Had to dig this thread out from page 13 just to say that I read this book for the first time and hate girls who act like Stacey. Maybe it just brought up some bad high school memories where one of my best friends dumped me to hang out with her boyfriend 24/7. Stacey was obsessed with Robert. She didn't just hang out with him a little at night. She ran to the docks to meet him almost every time the ferry came in. I think when Robert yelled at Stacey at the end it wasn't just about the lying, he was feeling smothered by her.
Stacey's dad was weird. Really mature to give your kid the silent treatment. I wonder what would have happened if Stacey really had picked Hawaii or Paris for vacation. Would Samatha have gone too?
I actually really liked Claudia in this one. She was pretty much on vacation by herself and for the most part had a good time.

^Yeah, I agree, it was nice that she found stuff to do that she enjoyed.
I forgot that part about Stacey's dad. I would feel very weird if one of my parents was giving me the silent treatment...

^ I forgot about that too with Ed. Of course, it doesn't surprise me since maturity doesn't seem to be his strong point. Another reason I can see for the divorce....

I just read this for the first time a few weeks ago, and I really liked it. So realistic. Maybe for girls a bit older though, say 15-17? I really felt for Claud, but I could see me maybe doing something similar to Stacey when I was younger, not the lying maybe, but the ditching

I enjoyed this book so much when I was reading it for years, but probably because of the way it was written and everything. Even though I think Stacey was manipulative and all that, I do think Claudia was overreacting and Stacey's dad was being really really immature at the same time.

I loved this one and i'm not sure why! I always loved Stacey and Claudia together even if they were fighting. I definitely could see girls this young ditching friends for boys. I did it earlier in life and cringe at myself, but I guess back then I thought my bf defined me. Thank god I grew out of that!
I loved the description of fire island and find myself needing a vacation like that.
I really like Robert and I hate that. I know what he becomes but early on I like his and Stacey's relationship. I think that is a problem I have with all the books is that I know the outcome later and can't separate.
I loved how Pow carried that message to haley! So cute!

Isn't Fire Island a popular island for gay people? Wish Ann included that! I also agree the descriptions were very nice, and I especially liked hearing about the art gallery and the parade, even though we all know how that turned out. Why was Stacey complaining about being the dragon? That was the BEST one! I love dragons!
I know I'm contradicting myself from my last post, but Stacey could have been more unselfish towards Claudia too though she also had to understand that this is time with them away from the city. I guess she was tired of being part of Stacey's lies and manipulation....I have friends who have lied and said they were out with me when they weren't when I was a little older than Claudia and Stacey and recently, someone pulled that too though she's in her 30's and just went out of town, and I didn't like her bringing my name into it. But I also can't believe Claudia told Stacey's mom what happened, I would not like my friends going to my mom like that over anything.

^ Yes, Fire Island is popular with the gay community. The Rosso family also goes there for their vacation in "Eleven Kids, One Summer."

^That's where re-reads and magically hoping for a different/better ending comes into play. ;D Fanfic, too. A round robin might be fun do try on here. We could pick a book and make our own adventure from whatever part we want.

I hated Mr. McGill in this book. It seemed like being with Samantha awas more important and that Stacey was his second choice and that he was spending time with her because he was obligated. I liked that Claudia earned money for her sandcastles. I found it ironic when Stacey said about not letting a boy come between them again, considering that she and Cludia fought over a boy in Friends Forever.

Yeah, Mr. McGill did act like like he was using his "head down unda" more than his "head on top" if you get my drift. I am not surprised....

It's books like this that make me wonder why I like Stacey. She's a jerk in a lot of her books!

Claudia could probably make more money selling her art (like the way she did in this book) over babysitting!

It's books like this that make me wonder why I like Stacey. She's a jerk in a lot of her books! this is true, but early stacey (especially in #3) is so nice. it's too bad they changed her so much.
