I'm re-reading this and it struck me how odd it was that Mrs. Pike called Kristy so late in the evening to baby-sit. Also, it was not stated what day of the week the book began on but Mrs. Pike said she needed a sitter for next Thursday which possibly...probably meant it was not yet that current weeks Thursday. That would also make sense (though as we know time makes little sense in Stoneybrook) because Kristy's letter to her dad was returned the Wednesday before her sitting job on Thursday. Back to this, Kristy said DM was asleep by 9pm. She then wrote her letter. I realize Dee has little free time but to "book a sitter" so in advance though pre-BSC it probably was harder to find 2 sitters so maybe she was ahead of the game.
I wish we had gotten to read about Sam baby-sitting for Andrew and Karen.
It is explicitly stated that Karen graduated from K. so she did indeed regress in KGI to being 5 and back in K.

did anyone think it was strange that mrs pike called kristy for a sitter, and then KRISTY had to find the second sitter? hell no. i understand mrs pike is busy, but give me a break.
i just reread, and i found myself really disliking claudia. normally she's one of my favorites because she's so low key and fun. falling all over a boy isn't really her style. she can try to convince herself otherwise, but she knew (as soon as frankie arrived) that janine was excited to see him. claudia even admits later that night that she knows janine liked him. i remember what it's like being 12 and being excited that a boy likes you, but going for the guy your sister likes is pretty brutal. considering that nobody in the house was thrilled with the whole situation, i'm surprised nobody stepped in and said something.

I really did not like Claudia in this book. Enough of a BSC member being completely and utterly smitten with being "chosen" by someone (be they a boy in this book or temporary "friend). I was actually surprised the Kishis allowed Claudia to go on so many "dates" with Frankie. For that matter, Frankie's parents should have said something.

I read this book, but I've already forgotten the different stories for each girl. This thread has helped a bit. I didn't buy - I borrowed it from the library. Looks like I'll be heading to Amazon.com to buy it!

I wonder if girls that are growing up now will take to the series like we did? The book really was fantastic and almost like meeting up with old friends

It was completely strange. Find your own sitter Mrs. Pike. It was also mind boggling to me that Janine would wear a T-shirt with Albert Einstein on the front and e=mc2 on the back. For some reason I forever picture her in white, fully buttoned blouses.

I enjoyed this book, although a lot of it was already spelled out for us. I was a bit surprised that Ann didn't try to add in much new material. For example, we already knew about Kristy and her dad issues, Mary Anne and her rules, and Stacey and her moving away from NYC. And although I understand it was their reality, and it had to be brought up to make the story flow, I just felt like I...read it all before, in a way. Claud's chapters were the most unique but the Janine/Claud issues and Claud being a bit selfish and ignorant was nothing really new I know a lot of us say we'd want to hear more about them OLDER, even in high-school, because there was so much possibility. Because it was just the summer before, it felt very limited. But with that being said, I still enjoyed it and appreciated the writing style.

The Janine and Claudia parts were my favorite! ^I think it’s like you said because the story seemed more unique. I still don’t get why Frankie would pursue Claudia, the younger middleschool aged sister instead of Janine, older highschool one. He came to the party as Janine’s friend and then made a complete turnaround.

Maybe he just saw Janine as a friend and wasn't interested in her in that way? Frankie seemed desperate for friends over the summer, so maybe that's why he decided to come to the party in the first place? And when he saw Claudia, he thought she was a better "candidate" of a summer friend/fling than Janine was.

maybe it was because janine was just a lot more awkward around boys than claudia was. even a couple years later when she started dating jerry she was stiff and formal

If Frankie had picked Janine instead, I wonder if he would've been so eager to dump her at the end of the summer?
My favorite part was when Janine and Claudia were both horrified by Mr. Kishi's apron and Janine actually fell in the pool. I loled.

I hope this was not the case (it sure seemed that way when Frankie quickly rid himself of Claudia at the end) but I think Frankie knew exactly what he was doing. Once he saw how stricken Claud was by him, he figured Claudia would be an easy person to hang out with until his "real" friends came back. He probably figured Janine would see through his scheme too quickly. I don't like thinking the worst of people but in this case that sadly seems true.

^ Yeah, that's the worst case scenario, I think. I always just thought he was lonely or looking for summer friends. A lot of kids do that around that age.

That’s true. I guess I didn’t like Frankie much because he split up the two sisters. I felt like he had to know that Janine liked him. Janine’s friend Marlene seemed nice enough anyway. It was funny how quickly Marlene jumped into the pool to “save” her with Janine insisting she knows how to swim.
