I am re-reading and this is still one of my favorite mysteries. I love when Claudia calls Mary Anne on the Kishis new cordless phone. Claudia almost makes the phone sound like a walkie talkie. ITA that it was hard keeping track of all the out-of-town people. There should have been a few with the majority local. Maybe the Menderses from "Haunted House" could have come back. They were a couple books before this one, so "recent." I also didn't care for the Kyle/Megan stealing storyline. One final thing, sort of O/T, did anyone else think the cooking arrangement in the SHS gym was odd? That wasn't as bad as the fact that in order to clean anything the contestants had to use the locker room sinks; somehow that does not seem very sanitary to me at all. I'm not sure where else this contest could have taken place, maybe a home ec room with extra stoves or a cooking school could have lent some space? Somehow a cake from the SHS gym/locker room doesn't seem appealing.

Did anyone notice that the topic of this is misspelled Claudia style? I had to recheck my book to see if it was misspelled there and it wasn't. Hahaha don't know if that was done on purpose but I loled.
I love love love the cordless phone bit. It may have been my favorite part of the book. I remember how excited I was to be able to move around while I was on the phone and not stuck in my grandmothers room using her *gasp* rotary phone. It's funny now how we have all these crazy phones that can do pretty much anything and go anywhere.
I think this may be one of my favorite mysteries b/c I love baking! I liked the different friendships and them putting some new characters in play.
I was surprised that they never mentioned if they replaced the terrarium. I would have assumed Kristy would reallocate some money from the Kidz Kitchen (which sounded awful!). I for one would not have ordered a nasty bug salad - exp if I knew what it actually was b/c I hate pears!

^Yesss I hate pears too. Kidz Kitchen (such a stupid name) sounded gross. For years I thought Kyle was younger than Megan, but he's not. Blaming everything he does on his little sister? Nice. I always wondered why we got detailed descriptions of all those kids...who really cares? Funny how their names are so much more modern than Karen, Margo, etc. We get Taylor, Tyler, Morgan, and so on. Anyway, ugh, can you tell I hate the subplot...

Cordless phones were NOT new by that time. Our first was in 1991, and this book came out in 1995. Call display with the residence names were new in 1995.

Hahaha don't know if that was done on purpose but I loled. I just noticed it...recipe is one of those words that's easy to spel incorrectly, I guess! I like baking, too, but this mystery didn't really resonate with me. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it, either. I'm sure I'll read it again, but I can't see myself ever putting it on my list of BSC priorities.

^ Wasn't there something about a fudge ripple cake in this one? That sounds better to me than chocolate cherry cake.

^Oh me, too, Starrynight. I'm not a cherry person. I have always wished we had gotten to read about MA and possibly Claud, baking the cake for Richard. He might have opened up a little more about Alma.

I always pictured "Alma's Memory Cake" (nice name) as being like a black forest cake.

just started my reread, and i love how claudia has a charm for her love of reading but not one for babysitting. the fact that the babysitting was just an afterthought ("maybe i should buy a little baby rattle or something..." made me really happy :]

I think her parents should have encouraged the nancy drew books though I do think they are redundant with their plots, and along with it they could have introduced her to other mysteries and adventure books she could add on to her collection. Her mother is a librarian for crying out loud!
