There really aren't very many examples of cordial, calm post-divorce co-parenting throughout all the series, now that I think about it. (Even if you set aside the familes where one parent is totally out of the picture.) Lisa and Watson are really rigid, even in emergencies, Stacey's parents pitch fights over her hospital bed, Mr. Barret practically kidnaps Buddy, Mrs. Kuhn accuses her ex of kidnapping Jake. . .stay classy, parents of Stonybrook. Sharon and Jack might be the best, relatively, since at least they seem to discuss Dawn and Jeff's moves back and forth with the kids' happiness in mind.

sharon and jack manage to stay civil by living on opposite sides of the country. but you're right, i mean sharon let dawn and jeff cut their time in stoneybrook short to do the bsc in the usa trip.

My teacher read Jacob Too Too Meets the Hooded Fang in elementary school but I never listened, partly because I didn't like the story and partly because I was a bit of an ADD kid.

I think this whole discussion (or the need for it ;D) shows how much divorce hurts kids. I just read Karen's Two Families and really felt for her and Andrew. Also noticed that Kristy never seems to helpful or sympathetic when Karen tries to go to her with problems regarding custody issues or family issues. Maybe it's just my perception but she wouldn't even listen to her in Karen's Birthday and didn't want to listen much in Two Families either. Wonder if this has something to do with Kristy wanting to keep her own role as Watson's "daughter" (subconsciously probably)

I agree. Another example is in Kristy and Mr. Mom when Karen and Andrew wanted to stay with Watson after his heart attack but it wasn't their month to stay at the big house.Ugh! I know! That bothers me so much. Lisa and Seth live across town, so switching up their custody plans because of Watson's heart attack really isn't that big of a deal. I don't know why they were so anal about it. I wonder what the McGill custody arrangement is? It never really comes up, does it? Stacey seems to spend most of her time in Stoneybrook but goes to New York whenever she wants. I think she sometimes spends Christmas at her dad's (at least she does in SM #4), but other than that, it seems like she spends most holidays in Stoneybrook. I wonder if that's their arrangement? Seems a bit weird to me, but oh well. If it works, it works.

Maybe with Kristy/Karen, Kristy didn't know how to sympathize. It probably stung a bit that Watson and Lisa would have both taken full custody of Karen and Andrew if they could and Kristy's dad was all "Smell ya later!"

I seem to get a "at least you get to see your dad at all, be grateful!" vibe from Kristy regarding this.

Stacey's custody arrangement seems to change. Sometime's basically every other weekend in NY other times it seems like she goes ages without going. I guess it depends on what the plot requires

I think Stacey's custody arrangement is pretty loose. Maybe her being older has something to do with it. Wasn't the loose nature of it mentioned in Welcome Back Stacey or at least insinuated? Or maybe in another book? As for Kristy, I thought after I posted that another reason she might not be sympathetic are the ones that dawnomite and sparklymouse mentioned. I know an early book - maybe Great Idea - basically said Kristy almost resented Karen and Andrew because Watson wanted them (something to that effect). I know it is pretty understandable but I feel for Karen with always thinking Kristy can relate. But she's a little kid and doesn't understand the different situations - to her, divorce is divorce, I think.

from the wikipedia entry: sounds creepy. I agree. I'm glad my teachers never read that book to our classes in grade school.

That book does sound...weird and kind of creepy. I am glad it was never read to me in elementary school too.
I always felt bad for Karen and Andrew especially in Karen's two families, they seemed so sad in it.

Isn't it ironic how Lisa and Watson are always described as having a "friendly" divorce but are so rigid when it comes to the custody arrangements?
