Quick question.
I was at the Goodwill a week or so ago, scouting for more books (didn't find any!) when I saw other books that were published around the same time as the Little Sister series with the same checkered book-cover pattern. The other books were also published by Scholastic.
I'm guessing that the book patterns may be used to signify that the books are for a young reading level? (RL3)

Interesting theory, but I think the majority with the checked covers WERE Ls.

Right ... but I have seen other non-LS or BSC books that had the same type of covers published by Scholastic around the same time (late 80s, early 90s).

And it's always startling when they're not LS.

Lots of early 90's books printed by scholastic with that apple logo used the same checker print from what I remember. Some for series bookks, and other times, for non series books, some of which I owned. Most of them would be about children in the same age group as Karen and her family and friends, and were reading level 2 and 3. One of the other series I recall having that print was 39 Kids on the Block, and another one called Peanut Butter and Jelly. I would say that Karen's LS series was the highest selling series with that print

Thanks! That would make sense, supprazz. What you said was exactly what I thought. The books I saw were for the same age range as LS (RL 3) and also published, by Scholastic, around the same time (late 80s/early 90s).
You'd think they could get a different pattern but whatever.
I guess kids in Grade 2 and 3 love checkered patterns... haha

I know I was one of those kids....and didn't Claudia have checkered black and white pants too? I'm sure kids also loved alphabet blocks

I like the checker pattern. Each LS books had different colors of the checker box.

lol, I just posted about one of those Little Apple books in the What Are You Reading thread! It's this one: The sight of those checkered book covers takes me back to elementary school book order forms, and the excitement that came with them.

^Me too. I still love checkered stuff, all due to those books and Stacey's checkered heart-shaped sunglasses in #35

I automatically assumed that I would like any book with a checkered cover, so I guess it helped me pick out new stuff to read.

Sometimes I found that if I liked the colour of the checkers, I was more likely to enjoy the book I was reading. Same with the cover, when it came to Little Sister.
