I LOVE this book. Every summer I give it a re-read. It might be one of my favourite BSC summer books. Fire Island seems like a more beautiful, romantic and magical place to visit over Sea City (although I agree that they're both good). I'm actually moving to a place that's only accessible by ferry so this makes me love the book even more!
Comments:
~ I liked Stacey's sunflower print outfit that she bought on her first day back to NYC.
~ I loved the scene which describes Stacey and Ed walking through the city during twilight and how there's a "temporary quietness" and the "sharp edges of the buildings look a little softer". I also love this time of day.
~ When Ed says, "I'm just an old dad and I don't want to lose my girl to some guy named Robert" makes me laugh (because my name is also Robert).
~ Knowing now, as an adult, that Fire Island is a popular gay vacation spot - seriously, just Google image search Fire Island haha - makes me laugh because it gives a whole new meaning to why Stacey wanted to go there. Why!? Because she wanted to meet her future BFFs, of course! And I wonder what Robert was doing all the time working on that boat (just teasing!)
~ There's something magical and 'other-wordly' about being cut off from either the mainland or 'society'.
~ Poor Stacey. No cocktail sauce for her. That's the best part! It makes me wonder why she'd even bother ordering shrimp on ice at a fancy restaurant that probably has other more exciting options.

^ That sunflower outfit alone makes this book scream middle school to me. Sunflowers were at their peak in popularity when I was in 7th and 8th grade.

According to her biography, Fire Island is where Ann and her friends vacation.

I loved all those descriptions too and cracked up at the same parts like worrying about losing her to Robert, though I took it literal for years LOL And how was this girl allowed to eat at a casino? That nuts don't fly at Rama

According to her biography, Fire Island is where Ann and her friends vacation. That explains everything!

I just read this one for the first time, and it's so surprising (and refreshing!) that they did not squeeze a single baby-sitting subplot into Stacey and Claudia's time on Fire Island! I was fully expecting at least one throwaway line like "Some small children stopped to watch Claudia building her sandcastles, and she spent some time giving them pointers", but there was nothing! What a nice change of pace! And Kristy, Mary Anne and Shannon were acting like normal 13-year-olds when they weren't excited about being in the parade, which seems really OOC because in any other book they would have been all psyched.

^ I never though about it until you mentioned it, but yeah...there wasn't much in the way of baby-sitting in this book, was there? That's probably why it's always felt a little different to me.

^ i think that goes along with what virgo said upthread, about being completely cut off from the outside world on fire island. i'm not crazy about this book (mostly stacey) but i did like that it strayed from the usual goings on.

I thought it was funny that mary anne didn't want to be a princess, and I thought stacey's dragon outfit sounded like the only good one....claudia's ideas are just as good as kristy's sometimes, she's the one who came up with the bsc logo, the all the children band, the personals column, art classes and so on

^ if i had a choice between being a dragon or princess, i would have chosen a dragon for sure! of course stacey would be all embarrassed about it, but wouldn't the dragon be the biggest hit with the kids? and it makes a better vacation story for sure. claudia's ideas also saved everyone on the island -- she is MUCH smarter than she gets credit for.

Princess all the way for me, but the whole parade sounded like a big nuisance. I would have bailed and let Kristy explode.

^One of the three groups of kids at a preschool I once taught at was named the "Blue Dragons." So much better than the other two choices Redbirds and Calico Cats. Didn't the kids' make a dragon with Claudia in one of the book where Becca is pining over Jessi being in NY?
Claudia also thought of asking Mimi to write down her thoughts (in the hospital) and making the mini collage/memorial which I always wish we could have seen a picture of. Claudia and Mal would have made a great "special events" team for the BSC...except for Baby Parade floats, of course!

What a nice change of pace! I like to pretend there were small children huddled behind Claudia, all sad and confused because she wasn't paying attention to them. Claudia was really in the zone in this one. I liked to see her so independent and in control of her happiness.
