I liked the interaction between Claudia and Shea. I liked reading Claudia's journal entries in her secret journal.

I wish Claudia had continued working with Shea after this book. I thought the two of them worked well together and seemed to be a good match in terms of encouraging one another. I also thought it was super sweet how the Charges took the Sitters for ice cream. As for Claudia, I, also think she was lazy and probably (most of the time) really did not care about school. I still don't get why, if her parents really worked with her on her homework at least twice a week (Mom, Dad, Janine, and when Mimi was alive, Mimi all took a night), they never seemed to truly "know" how deep Claudia was and close to failing. I wonder if that was partly done because had Claudia ever succeeded consistently, the "time warp" wouldn't have been as believable. The Stacey parts were annoying. After a couple sessions one or both of them could have been honest enough to say it wasn't working. But then they were only 13...

I loved that the charges put together that surprise for them. It was so cute and nice to see the kids want to do something special for the BSC. I liked how Mr and Mrs Barrett helped too!
I loved the outfits they described in going to the surprise. They sounded terrible!
I didn't really like main plot here. I do believe that some kids just aren't made for school. I did like the Claudia/Shea relationship. I still hate reading the journals and just Claudia's writing in general b/c it just is terrible.

Mr. Barrett should have helped (been seen more). He was actually the "loosest" of all ex-husband strings storywise. He supposedly lived in Stoneybrook, had at least visitation rights that he exercised but yet other than #5 was never "seen." There was his horrible behavior (neglect) in SS#10 when (I don't think) he replied to Buddy's postcards but otherwise he was an anomoly. It would have been interesting to read about the Barrett kids visiting their dad.

Mr. Barrett had moved out of town at some point. I wish we had seen more divorced kids with both parents around. It would have been interesting to see the club sit for the same kids with two different sets of rules. Karen and Andrew don't really count.

^Where did he move? All I remember is Suzi saying her dad "lived in his 'partment." (#5). Mr. Kuhn could have also been a candidate if he had not moved to TX or even the DeWitts.

Wow, I totally do not remember that at all. Do you recall when he moved, Anzuhana?

No, I don't and it doesn't mention when he moved in the complete guide.

I don't know when he moved, but it was mentioned in Here Come the Bridesmaids that he had. Suzy had a chapter and talked about missing him.

Thanks, Sparklymouse. All I remember about Suzi in that book was her plan for Santa.

I think this is one of the first times I read this whole book pronouncing Shea's name "Shay" instead of "She-ah". This is also random but I thought how annoying it would have had to be to cross out the misspelled "freind" on the covers of all the books, once they started listing them on the insides. They could have picked another name. Claudia and Shea are friends, but Claudia and Shea both have many friends. Shea and Claud have known each other way before this book and it's not as if Claud was his only tutor from the BSC.
I couldn't really empathize with this book growing up because I was a good student. But it must be frustrating. I thought it was interesting how Claud and Shea's learning styles were opposites but complemented each other. Although I kept wondering what they meant by both Shea and Claud being "brighter than the average kid". Really? I wonder how that's determined.
