I loved this one when I was younger and read it and re read it to death. Idk why. As a result, I remember pretty much everything from it (even the sunflower outfit!). I think I just found it scandalous for the BSC? Idk.
I didn't really like Stacey in this book back then and the same is true for now. Maybe Claud did overreact a bit (mostly by leaving early, although I can't really blame her), but I'm totally on her side here. It sucks that Stacey basically killed time with her until she could spend it with Robert. I would probably have reacted the same way.
Speaking of Robert, meh... I'm on the fence and don't think he's a particularly engaging character (not bad, just not really developed enough). Also, why does a 13 year old have a job on a ferry? And it seems like it's full-time too. There's no way that's legal.
I just don't like Ed McGill at all. I don't really like reading about workaholic, distant parents to begin with, then in this book he acts completely childish on top of it. I don't really blame Stacey for choosing to vacation where her boyfriend is working, I just so he like the way she went about it. But Ed was straight up sneaking around and he's an adult! Honestly, his "plan" (I guess to sneak around with Samantha for a week, then tell Stacey) is one is the worst ideas ever. Of course Stacey would be upset. Then he gets pissed when Stacey basically does the same thing (but not as bad) and gives her the silent treatment? Ugh. Ed is definitely one of my least favorite BSC parents (actually, probably my second least, Patrick being by far the least). Anyone else on here who just can't stand him?
The Haley and Vanessa fight was entertaining, but over the top. Weirdly, it's one of the shortest subplots, only taking up three chapters or something like that. The thing is, I just don't buy a 9 year old getting this angry about their best friend wearing the same bathing suit, especially head-in-the-clouds Vanessa. It feels very OOC for her. The fight continuing for weeks and involving pranks and stuff just feels too ridiculous to believe. Maybe I just don't understand; I've never been girly and I'd think it was funny if a friend happened to wear the exact same outfit I was.
The seafood dinner was actually really funny. Tbh, even if I wasn't in a rush, I think I'd be driven crazy by Claudia taking THIRTY-FIVE MINUTES to order her food. That's crazy! And I bet the waitress was annoyed too. But I can't really blame Claudia, and it honestly just adds to the comedy. Stacey is also a major jerk in this chapter, using her diabetes to try to rush Claudia to the restaurant and then complaining about time the whole dinner. And telling her to wear whatever because who cares what she's a wearing? Does she realize who she's talking to?
One last thing... something Stacey says to Claudia from the last chapter:
“I won’t let anything, not even a boy, ever come between us again.”
Ooooof. What was so great about Jeremy, anyway?
Overall, I still like this one. It's entertaining. It's just that several characters act like tools, but then again, it kind of adds to the entertainment. Lol.
