I kept waiting for the plot to take a turn into the "Brendan is abused at home" territory. His family recently moved, he's shy (Diary 2) and doesn't seem to talk much about himself, those scratches on his face... maybe that would have been part of Diary 4.
Amalia's older sister kind of reminds me of Janine with the whole "big sister is better than me" vibe.
I definitely liked Amalia's books and her character.

^ I liked Amalia and her books as well.
I liked how Isabel tried to help Amalia move on from what happened by telling Amalia what happened to her at her birthday party. It sucked that Brendan avoided Amalia until he gave her the note because he was going away for the summer.

Amalia's diaries really are good. I like how she actually has a well-adjusted family, which is a welcome break from Maggie and Ducky (Sunny also sort of, but it's justified. I grew to like Mr. Winslow after her third book, forgot to mention that in my review. Poor guy, he's really having a difficult time). It would be repetitive if all their families were dysfunctional. Dawn's is decent as well I think, but the Vargases feel much more close-knit. Amalia *gasp* GOES TO HER PARENTS WITH HER PROBLEMS. WHAT. I like Isabel too; I like how she is born supportive of Amalia but annoys her a lot too. Very realistic.
The only criticism I have of this is that it's so focused on Maggie. She comes across as really self-centered much of the time. I don't think she and Tyler will last long if she's this annoyed by him going to New York. I like how Amalia blew up at her for staying over so often and complaining all the time. Haha. I know Maggie has problems, but she isn't the only one. I do like that Maggie is there after she gets attacked by those girls.
I'm not Latina so I don't know if this portrayal of Amalia's reaction to the racist attack is realistic, but it felt realistic to me. I liked how she said her friends can't ever truly understand what that was like. And that sometimes her peers stop making certain jokes around her. I really liked Isabel's reaction to this situation and it summed up why I like her character: she was annoying Amalia but trying to be supportive. Pretty cool.
I'm weirded out by something though. Amalia seems to have a lot of free time. How is that possible while being a band manager?
