Of course they don't ever actually write the word that was said, but what are some books where swearing was implied? I remember when Claudia got her gigantic earring caught on something in Island Adventure. Dawn's mom said something when she was driving in the snow in Snowbound. Any other times you can think of?

Does it count that Will said "hell" in SS #2? When I was a kid I remember being shocked that the word "hell" was in a BSC book. It was when he and Claudia were at the dance talking about their dead grandparents. Will said he didn't believe in heaven or hell, but he thought his grandmother's spirit was somewhere, watching over him.

If "hell" counts as a swear word, then several characters in California Diaries used hell. Dawn's first diary had "hell" in it and I think Amalia's did, though I don't remember exactly.

Dawn's mom said something when she was driving in the snow in Snowbound. Any other times you can think of? That one was funny! If I had my book with me I would look it up. They're driving in the snow, and Dawn says something about her Mom using words Dawn had never heard her use before. Yeah, I don't think of the word hell as a swear word when they're talking about Hell the location, or when they say something like "All hell broke loose." Isn't there a book where Stacey is writing a journal entry, and she's writing the lyrics to "New York, New York - it's a hell of a town" but Claudia cuts her off at "It's a h-"?

I remember being shocked when I read the word hell in California Diaries, but I think I remember the word d**n being used once in California Diaries as well. I could be wrong though.

^Yep. Claudia is the one I can picture swearing the most. Not meanly towards people but at situations like her earring or at an art project gone wrong. I see her locked in her room with a paint brush in her hand, swearing in frustration at a half done painting.
I can also see Mary Anne swearing for completely different reasons. Would she really just smash a coffee mug without slipping in an "Eff you, Dawn!!!" too?

How about taking God's name in vain, as in "Oh, my lord"?

How about taking God's name in vain, as in "Oh, my lord"? Yeah when I was a kid, that was a BIG deal to me. I think if my mom had known that was in the books she would have disapproved. She didn't like us to say things like sucks, dang it, etc.

I never had a problem with the girls saying "Oh, my lord" and I never considered it cursing.

Hee, so that's twice for Sharon. It must be the laid-back California girl in her.
