If there's already a thread like this, please post the link (and sorry for wasting time!).
I was just examining the two versions of Kristy's Great Idea (It's Friday night - that's kind of depressing, I think, but anyway...).
The second one (the "new version", with Kristy's denim design on the side and the side bar) is so much more realistic, IMO. In the first one, Kristy's wearing a dress, for one thing, and Mary Anne is practically blonde. I do like Stacey though.
Stacey is my main issue with the second version because I think she looks more like Dawn, with the exception of hair length. She's wearing clogs and the kind of outfit I usually picture as "California Casual". Dawn or not, it is not an outfit I associate with "New York sophistication".
There's also the fact that Mary Anne's skirt is really short. I can't believe Richard would let her leave the house like that (or, for that matter, that MA would want to). Also, she's only wearing socks but Claud is wearing stockings - it's kind of confusing, weatherwise. Kristy is perfect Kristy, IMO.
One last thing - what is with ALL the food? There's two lots of chips, a pack and a bowl - and then the bowl on the floor, which looks like popcorn to me. And then sodas. It seems a little excessive, and (except that it's unhealthy) a little We Love Kids Club for me. All that said, I still like it better than the original, because Kristy+Dress=unsolvable equation.

I always thought the fact that Kristy was wearing a dress on the cover was weird, however in the first book it mentioned that Kristy was wearing a jumper to school. I think in the beginning of the series she wasn't as hardcore on wearing jeans and t shirts all the time, or if she was it was as emphasized.

Thanks - I like your blog! A jumper is a dress?? That sure explains a lot about the books! I totally did not know that.

^I am not sure if a jumper is a dress or not, but I meant it as an example of Kristy wearing something else besides jeans and a t shirt like she was portrayed as wearing later on in the series.

Yes, a jumper is a dress. I knew what those were as a kid, but when I read about them wearing jumpsuits, I couldn't quite picture those. I thought they would look like overalls without the straps/buckles, made out of some, like, felt material, and always come in really bright colors.

A jumper is the style of dress Kristy is wearing on the original cover of the first book. My mother used to make me jumpers when I was a kid.
I was always under the impression Kristy dressed up a little in the earlier books. In one of the books, she was mentioned as wearing jeans and a turtleneck, which, as the narrator pointed out, "she has worn practically every day since the beginning of eighth grade." (paraphrased)

yes, in the US a jumper is a sleeveless dress that you would normally wear a tshirt or something underneath. I completely wore one for my 8th grade school picture..... but it wasn't quite as little kiddish as some of the ones I've seen.

^ In Australia, a jumper is a sweater.
Kristy did wear dresses and skirts in the beginning though.

wow. i must be completely clueless. i had kristy and mary anne mixed up. Honestly, I've always preferred to think that the one laying down is Kristy and the one kneeling is Mary Anne (which is the opposite of the way most people see it). I actually just think the artist wasn't caring too much about capturing them correctly. Most readers think Mary Anne is the one laying down because she has braids. This does make sense, since it's how they're described in the books... ...but I just don't see Mary Anne. The girl laying down has confident and playful body language. I absolutely cannot picture Mary Anne like that; I see Kristy. The kneeling girl looks hesitant and shy. I absolutely cannot see Kristy list that; I see Mary Anne. So even though it goes against the books, I definitely imagine that the girl in braids is Kristy and the girl in the headband is Mary Anne.

The hair is a definite confusion.

That's interesting because I read the body language completely differently. Both Claudia and Mary Anne are lying down, but Mary Anne's on her stomach, head downward and her legs are crossed, while Claudia's face up and her legs aren't crossed--she looks much more casual and comfortable. Kristy's sitting up and is facing Stacey directly. She looks confident. I also don't see their hair as confusing; Mary Anne's does look "mouse-brown" as she herself described it, and Kristy's is a bit darker.
