^ I looked at Abby's Un-Valentine and it says that it was published in January. Oh, didn't know that--still a good Feb book though!

Jessi and the Troublemaker is set in February; however, I remember in the book it's a very unusual New England February because there is little to no snow!

I'm reading Kristy's Worst Idea right now. It's September. Kristy's family's just come back from Hawaii and there is a few days left until they go back-to-school (for the 10380183th time). Kristy also has the idea to have a Fall Festival with apple picking to kick off the new school year and market the BSC.
The book was published in September 1996. (I also remember the time it came out).

^ Depends! Most of them are the same as the BSC, month and published date coincide, BUT I don't know if it's true for the early books.
Do you think that Scholastic wanted the kids to feel like the story was taking place RIGHT THEN, having the books set during the month they come out?

I'm sure they did want things to seem current. When the books came out every single month, that wasn't a lot of time to woo kids into buying them before the next one was released and the previous ones were old news.

I don't know about anyone else, but I LOVE that about the BSC. I also like that they are set in specific times/months/holidays/seasons etc because it does put me into that scenario.

I was always confused what month it was in Poor Mallory. Because there's a lot of swimming involved, it must be hot. But school is still in session. I guess it could either be September at the beginning of the year or June at the end of the year. However, I noted that kristy's mystery admirer, the book before this one, took place in Halloween...
Mostly the publication date and the setting of the books are pretty evenly matched up.

Just re-read that one and it seems like they 'back-pedaled' to the beginning of the school year; like the 'Pike Club' and how everyone bands together to help. When the BSC made prank calls to the kids that bullied Mallory, I also thought that showed them acting like normal kids as that was a common past time for tweens in the early '90s (I know my brother and I did it on occasion).
It was very nice of the BSC to give the Delaney's job to Mallory but I did snark at two things 1) Why do the M/W/F jobs ALWAYS end by 5PM just time for them to make their meetings and 2) They let an 11-year-old supervise not only their kids in a large backyard pool, but also allowed the to have unlimited friends in the pool as long as Amanda said they passed the swim test. Even a kid who can swim can get tired and drown without it being obvious (most drownings are very quiet) and given that Mallory is such a daydreamer with her head in the clouds, she probably wouldn't notice a drowning kid until it was too late (she sits outside the pool and mopes about the family situation while the kids are running around doing tricks in the water).
I baby-sat for a family with a pool when I was in high school (mid '90s) , and even though the kids were good swimmers (ages 7 and 9), the rule was absolutely no swimming unless there was an proficient swimming adult over 18 in the water with them.

And in the book before that, Mystery Admirer, they have the Halloween Hop dance so it's obviously autumn.
