I'm surprised he didn't cut it short so it would be easier to deal with. Richard kinda strikes me as the type of guy who thinks girls should always have long hair. I can see him not wanting his daughter to cut her hair. I was really surprised when he was in favor of it in Mary Anne's Makeover.

he might think of girls having long hair, but not out of a principle, just habit.

Even though it was mentioned in the portrait book (which I never read until last year) I really see Mary Ann and Richard both learning from Mimi.

I was thinking today it would have been nice for mary anne to have a relationship with her grandparents in childhood so she could have a piece of her mom in that way, but I understand that too much had happened by then.

I can understand why Richard would want to pick out her clothes or have curfews if he was a strict father, but I never understood the braid thing. Why was it mandatory that she had to wear braids?

^ I never understood, why she needs braids either. Maybe, Richard likes braids in Mary Anne's hair. So, she can be daddy's little girl.

I think so that he wouldn't have to deal with tangles and stuff if the hair is in braids. It was probably the only style he knew how to do. ETA: I just realized I said the same thing a couple of years ago!

Yeah but by the age of 12 she was doing her hair on her own anyway. That makes sense when she was little. I guess maybe he thought if she wore braids she wouldn't grow up or something lol.

Probably it's one of thsoe general ideas that he had, that little girls should wear braids, and it didn't occur to him to change it.

Yeah, I never understood why Mary Anne had to wear braids. Like everybody else says, I guess Richard thought that little girls had to wear braids and by the time Mary Anne was twelve, he still thought she was a little girl. After all, Richard was pretty old-fashioned. Didn't little girls have to wear braids in the Olden Days (by the Olden Days, I mean the 1940s-1960s because that was around when Richard was growing up)?

No. Kids had to look nicer at school and dress codes were stricter, but pigtail braids were not a requirement. Maybe you are just thinking of Molly from American Girl?

I think that he just always wanted her to be presentable to showcase that he's a good father to those who doubted that he could raise a daughter by himself.

Sorry if I mentioned this before, but one of my close friends in elementary school dressed exactly like Mary Anne. Her parents put her hair in pigtail braids and she always wore dresses. However, as she got into high school, her parents were more relaxed on this.
