Okay, I know her full name is Anastasia Elizabeth McGill but how did she get the name Stacey?

I thought it came from the "stasia" part.

Do you mean why was that particular nickname chosen? I don't think we really get an explanation. In her portrait book, Maureen first writes Anastasia in her baby book and then a few entries later is calling her Stacey.

The character was probably given the nickname Stacey before the backstory about it being a nickname for Anastasia (which doesn't come along until Kristy asks if Stacey is her real first name in #13). AMM could have written herself into the situation where it would work for Stacey to be a nickname for something and only gave her the extended first name then. There aren't too many other names Stacey could be a nickname for.

Maybe they turned it into Anastasia so that it sounded rougher when her parents yelled at her.

I always pronounce Stacey’s name anna-stay-zhuh. In Stacey Takes a Stand her dad pronounces it ah-nuh-stah-zee-uh. No wonder she hated her name. That is way too many syllables. Imagine having to learn how to say that when you’re learning how to talk.

Not an answer to anzuhana's question, I know, but other nicknames for Anastasia are: Ana, Annie, Anya, Asia, Nastas, Nastenka, Nastia, Nastya, Natasa, Stasia, Stacy, Stasi, Tacha, Tacy, Tansy, Staci, Stacie, Stacey, Taci, Tacie, Tacey, Tasha, Sasha, Asia Stacey is not a very sophisticated nickname IMO. It makes me think of Lisa's ditzy Malibu Stacy doll on The Simpsons.

It is pronounced like Stacey Takes a Stand, but in Russian culture almost no one gets called by their full name so it's not a problem when you're learning how to talk. You'd be Nastenka or Nastya or whatever to you friends, but once you were an Adult, then you could be called Anastasia Nikolaevna or whatever, but only in a formal situation.
