They put in $7 per week in the treasury. That's a minimum of $28 per month.
How much did they pay Charlie? We know he's super cheap. Like $1 per meeting? That would be $3 per week, or generally $12 per month. So $28-$12=$16.
How much did they give Claudia for her phone bill? $5? $16-$5=$11.
Let's say 3 people per month need to buy something for their Kid Kits. Stacey is a cheap ass and probably gives them $2 each. That's $6. $11-$6=$5 left at the end of the month.
Those are all just the normal monthly expenses. It would take months to save up the money for enough pizza to feed everyone.

Money is right up there with "time" in the BSC world: makes no or very little sense. I think they did pay Charlie, $1 per meeting (50 cents per way) so $3 per week. In whatever book Charlie first gets "The Junk Bucket," is when Kristy mentions his "fee." Does anyone know if they paid him weekly? I remember in one Stacey book, when she would be absent on a Friday, she told Dawn, "To remember to pay Charlie because (I think) they had not yet done so that week." Maybe the owner of Pizza Express, gives the BSC a huge discount?

Hmmm, I never thought about that. They didn't seem to have pizza parties THAT often - maybe only once every few months. And they could probably get by with just two pizzas to feed all of them. Plus they could probably just chip in a dollar or two each, if the treasury didn't cover it.

And, pizzas were apparently incredibly cheap. In the first book, they are each going to put in $3 for 2 large pizzas, meaning that one large is about $6.
I guess if they were putting in their own money, they hadn't come up with the idea for using the treasury money yet. I suppose, though, that IF they had a once-a-month pizza party, they could manage it.

We know they're chipping in their own money in the very first book, because Mary Anne's father won't let her spend her money on the feet of a pauper.

This is really good! i like how you've worked out averages for everything, because it's an excellant point...how did they afford them so much?! (plus i love that part about stacey being a cheapass!!!)

Still makes no sense, I remember when the books first came out, even then with the dues they were making would not pay for a pizza party. sorry. Even I noticed as a child, when the first four books came out amazed at how they can afford pizza and stuff. how low their babysitting amounts were, which to me was awfully low. And the phone thing, there was no way they could have paid for service....

I know in KGI, Kristy tells us they used their entire months dues to pay for the newspaper article about the BSC.
Pages 152-153
THE BABY-SITTERS CLUB Need a Baby-sitter? Make one call, reach four sitters. Call KL 5-3231 Mon., Wed., Fri., 5:30-6:00
We had wanted to include more information in the ad, like the other phone numbers, but when we called the newspaper, they charged you per line to run an ad. Our little ad was already pretty expensive, and we'd had to use our entire first week's club dues to pay for it.
Dues were 50 cents per member. What a DEAL to get all that for just $2.00! Unless, of course, they kicked in more money for that week.

Do you think they paid Claudia for eating all her candy? I mean they really should have!

A little off topic - I never understood why they gave Claudia money for her phone bill. She had the line before the club started and landlines aren't pay-by-the-minute. It shouldn't have cost her family any more money to use it for BSC meetings unless they had long distance calls (like when Stacey and Dawn were away).

I never got that either! I mean they could've then paid for anyone of them to have their own phone line then!

I * think * back in the 80's, regular calls did cost more than they did today. Still, ITA, about Claudia's phone. I really never got why there was a charge for say Claudia to call back the Perkinses (right across the street). The only one who'd make sense for there to be a "charge" would be Kristy or anyone in her new neighborhood, IF the area code were different from that on Bradford Court. Oh wow, I just thought of something new. If it costs the girls money to call the clients than it must have also cost the clients to call the BSC! I wonder "how much?"

I wonder when that changed. I remember it was a flat rate when I was a kid (early 90s). I think I'll ask my mom the next time I see her.

The cheapest that I've ever seen a pizza sell for in real life is $4.50...only medium, only pepperoni or cheese, only on Tuesday afternoons until 5 p.m. Seems like that one pizza would be almost all of their pizza budget! Somehow I always thought that maybe the club had secret donations, like...oh, maybe Watson would give Kristy some extra cash to go get pizzas or something. Even when I was a kid I could tell that their dues just wouldn't cut it for all the stuff they bought!
