Just read this one for probably only the second time over the weekend, and I actually liked it. The TOT program was interesting and made me think about how I would have fared if I'd been involved in a similar program at that age. I definitely think my experience would have been more like Mallory's than anyone else's. I was a little surprised that Mary Anne had such good luck, given how shy she is. I have to admit...my real reason for posting a thread on this book is to mention the fact that Parker Harris is one of the kids who makes fun of Mallory. As in, the first ever Super Special boyfriend, who Dawn meets on their cruise. They HAD to have known they were using the same name twice in this case, but they never even referred to it. It MUST be something they did intentionally for readers like us to figure out.

^ I didn't notice the name thing but the books have done this before, I think, with Sabrina Bouvier. Not sure but I think I remember discussing it a long time ago. I wonder if they really do reuse the names intentionally or if they are just uncreative with names, as seems to be the case anyway - almost all dads are named John ;D

^ Yeah, there were a couple other repeat names. This was the first time I'd noticed Parker, though.

Parker being the same person is a lot more plausible than Sabrina, though. That was just really sloppy, I think.

^ If it WAS supposed to be the same Parker, it's funny that they didn't mention it. That might have made an interesting Dawn book.

^ Was the Parker in this book in the 8th grade class? Maybe he moved to be near Dawn ;D Dawn was back in CA in this book, right? Maybe MA should have called and told her Parker was there so she would have come back.

Yes, he was in the 8th grade class that Mallory taught. He was a jerk to her. Then again, I thought he came across as kind of jerky in SS #1, too, and Dawn was just blinded to that fact by her overwhelming love for him.

^ Thanks. I don't remember Price really well in SS #1 except that he and Dawn seemed to have fun at Disney. Maybe I was just blind to his personality because of my overwhelming love of Disney ;D I'll have to reread as I love that SS anyway.

I was a little surprised that Mary Anne had such good luck, given how shy she is. I was surprised by that as well. You would totally expect MA to get panicked and anxious about things like this, but it just wasn't an issue at all for her. But then, Suzanne Weyn wrote this, not AMM. And I guess MA got her share of stage fright in Mary Anne Misses Logan. First time I read this book, so I finally got to see the incident that led to Mal being labeled Spaz Girl. Ugh, I felt so bad for her - those kids were horrible, especially Parker with that Emily Dickinson comment. I loved Kristy for being all gruff and shouting at him.

Being called "Spaz Girl" by the whole school was probably embarassing, but I think the real reason she left to go to boarding school was because she wanted to be different from the rest of her siblings. It's pretty easy to blend in when you have seven siblings -especially when three of them are identical triplets.

^ Yeah, I agree. She sort of needed an excuse and got one.

Isn't this the book where Vanessa wanted to be a teacher and blackmailed her youger siblings into being her "students"?

It's interesting that such an important turning point in Mallory's ongoing storyline happened in a Kristy book. Two thirds of the book was either the English class with Mal teaching or the sitting jobs at the Pike house.
I wonder if Mallory's siblings knew she was awkward around her peers. Like, was Nicky's poem a coincidence or was he aware of something deeper? (He wanted to write a poem about soccer and didn't know what rhymed with it. Jessi suggested "mock her" and he immediately came up with "When Mallory plays soccer, the kids all mock her.")
I read the end of this when I was tired and there's a typo on page 118 that confused me way more that it should have. I stared at the sentence "I felt was so happy about the way class had gone that I hurried to English, sure that Mallory's last teaching experience would also go well." for a good minute before I realized it should either say "I felt" or "I was" but not both.

I felt bad for Mallory. The eighth grade class was horrible. I liked it when Kristy shouted at Parker. I don't understand why Mallory was made to teach an eighth grade class.
