LOL ! I totally forgot about that part! Here's one that i was raising my eyebrow at: Mary anne's idea of Jenny Prezzio. "She's never going to be what her mother expects her to be." in Mary Anne Saves the Day. I was gaping at how cruel that thought about the kid was. No, that wasn't "cruel" at all! And it was Mary Anne's thoughts; she did not voice this out loud. Jenny's mum had unrealistic expectations of her daughter and that thought Mary Anne had revealed her compassion for poor Jenny. Otherwise, Mary Anne would have been thinking more along the lines of What a disappointment Jenny must be for her mother and would have voiced something out loud that would have gotten back to Jenny. So, let's stop trashing Mary Anne here.

^ That does make sense, sadly. Just came across this though: "You know, not bothering to tell a person the real truth," Dawn went on, "is just as bad as telling lies. You've been lying to me the whole time we were friends, you know that?" "Hey, that is not true!" I cried, jumping up. "Why should I believe that, coming from a liar? I'll tell you what I do believe, though. I believe I was pretty convenient when you needed a new friend. . . . No, don't say anything, Mary Anne," she rushed on when I started to protest. "I know the rest of this story. See you later." Dawn stomped down the stairs. I jumped up and ran after her. "Watch those steps," I said sarcastically. "Hope you have a nice trip." From MA Saves the Day. A little harsh? Dawn was right. Eh, I thought Dawn was being a lot harsher/overly harsh, that a person lying about something (especially about something embarrassing or painful and/or unusual) makes that person a liar who lies and is untrustworthy about everything and you can't even respect them enough to talk to or finish talking to, it's not worth learning why they didn't tell the truth or what had really happened. Joking someone should trip down stairs is mean but kind of a reasonable match to Dawn basically saying she didn't care about her at all. It's interesting that neither Mary Anne and Dawn specifically apologize for either the lie or reaction, Dawn just assumed/realized MA was sorry and maybe she had overreacted and then got really excited about their parents' connection and getting to join the club. That Mary Anne didn't later object to or complain about the reaction and accepted her outreach I think shows she realizes she had also been at least somewhat wrong and Dawn's reaction was at least understandable. MA actually DOES confess she used Dawn to make Kristy mad but still liked her a lot and thought she was a best friend, Kristy or no Kristy and apologizes in a letter she wrote.

I think Mary Anne could be rather passive aggressive and does need to speak up more. She even admits in Mary Anne to the Rescue that she needs to speak her mind more often then keep things to herself.

Mary Anne was particularly irritating because she placed so much validation on having a boyfriend (much like Stacey.) A lot of her nastier moments are when she makes this catty comments about other girls being physically unattractive or how their being single (at 13!) reflects poorly on them.

I think Mary Anne could be rather passive aggressive and does need to speak up more. She even admits in Mary Anne to the Rescue that she needs to speak her mind more often then keep things to herself. Mary Anne to the Rescue was a turning point because it was in that book that she mostly loses her passive aggressive habits and learns to be assertive in a more mature way. When Dawn tricks her into an embarrassing position in the emergency training class, Mary Anne tells Dawn why she is upset instead of merely giving Dawn the silent treatment like she would have done in an earlier book. In later books, Mary Anne outgrows any passive-aggressive tendencies. Mary Anne was particularly irritating because she placed so much validation on having a boyfriend (much like Stacey.) A lot of her nastier moments are when she makes this catty comments about other girls being physically unattractive or how their being single (at 13!) reflects poorly on them. I don't remember Mary Anne...or Stacey...being really mean about other girls' physical appearances or about their dating status. After all, both Mary Anne and Stacey knew that they were not any more Ms. Universe than the other girls. And when it's time, Mary Anne does let go of her fading romance with Logan and although she cries lots, she does not fall to pieces like some girls in some other teen series do. So, let's stop trashing Mary Anne here...she's mostly a very sweet, caring person.

Dawn’s Wicked Stepsister. Apparently, Dawn looks fat in Mary Anne’s skirt. “Don’t think of yourself as someone who can’t get a date.” Super sweet, lol.
Mary Anne is a great gal, but she could be quite cutting.

And Dawn was able to brush of that one rare deal with Mary Anne because she knows that Mary Anne is not a mean person. The fanfictions that have Mary Anne being mean and caustic lots are very silly and foolish.

Mary Anne never called Dawn "pudgy" in book 4, at least not out loud.
