I don't know if any of you guys used to read a series called The Boyfriend Club, but I was flicking through one of my old books in the series and there was something that amused me. It's about 4 girls in a club called the Boyfriend Club, but one of the girls, Justine gets asked if she wants to join another club called the Kestrels, who are supposed to be "a bunch of snobs." You know how the BSC (especially Kristy) often used super official language like "I motion that we move to the subject of the carnival" or whatever and the others would say "I second the motion" or "Motion granted." When the girls in the other club say that, the girl says that she "wanted to laugh. 15 girls sitting alone in a classroom and they were acting like the US Congress." ;D
It just reminded me how the BSC's super officialness could be so laughable sometimes. The language they use, the lateness issue, their OTT strictness, etc... I think potential new members would have been weirded out by them, I think Wendy was in Jessi and the Bad Babysitter.

I never read those Boyfriend Club books, although I've seen them around. Yeah, the BSC's officialness was downright disturbing at times. In a book I read recently, when Kristy answered the phone, she referred to herself as "President Thomas"... now seriously, wouldn't the parent who have called be doubled over in laughter? Also, she lectured Claudia about taking "personal calls" during meetings. Aside from the fact that it was Claudia's bloody phone, isn't that strangely anal for a 13 yr old? Also, why was everyone so terrified of Kristy's Look? What would really happen if a 13 yr old started lecturing her friends if they were a minute late?

I never understand the power of Kristy's Look. Seriously, did she just glare at you? Did she have special powers? Or were the rest of girls just a bunch of wusses?
In Dawn and the We <3 Kids Club, they sort of mock the BSC's officialness... When Dawn tells them they *have* to get their stuff in order, and the other girls relent and agree but say "but none of that super official stuff like secret handshakes". Heh.

I find the uber-officialness of the BSC to be kind of endearing. It's mostly Kristy who does it, really, and I think it's cute that she's soooo into it.

The Boyfriend Club! I loved those books. The characters could be quite snarky.
The officialness is endearing, I agree. I love when Kristy mutters she gets "no respect" after barking at them to follow orders.

I love it when Mal says, "Who does she think she is, the queen?" ;D I felt pretty sorry for Jessi, it wasn't her fault she couldn't always get to meetings on time, she had to drive all the way from Stamford, traffic can be a b***h and yet Kristy always gives her that "withering look,"... Jessi always seemed to be the one most scared by it. I wonder why?

Because Jessi's black and Kristy is secretly in the KKK. Duuuuhh.

I'm amazed at how much their clients humoured them with their super officialness and didn't laugh on the phone at some of the things they said.... well I guess they have to humour them as the BSC does take care of their kids 75% of the time .

Yeah I don't think the clients are really in any position to be mocking the BSC I love when Claudia answers the phone all "Babysitters club, your kids are our business" or whatever and Kristy is all pissed cause it doesn't sound professional enough.

Even as a kid, I never got that. You would think the other girls would be all "oh, Kristy. Whatever." It's like they are all scared of her, which is silly. She's short, and sounds like she has bad hair. Come on, what power could she wield overyou?

I kind of wish there'd been a more serious plotline about some of Kristy's bossiness. . .it kind of annoyed me in a lot of the books when they talk about what a good leader she is, because she definitely has some, er, techniques which would implode any halfway normal group of middle schoolers (I've seen adults fall apart over this stuff). It really bothered me when she would be sort of resentful of the other girls having Great Ideas and bark orders at people and stuff. (Maybe it's because I spent a lot of time as a kid thinking how much easier it would be if I could just order people around and give them the Look when I thought the situation was really obvious. Actually, I feel that way a lot of the time as an adult!)

Because Jessi's black and Kristy is secretly in the KKK. Duuuuhh. Haha. I imagined Kristy's Look to be sort of like this extreme eyebrow raise matched with this evil glare and imagining that while reading about her Look did freak me out as a kid but now when I read about her Look, I just laugh. I mean seriously, what 13 year old in real life is going to give you a Look if you do something wrong?

It also bothered me when she was resentful of the others' good ideas. It was like, every time someone came up with one, she couldn't just add "that's a great idea!" like everyone else, she always had to frown. eta: I just remembered, she does honestly love that Claudia thought up the block logo, but I can't really think of another time she openly admired someone else's idea...

^ I remember one or two other instances but can't remember what books. They always jumped out at me, though, because they were rare. This did bother me about Kristy but I think the other girls actually didn't take her as seriously as they claimed to. It was kind of one of those things "we're going to get the LOOK - uh oh ;D" more than anything. Maybe that's just the way I prefer to interpret things, though. ;D
