I really liked this one! It brought me back to my days of working in retail in HS and some of college. We had issues with shoplifting where I worked and it was really quite ridiculous how difficult it is to actually catch someone. You have to see the person take the stuff, then they basically can't leave your sight as they wander through the store and you can only approach them once they have left the store, but you aren't supposed to follow them out of the store. That policy to me was crazy! Luckily my store had a bunch of shoplifting kids that I would scare by asking if they had any questions about the items in their pockets.
Anyway, I did like this one, but one again just an ending that comes from out of nowhere. I am sure that when I was younger I had no idea about embezzlement etc.

A lot of you have mentioned Zingy's being on the cover but also...where are the "wild" clothes? I think it's hilarious that a floor-length dress with a buttoned up collar is in the window! Something I noticed in Jessi's chapter about the fire alarm going off during the birthday party, her boss leads them out through the nearest fire exit...I guess they all stepped out and fell a long way down, because Cinema World is on the fourth floor, as clearly stated in an early chapter. Still love this book, I remember being eight years old (the age at which Stacey says she would have happily spent all her time playing at Toy Town ) and reading it over and over.

In regards to the fire exit, maybe it was a back stairwell fire entrance? I'm sure the movie theater had to have one of those to be up to safety codes.

No mention of stairs, they just opened the door and were outside.

I still wish the story had focused more on the Kyle, Brenda, and Mara and that one day Mrs. Powers from the movie theater party had called the BSC. I also found it odd that not one other class-mate from SMS had much of anything (other than Alan on the bus) to do with the story. Not even a paragraph on the supposed three class meetings a day to talk about how the jobs were going never-mind running into anyone at the mall. For me the biggest, is still that neither April nor the police thought it fit to call Stacey's mom after Stacey's encounter with the thief. I will never get that at all. Overall, though I did enjoy the faster pace of this mystery and like others liked the idea of trying out jobs at the mall just not maybe after having attended school all day first! At least one day a week, afternoon classes could have been canceled--what a long day for anyone especially pre-teens.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, or if I'm getting the idea from another poster, but this book would have made a really good Super Special or Super Mystery. I would have picked it over many of the existing ones! I can just picture the illustrations in my head! Of course, each sitters' chapter would correspond with their job.

What did Jessi want to do that she didn't get? Even though the movie theatre seemed like a lot of fun, looking back, I really think she deserved a better job.

I still don't get how jessi and mal also had this short takes class. This was the same class that did the egg project an they fed didn't do that one. I really don't understand!

I don't think it was mentioned which jobs Jessi would have rather had...

I know that Mal had a Short Takes class in Don't Give Up, Mallory. So maybe the entire SMS school does short takes classes -- but some of them change depending on the grade? For example, the eggs class seems a bit too mature for 6th grade so maybe only 8th graders participated?
