Just reread and really didn't like Stacey in this one, but her dad was even worse. Felt for her when she found out about Samantha because that was a terrible way to find out and I thought her dad was like "I really would have rather taken this vacation with my girlfriend but I felt like I ought to spend some time with you" - like Stacey was second choice. I felt awful for Claudia and don't understand why Stacey even invited her. Just to use her as an alibi? With the dinner thing, the point to me was not whether or not Claudia ate to slow or fast but that the problem wouldn't have existed if Stacey wouldn't have been rushing through the evening and lying. Thought it was awful how she used her diabetes to hurry Claudia along. Only thing I didn't like about Claud is she drives me crazy in every "vacation" book with her floats. The costumes for that one did sound cool, though, at it serves Stacey right that she had to be the dragon instead of a princess or something. Also wish that the other girls would have been featured more in this one (Shannon, Kristy and MA). Found the Hayley/Vanessa fight kind of amusing, though. I've liked Stacey a lot more than I used to lately but she bothered me in this one. I don't like Robert, anyway, and couldn't stand him in it either. Thought he was really selfish, too. But I can see where Stacey got it from with her dad's behavior in this book.

I completely forgot that Shannon, MA and Kristy went to visit them at Fire Island. I think I'll re-read this, I do remember liking it, even if Stacey was pretty horrible.
Okay I am almost done re-reading but I just wanted to post about the Vanessa/Haley thing. its actually a subplot I like, even if it doesn't make a lot of sense. I would think little girls would think it's fun and cool to have matching swimsuits and be "twins". Jessi trying to switch with Vanessa was pretty funny and the CASH (Citizens Against Stinky Haley) actually made me lol ;D Poor Haley!

I just read this one last week for the second time. It's fairly enjoyable, although Stacey is annoying. Robert, too. (And once again, a 13 year old has a job...) It also kind of bugged me that Samantha was described as "stunningly beautiful," although it fits with Mr. McGill, I suppose. I like the idea of Claudia's sand-castle pictures. I thought it was pretty stupid that they "fell out of her pocket" at that art gallery, though. And of course the owner was sooooo amazed.

I read this for the first time tonight and totally enjoyed it. It's one I would have been all over if I had read it as a kid...Stacey in NY, summer vacation, outfits galore!
Some stuff:
--Stacey seemed really preoccupied with romance the entire book. Taking moonlit strolls with Robert, daydreaming about the sunset sail, being held in his arms, etc. Weird.
--I really liked the ways Claudia kept herself busy...making elaborate sand castles, taking artistic pictures, visiting that art gallery, making parade plans, and then making some money off her art. Good for her! I felt bad for her when the "best friend date" was ruined. I loved how Stacey was freaking out the whole time but Claudia was just happily oblivious, ordering all that food!
--I LOVED that Claudia made Stacey dress up as the dragon in the parade and Stacey felt like an idiot but did it anyway because she wanted to be included. "None of this was my fault!" Really, Stace? I also loved how quickly Kristy, MA, and Shannon went from "OMG" when the castle fell to "Well, whatever" since they were just not into it at all.
--The Vanessa/Haley subplot fight was hilarious. Favorite line: "I don't want the fleas from your leg jumping onto me!" during the three-legged race.

^ Agree on Claudia' Stacey was so mean to her. Usually, Claud's obliviousness kind of bothers me but I didn't mind it in this one because it kept her from being hurt (at least for a little while). I didn't really care for this book, probably because I didn't like Stacey at all and never like Robert. I do enjoy the setting, though, and also the subplot. Had forgotten about the fleas line - great ;D I liked how the Pikes supported Vanessa in the fight, especially the triplets. Better than the usual inter-family fighting.

Oh yeah Claud chowing down at dinner and slooooowly looking over and pondering the menu was hilarious, even though it would've driven me crazy whether I was in a hurry or not.

^ I always thought that Claudia probably wasn't getting read for dinner or eating unusually slowly. Since it was being told from Stacey's point of view, and she was in a hurry, we were probably meant to feel like she probably did. Maybe I'm putting too much literary thought into the brains of the ghostwriters on this occasion.

^ Totally agree. That's what I thought, too. It was still funny to read, though, because it served Stacey right ;D Anyone else think Robert was pretty selfish in this one too?

What did Robert do? He was the one who would tell Stace to hang out with Claud, but she would still just ditch Claudia. Well I guess he asked her to go on that sail thing, but a) that was a rare opportunity and b) the way Stacey acted throughout the whole book, he probably expected it'd be no prob for her to bail on Claudia because she didn't have a problem with it ever before.

I liked how Robert was all to Stacey, I don't know how our relationship will work if you can't be truthful. Hello, Andi affair.

^ ;D That's kind of what I was thinking is that you usually hated Robert too. I can't remember what comments he made that made me consider him selfish but I know there was something. I guess I'll have to reread when I'm ready for some good "Robert hatred" ;D

Just skimmed to try and figure out what made me consider Robert selfish in this one and you're right, sotypical. Except for a few comments, I couldn't find anything. Must have just wanted to try to find another reason to hate Robert ;D

I didn't think Robert was selfish in this one either. Except for the sunset cruise, Robert was telling Stacey that she should spend time with Claudia.
