And to answer a question from wayyyyy earlier in this thread lol, this was indeed the final regular series BSC book written by Ann. I think she didn't write another until Graduation Day in the Friends Forever series.

This book really made me wonder if Mrs Pike ever really spends much time at all with those children. How on earth would she have the time to be a Nurse to Mrs McGill and drive Stacey around all over the place with everything else she'd have going on. The housework / washing alone would be more than a full time job!
I also found it a little odd Stacey just calls up these women and asks them to come and care for her mother. Like many others of you, most of the houses I've lived in, I barely knew my neighbours. Mum and Dad were friendly enough with some of them over the years but you wouldn't exactly ring them up to ask them to take care of you either.
I also actually liked the sub-plot in this book better than the main story. I can understand how Mr McGill got so annoyed at Stacey. She spent most of the dinner not even 'there' mentally, then made him leave early so she could wake him up in the middle of the night to leave again! It's not like her mother was there alone either. And seriously, who's care was she better in anyway? A 13 year old girl's or an adult? I know the duties weren't that strenous or anything but at least an adult can put her in the car and drive her to hospital or whatever if they really needed to.

One thing they didn't bother explaining was how the kids ordered all that stuff through the mail. I know they had the money, but I don't know of any mail-order things you can buy by sending cash through the mail for it. I guess they must have given the money to their parents and asked them to write checks for the stuff, but they never mentioned that. I know that Ed told Stacey "maybe I can get something set up with a visiting nurse service," but did he ever tell her that he actually DID arrange it? When Stacey got home and discovered a nurse there, she acted surprised and like she had no idea that had been arranged. It seems like if she'd known her mom would be well taken care of she might have been able to relax a little. Then again, maybe not. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

^yeah, I always wanted to send away for things (like joining the BSC fan club!) and my parents wouldn't write me checks for them. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) You can buy money orders at the post office, but that would be kind of expensive for the kids' budget--I think it's about a dollar per order (although it was probably less then), so I don't really see the kids doing it. It always seemed really weird to me that while Stacey was freaking out and disappearing during dinner, Ed didn't say THEN that the nurse was there, if he hadn't before. The whole scenario just seemed so dumb to me.

^Didn't think of the money order thing. They might have done that, too. They could have also gotten get money orders at a convenience/liquor store, too. Except Stoneybrook probably doesn't have liquor stores. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Good point about Ed not telling Stacey, "Hey, relax, there's a visiting nurse with your mom right now." There definitely seemed to be a huge lack of communication on all sides.

The "Mother's Helper" skit during the kids' traveling show is played out in full, but the one about bust development that they put on for Dawn's mom is not ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) What a shame... This part always cracks me up:

I just Googled "Bodysuit. " www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=bodysuits+for+women&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=8l4qTOPeEortnQf2sciaAQ&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCQQrQQwAA Sort of looks like a long sleeved t shirt made out of stetchy (possibly that danskin) material with attached underwear. So Stacey wore a black one of those, black leggings, and the pink jacket. Batwoman! Lol. My question is why didn't Ed call Maureen BEFORE hatching any plans of visiting nurses? If he was concerned enough to want to hire one wouldn't he care enough to make sure doing so was appropriate (more care wasn't needed)? Other thing that seems very strange is this. Stacey told her Dad about her mom on Tuesday morning. Even if (and this is highly unlikely) whatever agency he found, accepted the job without first having spoken with Maureen, wouldn't either they (agency) have done so or had requested that Ed had done so BEFORE Friday? For all they knew Maureen wouldn't have even required such care 3 days later! As so many others have said, if she really needed 24/7 care, she should have been in the hospital! Makes no sense at all. I think a much better plot would have been if Maureen had needed to stay in the hospital. (I don't wish that for her but in terms of the story). Maybe Ed, stood up, acted like a father, and came to Stoneybrook to care for Stacey. The subplot was entertaining. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

I thought it was cute how Stacey said they pretended they were 40s college students when they were eating at the old fashioned counter. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) That's the silly kind of thing I would have been pretending when I was their age (well, I wouldn't have been like "Hey guys, let's pretend...", but I would have been secretly imagining it in my head).

I thought that Stacey should've stayed at the dinner with her dad. After all, Maureen was feeling better. I did like the BSC shopping trip.

Sooooo....I really don't feel like there was a huge choice here. I mean all the decisions were made, but Stacey chose to freak and play adult. Her mom said - go to NY and her dad said - hey I'll get a nurse. She chose to ignore all of this and just try to handle it all. I normally don't like how Stacey's parents treat her, but in this one they try to do the right things. Maybe that's why she continues to try and figure it out though b/c she always has had to in the past.
I super loved the subplot. I used to order crazy stuff from catalogs when I was younger and they always turned out to be duds. I wish I had though about selling them to my neighbors!

There would have been a bigger "choice" on all three McGills' parts had Maureen needed to stay in the hospital--where it sounded like she did (if she truly did require 24/7 care). Maybe (I'd hope, if this story still took place during school) Ed would come up to Stoneybrook until Maureen was able to come home and be back on her feet. A "choice" would have needed to be made where he (and Stacey) would stay, visiting Maureen, plans for her coming back, etc. So many possibilities as opposed to what actually was.
Editing to ad, it was bad enough Stacey never asked Maureen if she'd be okay with a variety of neighbors coming to baby-sit. What was "worse" was that none of the neighbors questioned it! Surely one of them should have said, "I'd be happy to help out, but are you sure your mom is okay at home?" Or something like that. Other thing, thankfully I have never fainted nor have I known anyone who had, but if someone truly fainted at a job interview, we don't know how long Maureen "was out," but I'm guessing 9-1-1 was called, wouldn't the hospital have at least kept her overnight--for one night?!

Maybe she was generally healthy and didn't require a hospitalization. And she wasn't dehydrated. Speaking of Stacey's choice, Stacey chose to stay home the next day, she didn't have to.

^That's true, Supprazz. I guess to me "fainting" sounded so dramatic that I was perhaps more worried about Maureen than I needed to be.
