Book Title: Claudia and the Sad Goodbye
Book: #26
Starts: on a Tuesday. There is no hint of when other than it’s raining and probably beginning of school year so sometime in September.
Ends: 68 Days later (Almost 2 ½ months) on a Saturday. Depending when in September the story began, it may have extended until December,
Year of 8th grade: 2
Plot: Mimi dies.
Subplot: Claudia and Mary Anne co-teach a Saturday art class in C’s basement
Day Sitting/Event
1 Tues Book starts. C and Mimi enjoy their last “special tea” together. :/
2 Wed Mimi becomes angry at Mal but then apologizes by giving her a small china bird from her collection.
2 Wed BSC meeting 1. Mrs. Addison calls wanting Claudia to teach Corrie (9) art. Dawn (only bsc member to have sat for Addisons’ before shares with Club that the Addisons’ are always trying to pawn their kids off on someone…some lesson. 2. Page 24 Mary and Claudia to co-teach an art class every Saturday in C’s basement. 3. During dinner, Mimi faints and is rushed by ambulance to the hospital.
3 Thurs Doctors have no clue what is wrong with Mimi other than possibly something being wrong with her blood.
8 Tues Mimi is given fresh blood and that revitalizes her.
9 Wed 1. Mimi given more blood2. Page 32 C and Mimi take a walk to the hospital nursery where Mimi sees an Asian baby that reminds her of C.
10 Thurs 1. Mimi comes home2. Claudia feels annoyed that she is expected to give up her afternoons (in the coming days) to Mimi-sit.
18 Fri Page 34. In frustration at Mimi’s never-ending demands, Claudia is rude to her and throws down a pile of magazines on M’s bed. *C is later is haunted by this feeling somewhat as if this caused Mimi to die.
19 Sat 1. First art class-7 students. Corrie, Myriah, Gabbie. Jamie, Marilyn, Carolyn, and Matt. 2. This class is just (page 36) a chance for the kids to “experiment with paper, paint, and water and have fun.” 3. Class runs from 11-12:304. Page 39 Jamie gives Gabbie a “J-Plus” for making a red circle. He was trying to teach Gabbie her shapes/colors, which she already knew.
26 Sat 1. 2nd art class. Papier Mache Puppet making project. 2. Page 47 Mimi faints again after coming down to the art class.
27 Sun Mimi (page 58) begins to give away her possessions by telling Claudia for example to move her (M’s) plants into C’s room.
28 Mon Page 59: (I could cry at Mimi’s loving words) “My Claudia, never believe what other people say. About you. Never unless you believe it, too. I love you.”
29 Tues 1. Mimi is scheduled to come home the next day. 2. On page 61 she calls Claudia at home that night and they have their final conversation.
30 Wed 1. 26 days after Mimi’s first hospital visit and the day she was supposed to return home, she has died in the middle of the night. P 63. 2. Page 69 Claudia takes down a painting ( C made) of Mimi off her bedroom wall and banishes it to the attic. 3. Page 70 BSC hold a meeting where no one calls, Janine attends, and the Club Members sit around quietly. 4. Page 71 C reflects on all the times she felt annoyed by taking care of Mimi and the afternoon she ( C ) threw the papers at Mimi. C feels Mimi’s death is her fault because of how she ( C ) treated Mimi.
32 Fri Pages 77-78 BSC has pizza dinner at MA’s house and share “Mimi stories.” (I think the scenes are one of (if not the) most poignant and touching ever written in series. Kristy remembers on Claudia’s 8th birthday, the Kishis’, Kristy and MA end up at a sleazy pizza parlor after the Japanese restaurant they planned to dine at was closed. Mimi makes the comment that the slice of pizza “Was the best Japanese food she ever ate.”
33 Sat Mimi’s funeral. Stacey and Mrs. McGill attend.
35 M C returns to school.
40 Sat Art class 3. Corrie to give the Nancy Drew puppet she is making to her mom as a gift.
44 Wed Pages 109-110. (Why despite her bossiness at times, I am a big fan of Krisy’s). Corrie has come up again and how it seems like Claudia is putting all her energy/heart into being a friend to Corrie to help her fill the void she feels with Mimi’s death. Kristy quietly goes on to beg (order in the most genuine and selfless way) Claudia not to “drop Corrie once she begins to feel better.” Kristy shares that when she (and her family) was abandoned by her Dad, she broke, Kristy didn’t want Corrie to be any more so by another person she has come to attach too in Claudia. On page 110 Claudia reflects “Kristy may be a loudmouth. She may be bossy sometimes. But I think she understands kids better than the rest of us do.” Well said Claudia and very true.
54 Sat 1. Over the last week plus, C’s grades/energy have dropped considerably. 2. Art class—Kid’s finish their puppets. Corrie gives Claudia her Nancy Drew puppet (meant for Mrs. Addison originally) after once again her mom has let her down. 3. Later that night while going through Mimi’s possessions, the Kishis’ realize that Mimi marked off certain items for each of them. This helps to alleviate C’s guilt that Mimi might have chosen to die because she was a “nuisance” to her family. (Top of p 126)
61 Sat 1. Children moved on to making collages/murals. Pages 131-132 reveal that the kid’s along with MA are working on something secret. C sent from room a couple times. 2. Claudia confronts Mrs. Addison when Mrs. A tells her that a sitter will be picking up Corrie (and Sean) to take them to a special ice show. 3. Mrs. Addison finally sees the light (or some of it), breaks down, eventually saying she doesn’t think the sitter will mind if she accompanies her children instead. 4. Pages 137-138. Claudia philosophical again realizes that Corrie’s life may not suddenly be perfect but it will be better and that she (Claudia) has Mimi to thank for it. Claudia due to Mimi’s unconditional love and support truly was a strong person. It is here Claudia realizes that Mimi would have never chosen to leave her.
Mon 63 Claudia unveils her 12X12 tribute collage for Mimi to the BSC and later her family. It will hang in Mimi’s (the new Guest) Room
Sat 68 1. P 144 MA bans Claudia from art class that morning. Later, the children present Claudia with their mural/collage secret gift for Mimi. This, too, will hang in the Guest Room. 2. Corrie gives Claudia a sketch she drew of her. 3. Claudia returns Mimi painting back to her bedroom.
Book Title: Jessi and the Superbrat
Book: #27
Starts: On a Friday. I am guessing this one is either an alt/ Sept or October.
Ends: 34 days later on either a Thursday or Friday.
Year of 8th grade: 2
Plot: Derek Masters is introduced.
Subplot: Jessi auditions for Swan Lake.
A few specifics:
1. Becca pesters both Jessi and later Derek himself for information on his co-star Lamont, a boy on PS 162 that she has a crush on.
2. All of Stoneybrook, even Mallory (page 43) along with the Triplets who are mean to Derek because they assume Derek has the arrogance of a “Hollywood Star,” and later Karen (start page 55) become star-struck. Karen wants Kristy to introduce her to Derek so that he can make her a star. Kristy refuses and Karen, along with Hannie and Amanda put on a play called Getting to Be Stars
3. Pages 52-53 Derek first tells Jessi about “John.” (Superbrat).
4. Claudia helps Derek to make friends by inviting 4 boys they see on the playground over to play. Once they realize Derek is a “regular person” they begin to treat him like one.
5. Jessi spends over a week (while waiting to hear if she got a role in Swan Lake). She, of course does, as a Swan Maiden, calling Modeling agents in Stamford (her dad even gives his permission as long as jobs are limited to Stamford) Discussions with Derek have led her to feel modeling or TV commercials must be easier than dancing.
6. BSC throw a going-away-surprise “breakfast party”-for Derek and all his classmates at Kristy’s house.
7. The final day of the book either a Thurs or Fri, Jessi says good-bye to Derek, tells him she got her role, and that she has decided to stick with dancing. Derek confesses that he =”John.”
Book Title: Welcome Back, Stacey!
Book: #28
Starts: On a Wednesday in New York. *My guess is yet another alt/September school year beginning
Ends: 1 ½ months later (just over 6 weeks) on the Saturday, Stacey and her mom move back to Stoneybrook.
Year of 8th grade: 2
Plot: Stacey’s parent divorce.
Subplot: Stacey moves back to Stoneybrook with her mom.
A few specifics:
1. Stacey’s parents will have joint custody of her. Stacey can choose both who to live with and how she divides her time between them. (Pages 64-65)
2. For a few days Stacey plays “matchmaker” trying to reunite her mom and dad. (Pages 80-81) Stacey gets theater tickets, sets up a carriage ride, and makes a fancy dinner for two among other schemes.
3. Stacey, her mom and Claudia house hunt (4 houses) on a Saturday, 10 days after divorce announcement. Afterwards Stacey attends a BSC sleepover at Claudia’s. Despite having a wonderful time, Stacey believes “home” to be in NY. (Page 98).
4. The next Friday, Stacey’s dad shares with her that he has signed a lease on a new apartment on East 65th Street. Hearing this, Stacey realizes the divorce is real.
5. The next morning (pages 104-105) Stacey creates a pro/con list of NY vs CT. CT wins. (Page 106)
6. Stacey and her mother move into the house behind Mallory’s (Triplets played SA’s over its former occupants in #13. The house was built in the 1880’s.
7. Page 126 Stacey tells us “the drive to Stoneybrook (from NY) takes about 2 hours.”
Book Title: Mallory and the Mystery Diary
Book: #29
Starts: Sunday (October)?
Ends: 29 days (or possibly a week longer) later on a Friday. No clue of month or even weather.
Year of 8th grade: 2
Plot: Mallory discovers a diary at the bottom of an old trunk in the McGills’ attic.
Subplot: Mallory tutors Buddy Barrett in reading.
A few specifics:
1. This is the “If only I were thirteen instead of eleven my life would be a picnic.” Book Page one. On page 47, Mal once again is complaining in her diary. For the first and only time she specifically states why she wishes she were at least 12 (better yet 13, of course). (Page 47) “Mom says that when I’m 12 I can wear any clothes I want. And she and Dad will start thinking about whether or not I can get contacts.” (Wow! I guess 12 truly is a magical transformation into an adult age at the Pikes’ )
2. On page 30 Kristy asks if Mallory has “tried dynamite” to open the trunk.
3. That Friday, Mal tells the triplets to break the locks on the trunk. Mal find Sophie Hickman’s diary from 1894. (Sophie was 12 going on 13 that year)
4. Page 73 “Kristy’s attic takes up the entire fourth floor. Room after room.” K baby-sitting for her siblings. It’s raining so they explore the attic.
5. Page 102 “Madame Kristin” arrives at Stacey’s house to lead a séance to contact the spirit of either Sophie or her father Jared. (Sophie’s mom died giving birth to S’s brother Edgar. Afterwards a painting of the mother disappears. Grandfather Hickman (Old Hickory) allows everyone to believe it was Jared, Sophie’s dad.
6. (Tues) Pages 113-114 Charlotte reads Stacey Katie and the Sad Noise and tells S that sometimes the answer to something is staring you in the face—things are not always as they appear. This in relation to the painting mystery.
7. (Wed or Thurs) Page 124 Buddy finds Grandfather Hickman’s “confession” that he hired an itinerant painter to paint over the portrait of his daughter.
8. Buddy and Mal rush over to Stacey’s to try and locate the painting. (B’s idea Mallory (amazing—I mean that AMM allowed her to have a moment of triumph) finds the “ship” painting that is truly a portrait of S’s mother.
9. Page 134 The chapter ends with a very sweet scene at the Barretts’ Buddy performs a magic trick for his mom, sisters, and Mal.
10. Either on the Friday two days later or the following Friday, Stacey reveals to the BSC that her mom got the painting back from an art restorer and it is indeed Sophie’s mother.

5. Page 96 Charlie returns home with his new car (The Junk Bucket-not yet named that)
6. Page 108 yet another MA fight with Dawn because D knew MA and her Dad were to move into the Schafer house. (That MA sure is not too shy, sweet, or perceptive here )
7. Page 117 Carolyn (creates a yellow room) to move into Guest Room and Marilyn (creates a blue room with a cat motif) into the Sewing Room.

1. Page 4 Claims that both Richard and Alma’s parents died! (So lol we have four ghostly appearances in that family in later books. (Alma, Bill (Verna Baker’s husband), Verna herself, and last but not least Jared Mullray!
2. A second BIG mistake/inconsistency is that the book claims Sunday was moving day. Which is fine, since the wedding was Saturday and MA/D spent the night in MA’s old house while Mr. And Mrs. Spier stayed at the Strathmoore Inn. A couple pages later after moving day and the fight with MA, “Dawn” the narrator says that “By Sunday” (as in the next day) MA seemed fine again (about the move).! (Not too swift Ann)!
3. The Pike Plague, when all is said and done every member of the family has been afflicted with or by something.

Kristy shares the good news that thanks to Claudia, Emily has not only conquered a lot of her fears but will be able to enter preschool in the Fall when she (Emily) will be 3. I think this is the one and only reference to Emily again. Also a super-cute Emily moment when she (Emily) answers the Brewer’s phone “Heyyo?” p 142.
*Summer before 8-3
Book Title: Mary Anne and Too Many Boys
Book: #34
Starts: On a Friday (Summer vacation start). At last we know this story takes place near the end of June.
Ends: Two weeks later on a Saturday.
Year of 8th grade: This is the one and only book between 8-2 and 8-3.
Plot: Mary Anne and Stacey accompany the Pikes to Sea City, New Jersey for the 2nd time. (1st as eternal 8th graders)
Subplot: Boy Trouble for MA, Stacey, and Vanessa make for an interesting 2 -week vacation.
A few specifics:
Day Sitting/Event
5 Tues (day 4 in Sea City) Alex and Toby are re-introduced. (Toby sure looks a lot like Logan )
8 Fri 1. Obligatory fight between MA and Stacey over who gets to go out that night. S wins. 2. Page 79 Vanessa reveals to MA her crush on Chris, (12-year-old) Ice Cream Palace Worker, I guess Logan being a busboy at the Rosebud at 13 isn’t too far-fetched.
9. Sat in CA 1. Dawn and Jeff sit for 8- month -old Gregory and his sister 3 year-old Julie. IMO Jeff should have gotten all the money for the job. Dawn wasn’t much help at all. I guess “6” years later in Book 98 (Dawn and Too Many Sitters) Jeff has reverted to having very little interest in/tolerance for sitting. 2. Alex wins MA a purple hippo.
12 Wed Page 105. Aw poor Vanessa. Chris asks Vanessa to pass a long to Mallory that he will be free to date her Saturday night.
13 Thurs 1. At last an interesting Jessi anecdote from her afternoon sitting for Becca, Squirt, and Charlotte. Squirt, “matches” Misty (Ramsey Hamster) to Frodo (Pike’s hamster) as the same animal from watching what sounded like Sesame Street and therefore decides they need to co-habit the same cage. *Can a 14 month old really “move” a hamster from cage to cage? Or lol is Squirt “older” now?2. Toby “dumps” Stacey. Pages 118-119. Toby wants to go home free to date other people. “Not be tied up with S.” S goes on to tell MA how lucky she is to have Logan, her (MA’s) one true love waiting for her back in Stoneybrook!
14 F Page 129. Mallory the Zombie! Lol! (Mal apparently sits bolt upright in bed and talks in her sleep all the time according to Vanessa).

Book Title: Mary Anne and the Great Romance
Book: #30
Starts: Weekend Evening
Ends: Saturday afternoon, a month later, at the wedding reception.
Year of 8th grade: 2
Plot: Mary Anne’s Dad marries Dawn’s mother.
Subplot: Carolyn and Marilyn Arnold go to war with one another in attempt to exert their individuality.
A few Specifics:
1. Page 37 Marilyn’s (imaginary) friend Gozzie Kunka is introduced
2. MA attempts to appease the twins with “Mary Anne’s Game of School.” P 62.
3. Page 77 Richard and Sharon become engaged.
4. Page 83 MA’s note to Kristy. (Sweet but IMO not enough, considering how MA dumps K later for Dawn. :/
8. Page 125 At last Vanessa, Haley, Charlotte, and Carolyn semi-invite (trial membership) Marilyn into their exclusive club. Page 126 Talking later that night to Stacey, MA finally gets the idea that Gozzie is imaginary.

Year of 8th grade: 2
Plot: The Schafers and Spiers adjust to their new life together.
Subplot: The Pike Plague.
Hobart family introduced as having moved into MA’s old house.
A few Specifics:
