^ I never gave this any thought but it is really confusing. I guess that's why I didn't think about it ;D I'm a paper waster, anyway, so can't relate (have to get a fresh sheet if I make a wrong mark on one ;D)

I'm pretty sure the record book is a binder with loose-leaf pages; I remember Mary Anne saying she needs treasury money to purchase more filler paper for it in one book.

In Stacey's Lie, MA needs money for a new spiral notebook and new loose-leaf paper for the Notebook and Record Book. So I'm assuming the spiral is the Notebook and the loose-leaf is the Record Book. It doesn't really make much sense, though, unless each page is a different date and she just writes that at the top? Or makes calendars on the pages? I don't know...

it was not cheaper to buy a calendar, and in middle school did you got any kind of diary? if yes why don't ask for an extra one and do the club notebook in it!

^ Good idea. Have SMS pay for the BSC notebook ;D That always sounds good to me to have someone else pay the bill.

I always assumed the Record Book was a looseleaf binder with a calendar in it, but other information too. Like, say, each family would have a page with basic information. Number of kids, number of pets, rate paid, phone number, etc. And the calendar would be the kind with little squares for each day, and Mary Anne could write things in each square. Which could be a lot of writing in a small space if the girls were really busy, but if it were something with a dated page for each day, it would probably waste even more paper for Dawn to be /sad about. And Mary Anne has such neat writing, I'm sure she could fit lots of things on a small calendar space. Or maybe weekly calendar pages, the kind where you fill in the dates yourself. Week of __ to __. I guess not printed on both sides.
The more I think about the record book the more I think Ann and the ghostwriters never pondered much about it except that it was actually there. In Kristy's Great Idea Claudia refers to it as an appointment book, which gets us right back to the concept of why it wouldn't have dates printed on both sides of the paper. Or maybe the appointment book part, she wrote on both sides, but in the other information parts, she used one side.
Now my brain hurts.
Dawn was certainly passionate about ecology in this one. I used to hate her, but lately I'm softening toward her. At least you could never call Dawn apathetic. True, she was pushy and over the top sometimes, but that goes with being thirteen. I still can't believe she yelled at Mary Anne for wasting paper and then decided that she and Stacey should each print out a copy of their 30 page report to add one essay at the end though.
Edit to add: And I doubt it was printed on both sides.

^ Agree about AMM not thinking much about the record book. To me, it just never was a big issue and wasn't something to put a lot of thought into. It was just "the record book". I guess they shouldn't have made such a big deal about it in this book then, though.

I can't believe Dawn and Stacey actually wrote a 30 page paper. In 8th grade!

Was it handwritten? I can't remember. If so, I hope Dawn wrote it since her handwriting seemed bigger than Stacey's. ;D

I think they used Mrs. McGill's computer. Maybe they used a big font.

I don't remember much about this book, but I do know that this was the first BSC book that I read. I was eight-years-old, and my dad found it for me at a yard sale. I probably liked it at the time, but I reread it a couple of years ago, and I don't think I was as fond of it as I was before.

I didn't mind this one, just read it for the first time recently. Yes Dawn did get over the top and annoying, but I didn't hate her. She's passionate, good for her I say. At least she got the kids involved, and learned her lesson in the end!
