I was looking through Jessi's Wish recently and of course Mallory and Jessi always complain that their parents treat them "like babies"... but this section is a bit OTT - "Mal and I both think our parents treat us like infants. They won't let us sit at night. They won't let us dress as wildly as we'd like to. The Pikes won't even let Mallory get a nose job." Yes it's the nose job bit I can't fathom. How nice of Jessi to imply that her best friend badly needs a nose job and oh so cruel of the Pikes to not to allow their eleven year old child to have one Next thing u know, Jessi will feel like a "baby" 'cause her parents won't give her a boob job.

If Jessi was to get plastic surgery it'd probably be lipo, seeing as her dance instructor is always on at them to be skinny That always did strike me as weird... 11 year olds can't get nose jobs anyway, aren't they far too young? Then again, this is BSC land, and I remember Cokie got one in Stacie's Emergency. I guess pre-teen plastic surgery is all the rage in Stoneybrook...

Yeah Cokie's nose job at 13 was a tad odd... maybe there was a Super Special - Cosmetic Surgery Here We Come! Obviously Mal would get her "long awaited" nose job. Nic, you're right that Jessi would probably get lipo, because puberty will happen and she'll start panicking that she'll be told by Mme Noelle that she has the wrong body for ballet I remember Claudia buying "Wrinkle Away" from Jordan Pike and "Crow's Feet Remover" from Haley Braddock in "Stacey's Choice", and Claudia being a tad dim not to realise that the lines you get on your face aren't wrinkles but laughter lines and besides you can't get wrinkles at 13 (but this is coming from the same person who thought that standing on your head would make you smarter... yes another intellectual idea from Claud ), so this paranoia will lead to some botox for Claudia. Possible hair transplant for Stacey as she permed her hair and dyed it about 10 million times in the series. Not sure about Mary Anne, but she is one for risks (her haircut in "Mary Anne's Makeover"), so she'd probably surprise us with something. They often go on about Kristy's flat chest so maybe she'll decide to get hers enhanced, although maybe the other members will secretly pay the plastic surgeons from the treasury to take out Kristy's voice box on the side so she'll shut up once in a while (and if they have enough money left to do the same with Karen ;D) and some botox thrown in as well so she can't glare at anyone who's late for a meeting for a while ;D Dawn? I don't know, Dawn would probably have another nose implanted on her face as she's such an "individual."

That line always makes me laugh. I think it's simply showing how melodramatic 11 year old girls can be.

So Mallory had a big beak nose? I never really thought about it. Maybe she wore her Sally Jessi Raphael glasses to try to hide it.

Mallory's nose must've been one hideous sight if Jessi was so outraged that the Pikes wouldn't allow her to get a nose job at eleven yrs old!
Strange that prepubescent plastic surgery is somewhat acceptable in Stoneybrook, a town where girls have to beg to be allowed pierced ears.

;D
They're just fixing up natural body parts, ya know. But piercing your body with metal is obscene and much, much too sparkly.

This interested me about Cokie; she's already trying to improve her looks drastically at such a tender age. I don't think they mention the nose job in any other books. I knew a girl in school who got one the summer before ninth grade.

Yeah, I've never understood the ear-piercing phobia in Stoneybrook. I know that there are people in real life whose parents won't let them get their ears pierced, but I've never ever met one of these people.

Hee hee. Yeah, I've never understood the ear-piercing phobia in Stoneybrook. I know that there are people in real life whose parents won't let them get their ears pierced, but I've never ever met one of these people. My father wouldn't let me or my sister get pierced ears till we were 18. He relented on her 15th birthday and said she could get it done as she was mature enough to make the decision - but she had changed her mind about wanting them so never did it. He hasn't relented for me (I'm still not yet 18), but that may be because I've never wanted them, so have never asked. He'd probably let me now. I think I was the only girl in my class at primary school not to have them by the time we were about 10. Now there's two girls in my form who I can think of who don't have pierced ears - me and one of my best friends. So I guess my father is in the minority on pierced ear regulations!

My mum was slightly nervous about the idea (they'd heard all kinds of horror stories) but I got mine done when I was 10 (never asked before that). My sisters got theirs done at the same time - one was eight and one was four.
But yeah, I was one of the last in my class to have pierced ears... after reading Mallory and the Trouble with Twins, I was scared to ask my mum (if Mallory's parents were against the idea, what would mine be like?!), even though the BSC obsession with earrings was what inspired me to want them!!

I'm almost 28 and the BSC has made me want to get either a second piercing in one ear or another piercing in both ears. But, that doesn't look very professional for a seceratary.

^ you sure? I used to work as a secretary (for an accounting firm, no less ) and my ears are double-pierced. I don't think it looks unprofessional at all, not like an eyebrow or tongue ring. Although I guess every office has different standards.

Gosh yes the pierced ears thing is so odd. I got my ears pierced when I was in kindergarten, then when I was 11 my mom let me get a 2nd hole in each ear. I pretty much thought I was awesome, of course, but I never thought it was odd. She wasn't enthusiastic about allowing my 3rd hole, but eventually relented.
Ohhh and whats odd about the whole BSC piercing thing is that in Welcome home, Mary Anne (FF), Sunny goes and gets her BELLY BUTTON pierced at 13 w/ no parental consent. WTF.

Wasn't that book written in like, 1998 or something? Until recently, parental consent didn't seem to be required at many places here. I got my nose pierced at 15 in 1997 (no longer have it!) without parental consent, it wasn't even a consideration. My sister got her upper-ear pierced (forget what it's called) at 14 with no parental consent. Only my youngest sister, who recently turned 18, ever needed consent for her piercings. Weird.
