^Another thought to go with the bad ears or not too brightness of the construction workers. didn't Jake fall through a literal hole in the floor that was one day going to have stairs (to the basement)? I think someone said the hole was possibly covered by something very light or maybe it was left completely open. IDK. Either way, unless Jake was absolutely buried by whatever fell on him, there's no way not one worker would have missed hearing or seeing him! Maybe that batch of workers were as inept as the Stoneybrook Police are at times? as well as inept as some of the Stoneybrook parents as the BSC are the ones to 'save the day'. I wonder how far in terms of height they had him fall so he couldn't climb out but wasn't knocked out unconscious or hurt even more.

Ahh, the popcorn picnic! I tried maple syrup on popcorn a few years back thanks to this book and it was...interesting. Not bad, actually. This is a really good one I thought. When I first starting reading it I thought Mr. Kuhn better not have taken Jake because that would be so predictable and really lazy writing. Mrs Mc Gill has always been one of my favourite parents.

I’ve got several problems with this book.
Why automatically blame the dad? I find this incessant and a plot device.
Why did Mrs Kuhn dump her daughters off to stay with randoms? You’d think she’d want them close by.
Of course a thirteen year old finds Jake and not the police. The police in Stoneybrook are really incompetent.

To answer your first question, because it happens. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parental_child_abduction When a child disappears in a situation with a divorce, the non-custodial parent is an obvious place to look.

This was a reused plot from Dawn and the Impossible Three . Buddy goes missing but his dad really did take him.
That was a big assumption by Mrs Kuhn's part on assuming her ex took Jake. I thought her divorce had been a friendly one .
And Kristy didn't need to blame herself after all Jakes mother did let him walk home by himself .

You can't see this very well, but she looks more like she's daydreaming about Bart. Shorts in the woods makes me itchy.

The early mysteries are really good so far.
I really liked Kristy in this; it's one of her better books as a character. If that makes sense. It shows her closeness with Bart really well and there's a lot of reminiscing about her, Claudia, and Mary Anne. Idk, despite the subject matter, it's a pretty comfy book in some ways. I really like the scene in chapter 2 where Kristy and Mary Anne are blowing on grass to make it whistle. Cute (btw, I've never done this).
Matt is great in this book, too. He seems like such a fun kid.
I'm not sure how I felt about the home ec subplot. It felt OOC for Mary Anne and out of place, but had its comical moments. I'd like to see it more developed, but in a different book. Just felt very trite compared to a kid missing. Also, I hated jello as a kid. Weird stuff. And I don't eat it now because it's not vegetarian. I wonder how Dawn dealt with home ec lol.
I liked how Kristy wanted to wear a dress at the awards, then changed her mind when she remembered that dressing up sucks. Lol. I've been there. Love the outfit descriptions at the end for some reason and how she says, "Sorry, I'm not great at describing clothes."
The mystery itself was alright. The actual book was good, so overall it worked.

I like that French cover where they are in the woods. It feels much more desperate and dangerous than a new construction and it makes the search area seem enormous. It's been a while since I read this one and I don't remember anything about the home ec chapters, haha.

This was a very good mystery. So realistic because people go missing all the time. I’ve been following the story of the Memphis teacher who was abducted while jogging. So awful.
