I never had home ec either. Like Stacey, I have since refused to learn to sew for "fear of pricking my fingers." A cook, I am not. Then again I'm not much of an adventurous eater either. I could have benefited from some non patronizing Dawn receipe ideas.

^ did stacey really say that? it's kind of strange, considering she pricks her fingers constantly to check her blood sugar.

^She did. I don't remember which book but Stacey said something like, "I used to be one of those kids who cried at the very thought of a flu shot. I never even learned to sew," etc. she went onto say that she still hates having to take her blood and give herself the shots but it's better than being sick all the time.

I think Stacey said all those things in The Truth About Stacey, when she was recounting the year leading up to her diagnosis.

This book was scary to me thinking about someone so young being missing. I must say that I really did like Bart and Kristy's relationship in this one. It was a nice change to see her be a bit vulnerable with him about Jake and her guilt. I liked the awards at the end! I thought it was funny 2 guys in clown outfits but it didn't necessarily fit with the story. I refused to take home ec in school. I already cooked and sewed at home so I rebelled and took shop. I find it super useful now that I bought my own home and try to mimic my HGTV fascinations

I was never made to take home ec. It wasn't even really an option. The only real thing we had to take in high school was life management skills and personal fitness. And one physical ed requirement which for me was weight lifting for one semester. And I took personal fitness online which just meant my mom had to sign off that i did things and i fax it back to them. However, she signed for me without me doing them, since i was already really active in a martial arts back then, called Capoeira.
I liked the award ceremony too, but the award for class clown was so odd in my opinion to go to Justin Forbes. I had never even remembered hearing about him much. I would have rather it had gone to either Pete or Alan, for sure, because I felt like the readers at least knew them.

This mystery is before the days when the Stoneybrook Police Department practically relies on the BSC. (I preferred it that way as opposed to the BSC members being invited into interrogation rooms). But, come on, other than sit around Mrs. Kuhn's kitchen drinking coffee, it didn't sound like they did much of anything. I know the construction site wasn't on Jake's way home, but it sounded VERY close to the SES playing field. Surely one of those Officers, should have re-traced "possible" route(s) home right off the bat. As I said up thread, I was very relieved Jake was okay and not kidnapped or badly hurt. Really, if Matt had not inisisted they look inside the scaffolding, it didn't seem like Jake would have been found until at least Monday. (He was found on Saturday).

Did Justin Forbes ever have a speaking role in any of the books, like maybe going to a dance with Claudia or Stacey? I barely remember him. Alan Gray seems like he'd be a shoo-in for class clown.

Justin like called during MA's surprise party about some pig farm or something. I think he was made out to be more of a dork than anything because I believe it was mentioned he was just mad Alan was invited and he wasn't. Or something. Other than that, I don't think we ever saw him.

^I don't think Justin was ever mentioned again either. I'm not sure if this belongs here or under the "general series discussion thread." As I re-read this time around, I'm noticing (more) that Patrick's abandonment is lumped together with all the other divorces. We never did get to read exactly what happened. I think it sounded like Patrick literally up and left one day, without turning back. No note no nothing. He may have followed up when he felt like it with a call or letter but basically he was gone. I just don't think that's quite the same as a more "typical" divorce. Maybe I'm thinking more about this after just reading this mystery. At breakfast, the morning Jake is found, Kristy asks her mom about where Patrick is causing David Michael to wonder if he (P) might ever kidnap him (DM) in order to develop a relationship.

I agree with you on that one zoar. I always felt like Patrick just peaced out. I felt like - this may sound weird - this situation was worse than the divorces of the others. I know divorce is horrible for all, but Kristy's situation just struck as different and horrible. I mean how terrible to just wake up one day to no dad!

^That's what I was trying to say Wiggirl, thanks. I felt like Ann and the Ghosties didn't want to take the time to write Patrick's story (not that he's worthy of one, but you know), so they decided, "Kristy's mom got a divorce, made it on her own, later met Watson, the end." I wish we had gotten to read what happened and that Patrick either kept in touch or he didn't. The other thing I always found odd, was when Elizabeth told Kristy that she (E) wanted to sell their home for as much as possible not only to finance 4 college educations but because half the money would go to Patrick. I believe in being honest, almost to a fault. But, if that creep truly walked out, never looked back, didn't he also forfeit his "right" to any house-money? We can assume he never sent child support and/or (did she?)? Elizabeth never tried to get any from him? So much focus was on the "Spier-Shafers," reminding us at every glance how old their house was, scatterbrained Sharon, food problems (though MA and Richard bowed to D and S), that maybe that "used up" the more detailed family explanation?

Hah! That is probably true about them using it up.
I can't remember, but I think some of this was cleared up in the FF series when she goes to see him. I just don't remember!

Zoar, there's a slightly more detailed explanation of Patrick leaving his family in Kristy's Book. It's the kind of thing I can imagine Kristy keeping to herself and not wanting to talk about, so it never seemed unusual to me that none of the other sitters could offer much insight about it and Kristy didn't want to.
