This was yet another book where I was annoyed with Claudia. She always got on these little self-righteous tirades. Like the vacation was all about her so Stacey had to spend every waking moment entertaining her. As someone said, Stacey only spent a few hours with Robert and spend almost every day with Claud. Plus she got the other sitters against Stacey too when they came to visit.
Claudia seems to have these little fits alot, which is probably why she's my least favorite sitter.

Eh, I think if Claud had agreed to go KNOWING Robert would be there, her fits would be uncalled for, but she really was expecting it to be her and Stacey and besides, Stacey made a big deal about wanting Claud to be there so they could hang out, then she constantly ditched her for Robert.

On the BSC's many MANY vacations, the girls rarely spent every spare second together, they were too busy finding random Loves of Their Lives. Stacey probably just assumed Claudia would meet some totally dibble dude and spend her nights with him. Isn't that how it usually works for these girls

Yeah actually. Is this the only vacation that Claudia didn't find herself a new boyfriend What were the odds?

And here we pinpoint the exact mistake Stacey made taking Claudia to Fire Island. The western side of that island is where nobody young enough to legally date Claudia would vacation! There's also the matter of Fire Island being the vacation spot of choice for gay people with scads of money, but that's neither here nor there.

I can see an (undoubtledly unintentional) foreshadowing of Robert cheating on Stacey. He was just as dishonest as she was. Turning it all around and saying that he was afraid she was going to lie to him, was a very good point though. Turning on her at the end was pointless if he wasn't going to break up with her. I understand it made everything seem like Stacey's world was falling down around in order to point out that lying is wrong, but it could've been done better.
For some reason it bugged me that Samantha was supposed to be drop dead gorgeous. Who isn't in these books? Oh wait, Mal.
I don't feel like looking for the sexuality thread, so I'll just post it here. But there is a part were Stacey and Claud make comments about how much time Mr. McGill is spending with his friend Stu Majors. Something like 'your dad must really like him' and Stacey is surprised he's spending so much time with him because he hardly ever talks about him. I kept thinking Stacey's dad had a secret life! But, no he was just lying and showing us all where Stacey gets her dishonesty from.
I would've been ticked if I was Claud to. Although with Stacey as a best friend I probably would've realized I'd be second choice pretty quickly and I wouldn't have been surprised.

^Haha I thought that Mr. Majors thing was funny too. ;D And I totally agree, Claudia had every right to be mad at Stacey, especially after she rushed her through dinner just so she could be with Robert. I wouldn;t have wanted to hang around with her after that either.
BTW, this is, I think, the only BSC book to mention Johnny Depp. That scores it a few brownie points with me. ;D

^ Haven't read this for a while but plan to soon. Agree, though, that Claud should have been mad at Stacey. She really used Claudia and I remember feeling bad for Claudia, especially during the dinner scene. I would have chosen hanging out with my friend over Robert ;D Can't stand him.... Missed the Johnny Depp reference but will look for it this time.

for some reason i felt totally annoyed during the dinner scene when claudia was being really slow. maybe because i know how it feels to be in a rush and have someone else being a slowpoke. and it's even more frustrating because claud has NO idea. oh my god, just thinking about this scene is getting my heart rate up.

^haha I know what you mean. One of my co-workers is like that. When we go out to lunch, everyone is done and she's barely half through her meal. I sit there all agitated thinking "EEEEAT!!"

^ I'm usually like that (in fact, I hate eating out with my dad because it takes him like 45 min to cut his salad!) so I'm surprised I didn't feel this way about Claud. Maybe I will when I reread. Plan to do that this weekend or soon. This isn't one of my favorites but I can't remember much about it. Just remember hating Robert and wondering why she chose him over anyone else.

Given the Fire Island location and all the references to how close they were and how much time they were spending together, I was so sure that it was a thinly veiled suggestion that Stacey's dad was gay. I was so, so confused when he was sneaking around with some woman!

^haha I know what you mean. One of my co-workers is like that. When we go out to lunch, everyone is done and she's barely half through her meal. I sit there all agitated thinking "EEEEAT!!" Hee! I eat really slowly and I'm super self-conscious about it, but I swear I can't help it! Part of it is because I'm really hypersensitive to food texture, and part of it is because my meds make me dehydrate really easily so I have to sip my beverage all the time, and part of it is probably just good old inexplicable weirdness. But being shy and a naturally slow eater, trying to be social? Bad combination.

^ I also eat slowly and can relate to the self-conciousness about it but it's my dad's dawdling and preparation that drives me crazy. He basically sits there and just stirs his salad around and around because he's not paying attention and doesn't have to do this. When I tell him to hurry up, he's perfectly capable of eating fast (gulping down the food at a gross speed, in fact ;D) Is this the book where Claud takes the really good picture and Stacey sees it and buys it for her? I always liked that part for some reason.

Something like, a woman sees Claudia's pictures of the float or whatever at a gallery and buys them for like 60 dollars but gives the money to Stacey. Then Stacey gives it Claudia. All of this, if I'm remembering correctly.
