This is one of my favourite books around this time of the series. But, actually, I like several of the books in the #70s and #80s. It combines a lot of great elements: vacation, sitter fights, kid fights, summer, parade, Fire Island! The cover looks so dreamy. I love the sunset. And Stacey and Robert look like they're in college, not 13...
This time around, I actually looked up the place they were staying in (like Patchouge) and there really is a Davis Park on Fire Island AND there really is a Casino Bar/Restaurant! I thought that was pretty cool! I had heard of it being a popular gay destination, but reading this board just confirmed it. I just laughed at myself because I just pictured Ann in a gay pride float surrounding by a bunch of flamboyant, muscular dancers in speedos or something!
I loved reading about Fire Island. I might even like it a bit more than Sea City, just because there seems to be something more magical about Fire Island. I liked the parts dealing with the storm and also the scene where Stacey and Claudia go out for dinner (and Stacey rushes Claud). The scenes with the food make me hungry.
I liked how we saw a bit of an entrepreneurial spirit with Claud selling her photography. In fact, this book happens to be published around the same time as Claudia and the Clue in the Photograph.
I also liked that Kristy, Mary Anne and Shannon came to the island. It could have been cute to see a sub-plot chapter about their arrival to Fire Island. They could have made something cute and fun out of that.

Funny, I think Sea City is the more "magical" place seeing as how it's not real like Fire Island

Sea City, to me, seems really commercial (like Jersey Shore) and less magical like Fire Island (where you have to cross in a ferry!)

I read Stacey's Lie and that Claudia mystery over and over again in summer of 94', but didn't make the connection that Claudia sold her photographs and then happened to take the class, as if it's a continuation of her skill & talent. There should have been a part where she mentioned her Fire Island experience and her parents being so proud of her, though I know they were since they built her a darkroom. I wish she continued with the photography in the series. Can you imagine a grown up Claudia being self employed as a photographer and makeup artists while painting on the side and selling those?

^ They made sure that it was etched in our brains that Claud was good at *anything* remotely to do with art. So I agree with you - I can see her being talented at many forms of art and therefore using all of those skills for employment. Maybe she even became a graphic designer, thanks to help from Janine on how to master computer programs!?

I thought of her getting into graphic design too....didn't she want to design Rock's album cover? I imagined her having a business where she does makeup art, photography and designs cakes, and she would be hired for weddings!

I just think graphic design is a really *current* profession that can be sustained with creative/art skills. That's not to say that there aren't any others, there are plenty. My old hairstylist was a graphic designer before he did hair and he was REALLY good. I guess because hairstyling involves lines, precision, and other skills also found in graphic design. I could also see Claudia good at hair design. I think some artistic talent bleeds into having many skills.

Yeah, hair and makeup, I agree. I really think she needs a self-esteem boost and she's not getting that at home though her social life seems to make up for it.
Graphic design is huge for sure, but very competitive and they don't always pay well though it depends on the job, so if she did it, I think she would do it for a company and independently too

^That was all kinds of awesome. I could totally see Stacey singing that about Toby, minus the meeting at the mall part. I wish this book had taken place before SS#10 and that Robert didn't exist. I think it would have been interesting to see her choose Sea City to try and reconnect with Toby, only to find out that he didn't want that. (ETA that the sandcastles song is now stuck in my head and probably will be for the rest of the day....)

Omg wanderingfrog - we must be on the same page because I *just* pulled this book out for another summer re-read! I'll be back soon with more comments about it
