The story: There was this scary lady named Mrs. Slade who lived in a scary house and sacrificed animals. (She was really a retired veterinarian, but they didn’t learn that until the end.) Scary lady was tutoring Claudia for an upcoming test, but Claudia was embarrassed and kept the tutoring a secret from the BSC. Dawn became kinda obsessed with Scary Lady and started spying on her. She and Stacey followed her to the hardware store, where Stacey declared “I just love hardware stores. Next to Bloomingdale’s there’s no place I’d rather be.” Odd, and yet I wish we had seen Stacey the handi-woman in the books.
Later Dawn and Stacey were sitting for a new family that just happened to be neighbors of Scary Lady. Stacey and the oldest kid were looking through his telescope when they saw Claudia in the window of Scary Lady’s house. They called Scary Lady, told her there was a hurt dog out in the woods, and then broke into her house to “save” Claudia. Only Claudia was like “she’s my tutor, not some crazy animal killer. And you think I’m stupid.” They went out to the woods to find Mrs. Slade (no longer Scary Lady). Claudia thought Mrs. Slade couldn’t hear them calling her name but would come towards a barking dog. They all started barking, (no, really) and Mrs. Slade popped out of the woods. Brilliant, Claudia!
Claudia got an A on her test, so, um why didn’t Mrs. Slade become a permanent thing?
Interesting side stories: Scary Lady talk at a club meeting led to them talking about their scariest moments. Mallory’s: She was walking home in the woods and thought everyone was slightly ahead of her. They had really left the woods to walk by the side of the road, thus leaving her to walk the whole way home alone in the scary woods. That’s rude, girls!
Mary Anne’s: Richard took her to the circus and she held his hand. Only it wasn’t his hand, it was someone else’s. That’s it. No clown kidnapped her. No elephant stampede. Her scariest moment ever was that she accidentally grabbed another dad’s hand. Sigh. I wish they had kept going with the scary stories, but they switched the subject again after those two.
