I agree with everyone who liked the Uncle Joe subplot. I thought it was more interesting than the mystery. I also like the beginning when Mal is cooking dinner for everyone. I wish I had learned to cook as a kid. But my mom didn't have a job outside the house and she was the type who wouldn't have been able to sit back and just let me do it myself. She would have been right there in the kitchen telling me how to do it "right." I kind of liked that they didn't really solve the mystery, for some reason. I guess because it was more realistic to me that they wouldn't have found out the truth behind the cat and who the owner really was.

^ My mom was a stay at home mom, too, and we always cooked together. That's how I learned (though she did do a lot of telling me how to do it "right" ;D)

the craines were mentioned in Mary Anne and the Mystery in the Attic. the Craines went to the Heritage Fair. and i thought it was stupid that the guy and the cat are supposed to have been 'ghosts' but i guess at the age audience it was aimmed for, yes that idea is was very hip and trendy back in the 80s. ghost stuff was very in when i was a kid, i don't know if ghosts are cool with 8 year olds anymore... but i know a bunch of 8 yr olds who are infatuated with Ghost Pokemon in the Pokemon games...(ghost pokemon become old after a while...i should know. XD i'm a Poke-nerd) anyway, maybe the ghost love is still there with the kiddies. XD

^ It's also there with people who don't mind having "kid-like imaginations". ;D Not that I'm big into ghosts or even believe in them at all but books like this can still be fun - especially consdering that you're right - they weren't written for adults. ;D Was the guy really supposed to be a ghost in this one? I always took it that it could be viewed either way - maybe he was and maybe he wasn't. ;D Of course, that might just have been my take on it.

I just finished this one and wanted to chime in with how much I enjoyed it, too. The Craines were really sweet kids - "dost tat!" I like how they got Tinkerbell at the end, too. I'm surprised that they tackled an issue like this in a mystery instead of the main series too, but overall I liked the plot about Uncle Joe. It reminds me of my own grandfather, who had Alzheimer's when I was Mallory's age. I also have to say, this is the first book I ever read that makes me want to eat artichokes

Mmmm... artichokes. That sounds yummy. You know, I think I've read this book once and never touched it again. I don't even really remember what happens in it.

I think pretty much everyone is in agreement about the food discription at the begining, lol.

I like the song that the triplets and Nicky wrote together for Uncle Joe. I also liked the scene where Mal's brothers woke her up by dripping water on her with an eyedropper, and they all started tickling each other. I thought it was cute

It's a good read, but don't expect too much from a mystery point of view.

The Craines were really cute. And the Pikes were pretty fun.

It's too bad Jessi and Mal only got one mystery each, I enjoy both of them really...but I like Mal's a lot more than Jessi's. At least the ending to hers is actually mysterious. The Craine girls sound cute and I like reading about Uncle Joe. That story about Kennedy Graham and his cat was so sad Tinkerbell is such a fun name for a cat. And I liked when Dawn came over and played Ghostbusters with them. She had a thermometer to detect temperature drops! Since I'm such a fan of those ghost hunter shows and they talk about those all the time, it made me laugh.

I agree. I like Mal's mystery way more than Jessi's. I think most people agree that Jessi's mystery was a terrible one. I have a copy of it and I think I've only read it twice, it was so bad.
I really loved the Uncle Joe subplot here. You know, I think that this book would have held up well as a book in the regular series. After all, they did have some books in the regular series that had a mystery theme to them. This one would have fit in fine.
I also agree that it's unfortunate that Jessi and Mal only got one mystery apiece. I wonder why AMM/ghostwriters decided to do that?

Maybe they felt that Mal and Jessi were too young? Some of the mysteries got quite dangerous.
